Cat has gone out again today in heat. She was driving me mad scratching at her cat flap so I opened it. Cat should be ok yeah?

Ours go out whenever they want (between 4am- 8pm) and in the hot weather out girl tends to disappear off

They then come in a dramatically throw themselves on the tiled floor

Mine does that. The dramatic throw.

he is out all day from morning to night.

then throws a mouse across the floor

Illbethereinaminute · 13/08/2026 20:52

My cat flap is open 24/7 so the cat comes and goes as she sees fit. There are plenty of trees around and she can hide under the garden furniture if she's that bothered. She's too old and set in her ways to change her habits but if she started going a bit demented then I would have to rethink for her own safety.

Bjorkdidit · 13/08/2026 21:00

Our cats have pretty much moved outside this summer. Even the long haired one, who seems fine (we had a previous long haired cat who we had to trim during heatwaves because he really suffered).

The 18 YO spends more time inside and I've had the curtains closed on the hottest days to try and keep the house as cool as possible for her but she also goes outside to lay in the sun, especially in the evening, we sit outside with them all.

They find shady spots in the daytime and have lots of water inside and out and seem perfectly happy. They mostly come in for food in the middle of the night, so I've been leaving dried food out for them.

At least it's supposed to be less hot from tomorrow.

VeryQuaintIrene · 13/08/2026 21:00

They are connecting with their African desert ancestry!

gamerchick · 13/08/2026 21:02

Didn't they originally come from the deserts? Probably will be ok, they're good at finding shade.

FairViewRosie25 · 13/08/2026 21:03

Bloody stupid dog has been falling asleep on the patio in full sun🙄

Yes I did see that, this year. Sometimes my cat gets really hot inside and likes a cold flannel.

I did also this summer try a vet tip of placing cat in washbasin of cold water but she leapt out of my arms and I’m surprised she’s still speaking to me. Still I have food and the dreamies.

My elderly cat is really suffering with this heat. She will only go out if I go with her so Ive spent this much cooler evening outside with her and she is so hsppy. During the day she has been hiding in a cupboard.

I almost did lose skin. Some stupid vet recommended it on Facebook. More fool me for trying it.

Toasty Boy Cat has been out for most of the day and just coming in for food. He declines water but has become partial to a bit of melted ice-cream. He's 13 and black. Goodness knows where ge goes but he's always toasty to touch.

Vitany · 13/08/2026 21:25

Yes she will. currently vacationing on a Greek island that's hot daily and full of happy cats roaming or lazying about.

SabrinaThwaite · 13/08/2026 21:26

My elderly cat has been baking herself in the south facing windows (between the closed curtains and the glass) or has been tucked up under the duvet. Likes pottering out to the garden to find a sunny spot to nod off in.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/08/2026 21:28

Ours are out all day in the garden in their ‘den’ in the shade. There is water close to them and i add extra water to their food during hot spells. In over 50 years of being owned by cats, they’ve always gone out in the sun.

ilovesushi · 13/08/2026 22:53

Depending where you live, they are probably more likely to find a cool spot outside. My two are making little indents in the earth in shady spots in the garden or getting right into a bug bush or shrub. They are not daft. They know how to keep themselves cool. I have water bowls inside and out so they're not going to go thirsty. The dog on the other hand wants to sit and bake in the sun.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 13/08/2026 22:55

I think as long as they have access to shady spots and the ability to come and go as they please, they’re fine. And obviously water etc. Mine likes those Felix cat soup things as he doesn’t like water much.

Gary has been sun worshipping all day, every day, in my flower beds!

Mine's hardly been at home at all for weeks, due to the hot weather! Just comes home to eat then goes out again.

Both of mine have been outside pretty much all day today. It's been hotter in the house than outside, and they've been happy lying around in deep shade under bushes. I managed to slosh one of them by mistake when I was watering my droopy hydrangea. He was rather cross with me!😂

ghostperfume6 · 13/08/2026 23:18

I’ve been putting cool mats down, fans, cat soup, water… he’s lying on a blanket FFS

Haha oh yes have had the 'dramatic flop' down in the kitchen as if to say 'it's far too hot for anything!' then catching mice at night!

Got to love a Gary.

timtamsarebetterthanpenguins · 14/08/2026 07:11

Mine come and go as they please - one will roast himself on the patio for hours, the other will go and pester the neighbours then flop on the kitchen floor like he’s put in a 12 hour shift at the factory 😂

Our boy ( not the sharpest tool in the shed ) doesn't want to be dragged away from his precious domain.
So , mid 30s , jet black fur "Oh I'll go and lard about on the parched earth"

His identical sister was under the bed .

You can see why we're glad he's neutered Grin
