soupyspoon · 03/06/2025 21:47

Ive had a couple of cats now that like cake

I always thought they didnt have a sweet tooth or couldnt taste sweet or something
This one literally went in for the kill on my slice of cake on my plate.

Our cat liked cake but she was especially drawn to a parkin I made which was very sweet but also gingery. I would have to push her away. Also the same with marmite sandwiches. She didn't really beg for food, just these two things!

Deathraystare · 04/06/2025 15:25

Our first one would stalk Dad up the bed for a bit of his omelette or scrambled egg. Of course she got her way!!!

lunaswand · 04/06/2025 16:01

mine isn't a big cake fan but does love flies, spiders & fluff from underneath the fridge

I think you will find he doesn't want the fluff but that massive ball-shaped tarantula living under the fridge. The fluff tastes of the potential yuminess 🕸

Here he is eating his greens!

It's very odd, my previous cat Bluebell came home with cake all over her chops once. It wasn't my cake.

spicemaiden · 04/06/2025 16:29

We can’t leave any cake/bread/biscuits out, nor mushrooms - oddly

Ketzele · 04/06/2025 17:37

Mine don't like anything sweet, or any dairy products (weirdos). They both like dried pasta, and one of them is crazy for uncooked cauliflower and broccoli.

FionnulaTheCooler · 04/06/2025 17:41

I had one who was crazy for squirty cream and the dregs of a mcdonald's mcflurry. If I'd known her last day was going to be her last day I'd have got her a full mcflurry to have all to herself.

L00pyLou · 04/06/2025 17:43

It's the fat content, my childhood cats were devils for sponge :)

Alongthetowpath · 04/06/2025 17:53

Mine loves tomato soup (but strangely, turns his nose up at chicken soup), he will lurk on a dining chair and then explode up onto the table for a few frantic laps at the bowl.

He is also an accomplished toast thief, and has been known to steal it straight from the toaster if we don’t get to it fast enough when it pops up.

Tuebrook · 04/06/2025 17:56

DCat loves mince pies.

AInightingale · 04/06/2025 18:00

Many seem to, it's odd.
Also odd, they will also eat any old crap you throw in the garden for the birds, but would scorn it if you put it in their dish.

2Pandora · 04/06/2025 18:04

Because it isn’t cat food . Simples!!!!

JellicleCat · 04/06/2025 18:24

My cat adores cake and biscuits. She also pinched a buttered, fruit scone from the plate of a visitor - I was mortified. And I once chased her around the house trying to retrieve a whole jam doughnut that she'd gone off with 😮She loves human food except for fruit and veg.

Snozzlemaid · 04/06/2025 18:45

Our cat has a real sweet tooth as well. She loves marshmallows in particular.
Dd had some flumps and offered her a bit not expecting her to want it but she wolfed it down. The packet got left out on the sideboard over night with a clip closing the top and the next morning it was on the floor with lots of teeth holes pierced in it. She’d clearly been trying her best to bite through the plastic to get to the marshmallows.

SilverBlue56 · 04/06/2025 18:51

Mine has also chewed through the packet to get at some fat balls for the birds, left by the back door! I don't think he actually ate much fortunately.

soupyspoon · 04/06/2025 19:11

I cant reply or react to all your posts because I usually use the laugh icon and it has gone

Some good examples of cat theft and sweet tooths here.

To clarify it was a cake called milk cake, you use melted butter and milk in the batter. Quite a lot of sugar but I also added some chai latte sachets, strong cardamom flavour, not quite as strong as I would have liked once cooked but a bit of a spice flavour.

But Ive noticed before with her and previous cakes that they liked cake and Im sure I remember a vet telling me once they cant taste sweet things.

mine used to like broccoli 🥦

Grazyna80 · 04/06/2025 19:30

Mine loves to lick off sugar from doughnuts , and ice cream. I think that they absolutely can taste sugar ! Maybe they evolved ?

marshmallowpuff · 05/06/2025 00:30

Mine also likes sweet things and is particularly mesmerised by marshmallows! Once found an unopened packet of them behind my bed full of tooth punctures, which she had hidden away and was clearly trying to get into the packet.

Snap! (See my post above…) Mine really goes nuts for them!

itsnotachicken · 05/06/2025 00:50

One if my cats loves to lick the icing off Party Rings!

Ponderingwindow · 05/06/2025 01:16

I have had multiple vets swear vats can’t taste sweet. Yet I have had more than one cat who loved them. One who loved bubble gum. Another that is obsessed with lollies. She will steal them and eat them if given any opportunity.

mathanxiety · 05/06/2025 03:27

Cake is often made with butter.

Mine likes doughnuts too.
