Don’t try this in the heat

So on Facebook a vet’s tip for cooling down your cat was to place cat in a bowl/sink of cold water immersing the paws. Tried this with my cat, her tail and back legs got soaked and I only got a tiny scratch. Had to placate her with freshly cooked chicken. She’s now washing her tail dry. Do not do this!

Oh gosh 😅

daughterfromhell · 26/06/2026 14:26

Has this vet ever met a cat? 😂

Mine would have ripped my face off but she was a dick tbf.

INeedAnotherName · 26/06/2026 15:01

One would have to actually catch said cat.

It can take us ages even when she's ill and not moving much. Although that could just mean we are very unfit.

Ilovemyshed · 26/06/2026 15:03

My cat is curled up in a furry bed 🤷🏽‍♀️

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 26/06/2026 15:05

I’m concerned the cat will be freaked out by the bathroom as that’s the sink I used. Vet cannot have tried this him/herself only with a very placid cat (Turkish van? They like water).

Cat never goes in bathroom anyway. Sensible animal.

We used to bathe the guinea-pigs when it was hot , it gave them the rage against us but they bonded back with their piggy housemates . They were dried and out in clean bedding .

The cats.......? I like having skin on the outside of my body thanks .

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 26/06/2026 15:22

My cats idea of cooling down is for them to sit on my knee. They call it heat transfer. If I go down I hope they are charged with murder.
Fans, concrete floors, wet Lino and cool mats are rejected outright.

Cool mat rejected. She doesn’t mind a spray bottle, wet towel.

I’m just wondering how many cat owners tried this tip thinking “oh if the vet said it was possible then let’s try it!”. I’m surprised she didn’t scratch me more either.

Not unless I fancy a trip to a+e

Oldraver · 26/06/2026 16:00

I wouldn't even contemplate this with my two

I bought one of the cooling mats and they jumped at scratched it. Had to take it away before they exposed the innards

Blackcatahotcat · 26/06/2026 16:03

I asked dh if he’d hold the cat while I hosed him down with the shower (the cat, not dh). He just laughed and walked off.

purser25 · 26/06/2026 17:16

I get a wet cloth and rub it all over our cat he purrs but he is a laid back gentleman.

I've resorted to shutting the cat inside because it's 15 degrees cooler in than out. He is complaining because he'd rather lie under a bush and cook.

Danikm151 · 26/06/2026 17:22

My chat chases the water sprayer when I water the plants… I’ve sprayed her a few times…. She hasn’t tried to kill me…. Yet.

Elbowpatch · 26/06/2026 17:23

Depends on the cat I suppose. I had one that would sit in the fish tank if he got the lid open without being caught.

Ah well you couldn't do that any more where I live - hosepipe ban just been announced.

I tried a tip a few people had given me, putting the pouches in the fridge for a few hours. The LOOKS I got last night, followed by 2 cat's stalking away from the bowls stiffly and clearly unimpressed. They left it alone until it warmed up to room temperature (somewhere close to the mouth of a furnace here in the south east!)

Morepositivemum · 26/06/2026 19:00

My cat would kill me. Dead.

Overtheatlantic · 26/06/2026 19:03

I brush my girl while she’s eating. She lets me get in a few swipes before she tells me to fuck off. It cools her down.

Cats scathing looks are the best! With the stalk away and head and tail held indignantly high.

I read a feel-good news article about grateful zoo animals enjoying ice lollies given to them by their keepers…so I tried giving my cat an ice cube.

She of course ignored it with an expression of distain, so I tried playfully pushing it towards her back paw. She leapt away in horror, gave me a hugely affronted look, and stalked off to squeeze behind the window blind so she could bake in the direct sun.

NotDarkGothicMama · 26/06/2026 21:34

Hahaha your vet is a sadist.

My biggest cat has spent the past 3 days cooking herself in a tin-roofed garage. She only emerges in the evening when her alley cat friend appears to play with her and pass on fleas.

It wasn’t my vet it was some random comment on a facebook post about cats in the heat with an article attached.

See all these tigers and lions enjoying an ice lolly, they can’t be related to our domestic cats. But I did read that as cats are desert animals they can tolerate more heat and sunshine than we can.

My cats love water- and love splashing paws in it- but only 1 or 2 at a time never 4- unless it's a full bath tub and they will jump in.....
