Anyone use covered litter trays?

The Cat Distribution System has been on overdrive and we currently have five indoor cats (all either abandoned or ex-feral). Two of them go outside during the day but the other three are firmly indoor cats (they’ve been outside and frankly think it’s overrated..).

They’ve got four cat trays in various spots around the house which all get used with no arguments but I do spend ages sweeping up cat litter and making sure there’s no poo before the dog finds it 🤢. Does anyone use covered trays and if so, any recommendations?

I had a covered tray a few years ago.

1 cat never looked at it and the other 1 used it as bed 😂

Cats on the whole do not like covered litter trays! I had one who kept peeing on the bed and i finally worked out he hated the cover. once I took it off he was fine and went back to using the tray.

The best bet is to buy the biggest litter tray you can with the highest sides - that's what I've done and it does help, apart from with the one little bugger I have who likes to stand up to pee and ends up spraying the wall!!

I always used them as my tray is in the kitchen. (Nowhere else for it to go) I just had a basic one from PAH.

Alaska used to kick litter everywhere so my Mum bought us a covered one. Alaska couldn't work out how to use the door so we just took it off and left it open and is fine using it now.

Get a covered one with a hole for their head to pop out of.

I’ve done exactly this, took the door off and they use it. Apart from anything else it must have been v dark in there with the door on!

Ours has always had a covered litter tray, it is fine but she is now 19 and senile, sometimes she goes in but forgets her bottom is outside and wees on the floor. She also sometimes thinks the dark bit under the sink in the utility room is her litter tray, it is dark and enclosed and has a similar vibe so I suspect it is her senile dementia.

Yes but I had to take the doors off. I have two of these.

I have a covered one but with no door. They pop in that one and wee in the open one for some reason.

My cat’s litter tray is in my office so I have an open tray in an enclosed cover without a door. She doesn’t seem to mind it and it looks nicer than a usual covered one.

I wouldn't use anything but a covered tray. They still manage to get litter on the floor, but there is no standing in the tray and doing their business over the side on to the floor

We have a covered one that came with the cat, it did stop quite a lot of the litter being spread everywhere. it is probably too small for him now, but he mainly goes outside now and only uses it in emergency when he's shut in at night. I keep thinking I'll take the lid off but it does look tidier with the lid on.

We use them but take the flap off the front. Litter still tracks but as pp above, they can no longer do it over the side,

I was looking at the fake plant pot ones. Are they any good? They seem small.

Mine prefer these to the fully covered ones. Keeps most of it in.

I have covered, uncovered and top entry ones and they all get used.

I bought a large rubber mat from Amazon designed to go under the tray and it does keep most of the litter on it. You just empty the mess into a rubbish bag and I machine wash it every couple of weeks.

Yeah, my cat used a covered tray as well no problem

My house cat has two covered ones , one in the house one in his catico.
Both of them are deep so hold a lot of litter but I think it's easier to keep clean with deep litter.

They both have doors on , for the first few days I just used the tray ( well I didn't use the tray , you know what I mean 😀) then put the lid on then door .
The only thing I wish I'd done is bought steel ones as his current ones are quite badly scratched now , but the are about 4 years old so it's to be expected.

Sort of, in that it is covered, just i took the flappy door off as they didn't like it. So it's covered on 3 sides as it were. They kick out a few bits getting out but it's on a tiled floor so no biggie.

We have had covered ones for about 30 years with all our cats , but always take the doors off . I don’t imagine it’s nice being stuck in a dark enclosed space , and when we did try leave them on , the cats would stick their heads out while they used them .

Yes, we got it after the dust created by the litter we use got ridiculous. Cat is perfectly ok with it. Indoor cat. 🐈‍⬛

We got an automatic cleaner - it's the bees knees!

I do - also as others have said, no door. I also have a litter mat which catches stray bits. Also i found some litters are more inclined to get tracked.
