How long have your previous cats lived to?

One of my cats is about to turn 8, the vet said he is senior now which surprised me because I know cats can live to be 18+ however, I’m not sure how common this is. Just out of interest, how long have your cats lived to, and what age do you think is considered “old” for a cat?

Cats sleep almost all day?

Mine don't!

Cat 1: I had from 1 to 7, he got a kidney infection
cats 2&3: got together aged 9 and 13 and both lived to 18
cat 4: got at 13, he’d been found as a stray and was in a terrible condition, RSPCA had him for months before he was well enough to be adopted, he only lasted about 6 months but he had a lovely retirement in front of the fire.
cats 5&6: kittens to now, they are 10
and cat 7 got aged 4 months and he is now 4.

they were all rescue moggies and very loved.
twice I went thinking I’d get kittens and came away with gorgeous older cats.

Mine don't!

That’s quite odd…kittens sleep 20-22hrs a day and adult cats up to 16 (20 for senior).

Mine sleep when I sleep, and on and off while I work, then they’re awake on the evenings with us.

Our cat is 18, we had to put his brother (litter mate) to sleep at the beginning of the summer. They are/were moggies.

My previous six cats have lived to (from memory) 13ish, 14, 16, 14, 17 and 20. Current lot are two 15 year olds and two 8 year olds. All moggies.

I don't regard the 8 year olds as senior - they are very childish 😂

GentleSheep · 27/09/2026 23:32

Let's see... 6 months, 14, 16, 17, 2. All died of 'natural causes' i.e. disease or infection. All moggies.

My childhood cat lived to be 21. My two burmese cats are now 16 and 17. The 17 year old male is still quite young and healthy looking but the 16 year old female is really showing her age.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 27/09/2026 23:36

Mine is 19 and still going strong. Really soft, lovely fur, still jumping up to the garage roof…he’s more like a 10 year old.

My cat was 20 when she died. She was the longest living cat of any in my extended family.
She was a lovely girl, I do miss her.

Moggy 17.

Miss him so much

My childhood cat was 14. My next cats one died at 6 with lots of health/spinal issues. Her sister is 15 now, still plodding along, lazy indoor cat. The vet asked if her age is correct as her heart sounds young. They were 6 month old rescue cats who had been badly treated. I have a 3 year old outdoor wild cat too!

The oldest I’ve had died in their sleep at 23
Sadly lost many to accidents at all sorts of ages
Most recent losses were Finlay aged 3 due to accident
Reuben 6 due to kidney stone
Evie 16 due to leukemia

I've had several cats, over many years. The one who lasted the longest was a feral tabby we took in. He lived to age 19 (estimated, and he may have been older). All my cats were from rescue centres or were strays. We had one for 18 years (so she was probably 19)
