How long have your previous cats lived to?

One of my cats is about to turn 8, the vet said he is senior now which surprised me because I know cats can live to be 18+ however, I’m not sure how common this is. Just out of interest, how long have your cats lived to, and what age do you think is considered “old” for a cat?

My title is wrong sorry, it’s meant to say “how long have your previous cats lived for?” Not to🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Depends on breed, my moggy lived til 16, purebreds last a lot less, my Ragdoll is 14, that is geriatric for her breed.

Dont bother with senior food unless the vet recommends, my DCat lost a lot of weight when got a dog and vet recommended normal food

freeandfierce · 27/09/2026 12:10

I had a very overweight black moggy who lived to 23. The only time I ever took him to the vet he never came home. I've had another live to 21 then 18.

shellyleppard · 27/09/2026 12:11

Mine lasted till 21 and 18 years. Had them from tiny kittens. The next one lasted till he was 15.
Currently have 3 but no idea how old as they adopted us.....

freeandfierce · 27/09/2026 12:12

I consider them 'old' once you notice them sleep a lot more and naturally slow down.

Twelvetimes · 27/09/2026 12:13

My oldest was 16. Also a couple who lived to 15. Two died at 10, one of cancer and one of chronic kidney disease.

I currently have two 13 year olds. Both of them needed (completely different) complex surgery last year and both came through it absolutely fine and are back to normal. Older cats sleep a lot but they both still have a race around.

I also have an 8 year old and she zooms around like a kitten!

Like a PP, I don't buy senior food either - except sometimes by mistake!

chirrupybird · 27/09/2026 12:14

20 was our oldest and I swore I would never get another, but we recently 'inherited' one that someone didn't want. He's a worry because he goes off on long jaunts I have a tracker on him that terrifies me when I see where he is.

Littletreefrog · 27/09/2026 12:16

My first to pass away passed agter we had her 27 years but she was possibly 1 to 2 year old when we got her.

The second to pass away could have been any age really as we found him in a bag in a bin but he didn't seem old. Just went to sleep and never woke up.

Current cat is the only one we actually know the age of, she is 11 but currently undergoing test to see if she has cancer so probably not long left for her.

Agh typo!!! 17!

mondaytosunday · 27/09/2026 12:31

Oldest was 23. She’d been through Battersea Dogs home twice when I got her at about 11 and was hit by a car a few years later but lasted all that and three moves. I have moved countries a few times so have had to give cats away but all have lived well into their teens. Two were killed by cars, both before reaching ten.
I think I must have had at least nine cats in my lifetime and wouldn’t consider 8 as senior - more like 12 plus?

DurhamDime · 27/09/2026 12:37

15 and 16 for the ones I know ages of. A couple of rescues who were probably teens but we can’t be sure.

my childhood cat was 20 so 15 and 16 seemed cruel but I think that’s more normal to be honest as even before my 16 year old girl died she got very grey and scraggly. Bless her heart.

Thankful to currently have 2 under 5 so hopefully many years until we have any heartache.

Mum had a cat that lived to 20. I was 12 when we got him and 32 when he died, so he was sort of always there. Very lazy cat, loved nothing more than lying in a warm spot in the garden.

He was abandoned by his Mum and the farmer where Dad got his straw sort of pressed my Dad to take him. He started his life with us wrapped in a towel in the airing cupboard. He was so small that he could fit on the palm of your hand, ended at 20 the size of Bagpuss.

WhatMe123 · 27/09/2026 12:44

17

AnotherExpatKiwi · 27/09/2026 12:45

Current pair are 12 and 13. Both seem full of life.

Previous boys (litter mates) died at 17 and 18. One got cancer, the other had kidney issues and congestive heart failure at the end.

All were moggies.

TheGriffle · 27/09/2026 12:45

Our current old boy is 17. Previous family cat was over 15 when she had to be put down due to kidney disease but I can’t remember her exact age.

BagginBilbo · 27/09/2026 12:53

Current cat is 17 and still behaves like an overgrown kitten, racing around the house. The only obvious sign of old age is that some of his whiskers are now white.

dustabsorber · 27/09/2026 12:53

Mum had another cat that too was around 20 when he died. He used to sit by the telephone and try to whack us kids as we walked past. Maybe Mum had trained him to do that as telephone calls were so expensive in the 70s. He was got to keep the older cat company.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 27/09/2026 13:07

18 and 22, both moggies. Had both from kittens and they were house cats

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 27/09/2026 13:19

8,13,14,and 6.

MotherTuckinGenius · 27/09/2026 13:24

Moggie 12/Maine Coon 14/ Maine Coon 15. Last cat standing moggie is 18+ , on two different types of medication but still enjoying life bless him.

CherryKerry · 27/09/2026 13:29

Cat #1 - Rescue cat, had him 10 years, not sure of his actual age but think he was probably 15 or 16. He was well past his youth when we adopted him.

Cat #2 - Recue cat, Only 7, had what turned out to be a congenital kidney problem.

Cat #3 - Rescue cat, litter mate to #2. Same kidney problem but managed to medicate him to 10.

Current cats are 5 and 1, 1 pedigree 1 rescue.

Really wish to be one of those people who can say oh, we've had Felix for 20 years now one day.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/09/2026 13:32

Current cat is 13, moggy. Half moggy half oriental one lived to 13 (had heart issue I think) the other 17, half Siamese half moggy 5, developed brain encephalitis snd epilepsy, Childhood moggy 17.

goudacheese · 27/09/2026 13:38

Previous cat was 13 and died of kidney failure. Current boys are both 15, one in excellent health, the other very good but has an arthritic leg and sleeps alot.
