Pill in a Dreamie possible? Ideas please!

I have a fussy, anxious cat who is going to the vets Monday. Not ill as such but dry patches round neck/ ears plus overdue vaccinations.
Getting him in basket and to vets is traumatic for him and us! So, have a Garbenton tablet (expensive aren't they!) and need to get it in him early Monday morning. He eats dry food and likes cheesy dreamies.
Should I try with first crunch of day or disect a dreamie (if that is even possible).
Any ideas welcome! Thanks.

Will your cat eat these? If so you could smother it in here or crush it up and mix it in?

I hear you ! Mine is on twice daily gabapentin . The only way she will take it is lic e lix ( cat yoghurt!) on her food with the pill just in the yoghurt . She devours it no issue x

RoseInBloome7 · 20/12/2025 12:08

As in crushed up

EmeraldJeanie · 20/12/2025 12:16

Fussy little sod won't eat wet stuff at the moment. Fortunately, a good drinker...have feeling I will be as well after vets!

Been googling and pill pockets suggested. Have pet shop near us (expensive) so could try if Dreamie disection doesn't work. Have one tablet...

We buy the easy pill stuff and for the pills he really really hates, we then stick the dreamies onto the easy pill. Ie pill in the easy pill putty, surrounded by dreamies. Also always before he eats and I do my best to work him into a greed frenzy by dropping a few regular dreamies, then the pill one, with a few extra! 🤣🤣🤣

NewCushions · 20/12/2025 12:25

Oh, and the vet sells easy pill in individual sachets so you don't have to buy a massive one!

toomuchcrapeverywhere · 20/12/2025 12:25

Crush it up and put it in a lick e lix.

Renamed · 20/12/2025 12:27

Piece of Webbox Chewy stick - easy to reform around a pill

FruitBadger · 20/12/2025 12:28

Easy Pill is brilliant, if you do go down that route.

Tisforptarmigan · 20/12/2025 12:33

I saw a tip on Tik Tom and it real works. Get a licky lix - stick the pill to the top edge of the tube with a bit of the paste. Start giving. Cat licky lix - as it is eating just push the pill into its mouth as it eats and carry on with the paste. One just gobbles it up as it greedily eats the rest of the licky lix without noticing. It’s such a brilliant way to give a pill and goes not cause my cat stress.

My cat has had a course of antibiotics this week and I’ve just put each pill in a bit of pate. He’s loved it! I think he’s going to miss his twice daily pate once the course is finished! I’m sure it’s not good for him to have pate but at least he’s taken the pills happily.

Pashazade · 20/12/2025 12:44

I find cheddar cheese also works, small piece warm it up with your fingers put crushed or whole tablet in mould into a ball and give to cat, or motorbike gloves, a towel and a pill popper!

singthing · 20/12/2025 12:57

If none of the tips above work, Lidl (probably others) do this kind of freeze-dried chicken treat. Pick a nice chunky one out of the bag, make a small slit with a sharp knife and push pill in. Feed a few normal ones first then slip the pilled one in.

Source: some kind of psychic cat who saw though every other method known to man.

FuzzyWolf · 20/12/2025 13:00

Finally, if food doesn’t work, wrap a towel round him, cuddle him with back legs against your chest, put the pill in the back of his mouth and then move to blow gently on his face. The blowing reflex will make him swallow.

EmeraldJeanie · 20/12/2025 13:06

Thank you all.
Going to try Trixie/ hiding place for tablets which just bought from pets shop nearby.
Going to give one without tablet first thing tomorrow alongside dreamies and take it from there!

My cats like it when you crush it into lickylicks or marmite.

But if the Gabapentin are anything like human ones they're pretty big aren't they?

CheeseWisely · 20/12/2025 13:17

Our cat used to have thyroid pills and he is very pill resistant. We eventually had success with those stick treats, we’d break a piece off and stuff the pill into it, then break the rest of the stick up and give him all the pieces. It usually worked. Weebox brand were easier as they’re softer than the supermarket own brand ones we tried. I’d do a quick google to check if Gabapentin are ok to be crushed up before you opt for that method, unfortunately the thyroid ones aren’t supposed to be 😏

EmeraldJeanie · 20/12/2025 13:57

The tablet is quite small...
Never given him a tablet before so hope likes the Trixie pill pocket putty stuff. At least have Sunday to experiment minus tablet. He used to like stick things but went off them. However, if this doesn't work could try again.
At 13 pounds and only one tablet, a lot riding on being successful!

That chewy Italian ham works for us. It is like sellotape, so if you wrap some round a pill, it will not come undone

EmeraldJeanie · 22/12/2025 07:33

Well, it's in him. Almost too easy so awaiting a throw up or something...
So, Trixie hiding place snacks worked. Putty like and wrapped tablet in it. He was wanting to be fed so that absolutely helped. Trixie with tablet alongside 2 cheese dreamies followed by breakfast...
Vet appointment in couple of hours...

Still put up bit if a struggle with cat basket but got to vet. Vaccinated, flea treatment etc and claw clip. Signs of fleas which irritating for basically indoor cat with catio/ patio. Slight heart murmur to be monitored. Back in 4 weeks. Got calming tablet ready....
Washing stuff and about to go to pet shop for flea stuff to put about place. Any good non toxic to all but fleas you can recommend?
Not seen any bouncing about and nor did vet but seems they are about...

I always used to wrap some corn beef around the pill for my elderly cat. It’s quite mouldable.

Barhumbugg · 23/12/2025 07:00

I found Churu Treat Rolls at Pets at Home and they worked amazingly. They are like a meaty stick with yoghurt inside. However my two have now worked out I'm hiding something in part of and eat the treat but leave the tablet!

EmeraldJeanie · 23/12/2025 12:31

Thanks all.
Putting tablet in moulded Trixie pocket worked this time but good to have more ideas if this stops working.
Another appointment and tablet in 4 weeks....
