Anyone use covered litter trays?

The Cat Distribution System has been on overdrive and we currently have five indoor cats (all either abandoned or ex-feral). Two of them go outside during the day but the other three are firmly indoor cats (they’ve been outside and frankly think it’s overrated..).

They’ve got four cat trays in various spots around the house which all get used with no arguments but I do spend ages sweeping up cat litter and making sure there’s no poo before the dog finds it 🤢. Does anyone use covered trays and if so, any recommendations?

Most of them are too small for comfort really and cats end up sticking their heads out while pooing, the automatic ones look ridiculously small too.
I use a massive one from pets at home, no door but you can't see them once they are in and loads of room to manoeuvre.
You're supposed to use an extra litter tray inside with room to shake paws on the way out but I just fill the lot with litter and keep a mat outside.

I had one my cat refused to use it until I took the cover off 😂 she's just using the tray now 💕

My cat uses a corner version of this 😊 it stops her flinging litter everywhere 😂

We have the corner version of this too, and also a big spongy mat from Amazon that sits under it. Our cat is a proper little digger though so we are still always sweeping up!

At the moment we have MiL's cat living with us while she renovates a new home she's bought. He's a very tidy litter tray user (separate tray) with no digging, but also does not cover his toilet which is quite annoying. He's used to having 24/7 catflap access (he is now allowed out with us after a long settling in period) from pretty much as soon as he was neutered as a kitten and I wasn't sure he'd remember how to use a tray.

We have a third tray in the utility room but neither cat uses it. I bought a litter robot in the summer in preparation for MiL's cat coming, but thought the actual "toilet area" was really small and sent it back. Our boy was intrigued by it but I could just picture his bum hanging over the edge of the small space.

We have two covered trays. One is in the upstairs bathroom and one in the garden room. The cat who lives upstairs uses the bathroom one also my fat ginger if she’s been caught out. Boy cat likes to go outdoors and my old lady cat nearly 19 uses downstairs tray which also has a puppy pad underneath as she now has a tendency to wee over the side of the tray! They don’t seem to have any issues with the trays being covered.

My cat used to smear poo on the ceiling of his until I gave up and took the cover off. It also had zero effect in reducing the tracking of litter around the house, but appreciate that it might deter a dog from investigating.

@Pleasedontdothat amazon- there are loads of styles. Our cat adapted to it instantly and I do not think she is particularly smart!

Thank you - our cats range from incredibly dim to actually quite bright!

Yes, we have one, dcats have no problems using it. We also have a Canadian Cat mat which collects any stray litter.
