“Orange cats are crazy”

Does anyone else find the “orange” cat being crazy thing a myth? The only ginger cat I had was scared of his own shadow, was extremely shy and timid and would hide all day. Anyone else think the orange cat thing is a myth, I’ve been told ive “obviously never owned one then” because orange cats are weird and crazy apparently 😂 i dont think a cats personality is based on what colour they are?

Nah, with you on that one. Every orange cat I've known has been a bit of a softy, boys especially tend to be cuddle monsters.

Now if you were talking about torties/calicos being naughty.....

OriginalSkang · 18/08/2026 12:59

My black cat is the naughtiest I've ever known

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 18/08/2026 21:31

Cheddar was the best cat that ever lived. She was full on! Adored people, had an opinion on absolutely everything, super affectionate. I wouldn’t say she was ‘crazy’ but she was absolutely fabulous! Such a character. Miss her terribly!

My experience:

Ginger toms - lazy and sleep all day. I’ve never owned a ginger female though.
Tabby toms - cuddle monsters, very affectionate, a bit wimpish.
Torties - feisty, naughty, ruthless predators, very affectionate with their people, huge personalities. I love all cats but IMO torties are the best by far (if you know what you’re getting into…)

TallagallaPenguin · 18/08/2026 21:51

Agree. Also, I still find it weird that so many people seem to call them “orange cats” - to me it’s as odd as saying a person has orange hair. It’s ginger! I really never heard anyone call them “orange cats” till maybe a few years ago online. Though I did some searching and the term does seem to have been around for ages. Ho hum.

MrsApplepants · 18/08/2026 22:26

I have found it to be true in my limited experience. My childhood orange cat had a screw loose and his favourite trick was getting stuck both up the chimney and on top of it, on the roof. I now have a small orange dog and he’s a nutter too so I think it applies to all ginger pets!

TutTutTutSigh · 18/08/2026 22:41

My ginger is a huge, timid, independent boy who occasionally turns into a velcro cat. His brother is black, mad as a box of frogs and has approximately half a brain cell but is the softest cat I've ever met.

Ask any horse owner about the reputation of chestnut mares!

Back to the orange cats. I have one - my first. Daft as a brush. Just like all the other black/white/tabby cats I've ever had. I think it is confirmation bias - people tell you orange cats are bonkers, your orange cat does something bonkers, ergo: it must be true.

My vet called mine red smoke once

i informed her he was definitely ginger as there was no brain in there

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 18/08/2026 23:01

Mine’s a lovely, cuddly boy, but definitely bonkers. Hullabalouie.

My ginger Tom is a bit dim. Loving and lovable though

mondaytosunday · 18/08/2026 23:32

I have one now and he’s a big softie. I had one years ago with extra toes and other than a proclivity for bringing home lives creatures from snakes to cicadas was just a regular cat.

GoldTie · 19/08/2026 07:15

I’ve got a ginger girl. She’s a bit on the odd side, I wouldn’t class as her as crazy though.

shellyleppard · 19/08/2026 07:24

Absolutely love ginger cats!!! We had one years ago. Used to walk with me to school. We would say to him to stay at the road before the main road. When I had dropped my sons off at school he would still be waiting. Absolute cuddle bug but wouldn't tolerate rats. We still miss him now 10 years later x

All cats are bonkers, no matter what coat design 😆That's why I love them.

Alwaystired23 · 19/08/2026 08:39

My ginger cats have both been male, and very sweet natured and loving. My current one loves being held like the precious baby he is 😻

DobbyTheHouseElk · 19/08/2026 08:42

My ginger cat was naughty and a real character. The tuxedo I have now is equally naughty and full off cuddles and mischief.

My tuxedo doesn’t speak at all, first silent cat I’ve had.

AssassinsEyebrow · 19/08/2026 08:48

Yanbu at all

I don't understand where its come from except maybe an extension of red head hate/ red head temper myth?

My ginger cats are the most docile, laid back, loving and vocal of all cats ive had. I've had all types except torties and I believe there's a reason for the phrase 'naughty tortie'!

I've never known a bonkers ginger, they're all chill & loving in my experience

MurielTheTerrible · 19/08/2026 08:52

My ginger boy is big, greedy, gentle and a bit of a loner, although does like to sit with me for a cuddle. He appears to have 2 sides though, I think he's a bit of a fighter once he's away from the house.
My black cat is bossy, loud and affectionate. My tabby was the best cat ever, loving, sweet and cuddly. The naughty tortie however was utterly mental. Liked a cuddle and would then bite you savagely. She loved to sit on top of the door and leap onto you as you passed. Stealer of chocolate, yoghurt and cheese. Total nutter.

I agree I find the term orange cats odd. I think it's a US term popularised by social media.

Actually known as Ginger Thug (GT)

“Ginger” is very much a British word for redhead or orange, and I think it hasn’t made it over to the U.S.

Off topic - but when did the term 'tuxedo cat' come into use. I've always known them simply as 'black and white cats'.

Sakura7 · 19/08/2026 10:11

My ginger boy definitely has candy floss for brains and has got himself into some scrapes, but most of the time he's quite lazy. He also got rescued quite late so socialisation took a while and he's still quite anxious. He has been known to run away from a fly...

His calico sister started out all sweet and innocent and is now a bit of a psycho!
