I’ve wondered this. I had a cat who adored custard and quite a few who lap the milk from the bottom of cereal bowls* like it’s got divine powers so I’m not sure it’s true they don’t have a sweet tooth!

*yes I am unhygienic

menopausalfart · 03/06/2025 21:50

Mine likes sweet stuff too. He also likes mayo.

buffyandspikeandfaith · 03/06/2025 21:51

Mine wants to eat five guys Cajun fries, onion bhajis and coriander rice. Not sure he’s actually a cat

my previous one loved mackerel pate with cayenne pepper and any form of dairy including lemon cheesecake

TidalShore · 03/06/2025 21:51

I've always assumed it was the fat/butter they liked rather than sugar

JohnnyLuLus · 03/06/2025 21:55

The day we brought our rehomed cat home she stole a burger from one of child's plates. I've always had cats, but never had one who would steal food so brazenly. She's been with us for two years now and I'm amazed and what she will desperately try to eat (when straight after her own dinner). Pizza, watermelon, cake, bread and butter, as well as the usual meat you'd expect her to want. She's got the stomach of a horse and the constitution of an ox.

No worries, I have just eaten the bit of cake she was gnawing at.

Mine’s not usually fussed about cake - unless it’s a chocolate chip muffin. He will take one out of a box and run away with it, and if you leave the paper cake case of one anywhere in a room, he’ll find it and chew it to bits.

I assume mayo and custard etc it’s the fat or milk content. Don’t understand his love of pasta and bolognese though.

SilverBlue56 · 03/06/2025 21:58

It's definitely the butter.

Mine especially loves to lick a discarded butter wrapper (he puts his paw on it to hold it still..) and will steal cake, or even just the cake wrapper to lick the grease.

Unsurprisingly he's often on a diet.

TheCurious0range · 03/06/2025 22:05

Ours will eat anything biscuit crumb falls, it's his, he tried to swipe a banana pancake from DS' plate a few weeks ago. He really likes green beans and broccoli which I've never known in a cat before, loves DS' left over porridge if he doesn't scrape his bowl or out it in the dishwasher straight away, I assume that's the milk.
Our old cat had a terrible sweet tooth, God help you if you tried to eat a doughnut in his vicinity, he also loved curry and used to eat the strawberries straight from my plants in the garden.

LavenderBlue19 · 03/06/2025 22:09

We have to hide bread and cakes in a cupboard because ours will tear through a packet to get to them. He'll yoink a crust off your plate before you've even noticed he's there. Absolute favourite is muffins.

He also like chips, pizza, and olives. Oh and pasta, cooked or dry.

Icanflyhigh · 03/06/2025 22:09

It's a myth that cats don't have a sweet tooth - they most definitely do!

Both of ours love cake and my experience at my cattery, with meds, Thyronorm is easiest to administer as it's sweet, tastes like the kiddie med calpol.

What?

Why do cats like cake
Why do cats like cake
CuddlesKovinsky · 04/06/2025 10:27

Because you have cake and therefore they want cake.

Not surprised to see a Ginge involved in cake larceny there @Judystilldreamsofhorses ... 🤦‍♀️

crowstreet · 04/06/2025 10:42

I’ve always suspected it’s yeast - my cat loved everything with yeast in it. But then, they have little quirks and preferences just like humans.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/06/2025 12:45

My childhood cats adored yoghurt. I don’t believe they prefer sour stuff at all.

OfDragonsDeep · 04/06/2025 12:53

My cat likes cake and the tomato sauce that baked beans are in 🤷‍♀️

Needmorelego · 04/06/2025 13:03

My childhood cat ate everything.
Literally everything.
She also puked a lot. Gross.
The cat my parents had until recently had a sensible diet and didn't tend to snaffle snacks but I once gave her some chocolate mousse to lick off my finger and she was "whoooooh what is this 😵‍💫".
She also went completely nuts over some catnip and refused to go near the stuff ever again 😂

MyKingdomForACat · 04/06/2025 13:07

Cat I had in the 80s was partial to a slice of walnut cake. The lovely boy I have now will lick the cereal bowl clean. I say to dh “just bung it back in the cupboard” (jokes). We also leave him the empty butter container to polish off too

Ollybob · 04/06/2025 13:15

Mine likes custard tarts and chocolate mousse, also loves crisps/crackers and will swipe them out your hand!

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 04/06/2025 13:42

My boy dcat is a veg addict.
The girl dcat eats cake. . They both join us for mealtimes... Last night dcatB had cabbage and broccoli.. DcatG had a doughnut...
Dcats are sent to puzzle us.
They have a personal toilet regularly cleaned and refreshed but prefer digging my bloody plants and shitting there..

That made me laugh. I probably would have done the same as I'm a firm believer in the 5-second rule as well. Just give it a quick blow first to get rid of any germs 😂

Pianoaholic · 04/06/2025 13:52

My (fat) cat Herbie hasn't ever really gone for cake, but he adores cheese, and appears from nowhere if we're making a cheese sandwich!

Octavia64 · 04/06/2025 13:54

I have three.

all of them will wolf down lots of milk.
one is a total dustbin of a cat and can smell chocolate at three miles and cake at even further.
the other two think human food is disgusting and won’t eat it even if you give them some.

DominoRules · 04/06/2025 13:54

My cat rejects meat - fresh roast chicken, ham etc is ignored but she can hear Pringles being opened a mile away! Any flavour is devoured with a really loud purr. She also loves a bit of cake (but not chocolate) and marmite on toast. Also loves to lick the last dregs of a yoghurt pot, she and the dog sit and wait about 2cm from my face when I eat a yoghurt so I have to do it in secret…..

BobbyBiscuits · 04/06/2025 14:41

I can understand if it had creamy or buttery icing, but I've not known one to eat cake itself.
Mine love yogurt. They like licking the carton after I've finished!
I also thought they couldn't taste sugar or sweet things. It must be the texture. And the fact it's forbidden? 🤣
