Pebbles is mental

My gorgeous little kitten is about six months old, had his knackers cut off last month and recovered well. But he's started doing this weird thing, in 35 years of having cats I've never seen it before.

He grabs the end of his tail in his mouth and goes into a trance, purring really loudly and kneading with paws 🙀 Nothing can break him out of this, it goes on for about ten minutes 😵 If I gently try to remove his tail from his mouth he just goes round in circles and grabs it again 😂

He's otherwise fine and exceptionally loving, it's just so strange!

awwwww! Pebbles might be mental, but he’s gorgeous!

YelramBob · 08/02/2026 01:02

He is gorgeous 🥰 I got him on my birthday last year, he'd been dumped behind a building at only 8 weeks old 💔

He is a very handsome chap 😍
I guess he just likes to suck his thumb but as he doesn't have one, his tail will have to do.
My mum had a cat that always sucked her jumper, no one else's... cat's just gotta cat, there's no understanding it.

YelramBob · 08/02/2026 01:08

This was him when I got him, poor little scrap 😖

Can't argue with that, that's the joy of cats and all their weirdness!

I was heartbroken after the death of my other boy last year and said I wouldn't get another until it felt right. I had so many friends pushing rescue cats but none of them appealled to me until this little bugger appeared on my birthday - it was love at first sight 😺

Oh my that face.Heart stopper.

Id guess at a self soothing behaviour. Hes gorgeous. One of mine would bloody breastfeed from me if he could and gives it a good go. Hes not even a kitten anymore...

Toddlerteaplease · 08/02/2026 02:35

I had a cat who would suck fleece blankets in the same way. It was adorable.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/02/2026 02:36

That is one smug looking cat 😸

Overtheatlantic · 08/02/2026 02:54

That’s adorable. Mine had a favourite slipper that he would carry around late at night. They’re all nuts in their own way.

💕🥰he was so cute!

I live cats but tbh I'm not generally that gooey over kittens! But he's gorgeous!?

FrozenFebruary · 08/02/2026 04:06

What harm is it doing? Why do you want to stop him? He appears to be getting some comfort from it. Self soothing. I can't see the problem?

sashh · 08/02/2026 07:08

I think we need a pic of him doing this bizarre ritual.

CalzoneOnLegs · 08/02/2026 13:46

@YelramBob what sort of Monster would abandon a kitten 🤬🤬 Pebbles is ABSOUTLEY beautiful ❤️❤️

He’s lovely 🥰 one of my cats suckles on her blanket while she’s purring and kneading. She’s always done it since she was a baby. I think it’s soothing for her and reminds her of her mom. Somebody said it can be if they were taken away from their mom cat too young.

This is what he's like when he's in his little trance 😻😹

@FrozenFebruary I know he's self-soothing, it's just painful when he's on my lap with his sharp little claws. If he's next to me I just let him get on with it 😹

😂 He's such a happy little boy, loves his cuddles 🥰 Still very much in the cute kitten phase and full of trouble!

Our female cat does this on fluffy fabric, blankets & dressing gowns especially.... she spaces out, drools, suckles, makes biscuits and looks totally zoned put for a while then suddenly 'wakes up' stops and looks a bit embarrassed / ashamed and acts like it never happened! Odd ball!

They're such baffling, intriguing creatures aren't they. So tiny yet somehow manage to completely rule our homes and lives 🤔😻

I don't understand why you're removing his tail? I understand the clawing on your jap is painful, I'd put something underneath his claws or remove him. Put him on a blanket or cushion. He'll get the message he can't do this in your lap if that's what you want or put something underneath his paws.claws when he starts. 20 minutes is too long to just put up with being clawed at. No matter how utterly adorable he is ❤️

I don't try to remove his tail every time, he only started this weird ritual a few weeks ago and I was surprised by it 😅 He also seemed surprised himself. If he's on a blanket or cushion next to me I let him get on with it.

As for getting the message about what's acceptable or not....he's a cat and does whatever he likes and I just go along with it 😉🥰
