Someone shot my cat yesterday

I just want to vent really! Yesterday, our cat came home limping and bleeding - after being rushed to the out-of-hours vets, they told us he has an airgun pellet in his hip. He's probably going to be OK but it's still early days.

We live in a small village, and know a lot of the neighbours. So it's a horrible feeling to think that one of them is so cruel and nasty.

We've reported to the police but I doubt they'll be able (or inclined) to do much. I'm also asking around the neighbours I know to find out if they're aware of anyone trigger-happy with an airgun. Feel like I should warn other cat owners too.

I'm so angry and upset!

I'm sorry, what a horrible thing to happen. Give this as much local publicity as you can - it might flush the culprit out or at least shame them into not doing it again.

MichelleCancelled · 22/12/2025 08:07

We had this happen when I was a teenager, so upsetting. The cat was ok but stopped roaming far and wide.

People are awful, who would shoot a cat, so cruel.

PodMom · 22/12/2025 08:07

How awful. I’d definitely spread the word, ideally on social media. People will know who has an air gun. Maybe parents might think it’s their kid or a neighbour think it’s their neighbour? You might not get proof and the police might not be interested but it might make someone think twice, or a parent take an air gun off their teenager.

Goldenboysmum · 22/12/2025 08:08

Thats awful 😥 I'll never understand how humans can be so cruel, whether its to other humans or animals.

I really hope your cat is going to be alright ❤️

A cat tax picture of the daft little lad in question.

Yes, definitely going to do this.

I'm tempted to say that if you find out who did it, just post their name and address in the litter tray. I wouldn't want them hurt, but some torment could be devised.

There's quite a big permanent animal rights protest not far from where I live. The temptation to doxx the perpetrator to them is very strong! 😁

I am so sorry to hear that. What a gorgeous little beast. I agree trying to raise awareness of it locally, both to ensure other cat owners are warned and to at least make the perpetrator feel uncomfortable.

NotDarkGothicMama · 22/12/2025 08:25

He's a very handsome fellow. Poor lad, no wonder you're furious. I hope he makes a full recovery.

aforasshole · 22/12/2025 08:27

It won’t necessarily be a stereotypical trouble-making teenager. My very hoity-toity “middle class” father would shoot cats (one of many many reasons why I went NC) anytime they came into the garden. Now I have 3 cats it makes me feel so sick that he used to do that (probably still does) and trained my brother to do the same. It’s absolutely disgraceful that there are people out there who would do this. I have 3 cats and I keep them indoors because I’m paranoid about someone hurting them (they are very happy indoor cats). I hope your boy is okay, he looks adorable!

moggerhanger · 22/12/2025 20:52

He's home, and stoned to the wide on veterinary class As! Follow-up in a week, where they'll update on whether or not to try and take the pellet out. It's right at the top of his femur so a bit tricky apparently.

OP posts:
moggerhanger · 23/12/2025 19:59

Now he's in the vet hospital some distance away, awaiting surgery - the specialist cat orthopedic person feels it's better out than in. There's a fracture at the head of the femur that needs pinning as well.

I was holding up OK, but now I've started crying and finding it difficult to stop.

This happened to my friend's cat a couple of months ago. In the Midlands.

billiongulls · 23/12/2025 20:49

The police might investigate, they're is growing awareness of animal cruelty being linked with violence against people also

The vet says it's horrifyingly common. There are some sick cruel bastards out there.

Police have already said they'll file and forget, unless we can find evidence. Self-service crime investigation is a new one on me, but I guess they have to prioritise their use of resources.

@aforasshole I'm so sorry to hear about your father. I'm glad you escaped!

Our boy is the jolliest, most playful little soul. His favourite thing is to pretend-attack DH's hand, biting and doing the rabbit kick, but no claws out and barely pressing with his teeth.

OP posts:
pilates · 23/12/2025 21:08

So sorry @moggerhanger this happened to us too. We think it was done by a neighbour but we couldn’t prove it. The vets didn’t remove the pellet as they said it could cause more damage. Hope he will be ok.

bignewprinz · 23/12/2025 21:22

When I was younger my friend was shot in the neck with an air rifle and nearly died. Not sure why they are legal tbh. Clearly lots of cunty people own them! Hope your lovely puss feels better soon - really awful 😞

Yes, given the harm they can do, it seems very odd that they're unrestricted!

Oh your poor cat, dirty bastards that do this! I hope your cat makes a full recovery.

I can remember being in my grans when i was younger and someone shot an air pellet gun through her window, narrowly missing me. Some people are sick in the head!

PeonyPatch · 23/12/2025 21:28

Oh I’m so sorry to hear this. It makes me feel so sad anyone would do this to your cat 😢
