Cat out in heat

Cat has gone out again today in heat. She was driving me mad scratching at her cat flap so I opened it. Cat should be ok yeah?

Do you mean weather heat or that the cat is in heat and looking to get impregnated?

Boreded · 13/08/2026 11:41

She will come home if too hot, or find a shady spot for a while

inkgirl · 13/08/2026 11:45

Depends if you mean she's in heat or because of the weather, if its the weather she'll be fine. If in heat be prepared for kittens

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/08/2026 11:48

No the hot weather! Just checked on her she’s outside in the shade, seems happy enough.

She’s spayed so no kittens.

Mine are all in various spots in the garden 🏡

She'll be ok then, mine loves the sun and will stay out in all day given her the chance

Iheartmysmart · 13/08/2026 11:52

I’ve got the blinds down and fans going in most rooms but my little madam has found the only patch of sunlight and is fast asleep in it. She was also horrified at the frozen Lick-e-Lix I offered her earlier.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/08/2026 11:57

I’ve been keeping her in and letting her out too but she really wanted to go out again so I thought as I’m home today why not?

Our last cat was pure white so needed sunscreen on her ears and nose before going out - she always found a shady spot if it was too hot, and I used to pop water dishes in various places in the garden too. She'd have been furious at being kept in!

Cats are clever, she will be fine
Probably lying somewhere nice and cool
Just make sure there’s enough water for her when she comes back as it’s so dry everywhere so she won’t have found any water outdoors

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/08/2026 16:38

Got cat in just now. She was boiling hot! Stupid animal.

She does have lots of water inside.

I have two hairy Maine Coons. They go out and stretch on the slate stones or ceramic tiles or on the dirt in the shady flowerbeds. They’ll be fine.

WildGarlicSoup · 13/08/2026 17:56

Never given it a thought. Always had cats and they come and go as they please.

SchnitzelAgain · 13/08/2026 17:58

My black cat is stretched out on the patio like she’s on a sun lounger in Ibiza.

RockinCara · 13/08/2026 17:59

We have horses, dogs, rabbits and cats. The cats are the only ones I don’t worry about in a heatwave. Our female has been happily lounging in the garden all week. All the other animals are restless and fed up.

murasaki · 13/08/2026 18:01

Mine have been out all day, they move around shady spaces and I keep a water bowl outside topped up for them.

IdaGlossop · 13/08/2026 18:01

Mine spends most of the day outside, either sitting in shade or under the car with her tail sticking out. Cats know how to look after themselves.

Definitelygoing · 13/08/2026 18:01

Our older female cat wants to be outside in 35 degrees, it's cooler and 24 inside. However she seems unhappy with the heat, but whenever I bring her inside to demonstrate the relative coolness, she comes back out.
She has nice water in several places but was seen drinking out of the bird bath earlier.

SerendipityCat · 13/08/2026 18:07

She’ll be absolutely fine. One of mine spends most of the day in the shade under a tree, and only comes in the house to eat and drink. The other one sprawls on the cool bathroom floor in front of the washbasin so we can have the pleasure of stepping over her to wash our hands. 😄

chedderland · 13/08/2026 19:52

I’d never think to leave them inside. A cat will find shade if it’s too hot

Oldraver · 13/08/2026 19:59

Ours go out whenever they want (between 4am- 8pm) and in the hot weather out girl tends to disappear off

They then come in a dramatically throw themselves on the tiled floor

I did worry about her overheating though. I mean she’s 13 so she should know better.

Years ago before she adopted me (over lockdown) she came to my kitchen window and it was boiling hot and I put a bowl of water down and she drank almost all of it. So I think that’s why I worry. But her old owners were useless who only let her inside if they were there (no cat flap).

She is currently on the sofa washing herself.
