How often does your cat get stood on?

We had our beloved previous girl until she was pts last year aged ten (cancer) and I don’t remember her ever being stood on or tripped over. After we let her go, we adopted a one year old boy. He’s two now and a delightful little chaos-maker.

I would kill anyone who hurt him with my bare hands, yet it is me who hurts him as I constantly tread on his little feet. He’s like a silent ninja when food’s on the go, popping up out of nowhere, and he does this thing where he “races” you to get through a door first. DP tends to trip over him more than I do. No real harm is ever done, but I am afraid it could be at some point. I sound like the worst type of abuser, but he is literally forever under my feet!

Is it because he’s orange? Do your cats get stood on? DP says it’s just part of being a cat - ?

Cat tax of the poor, ill-treated creature attached.

Never really but he's 8kgs and very fluffy and never stops talking so he's hard to miss. He did sit on my feet though today as I was standing by his food bowls.

Our previous girl was pure white so I guess much more visible!

Not trod on but i'm forever falling over mine as she weaves between my feet when i'm sorting food. She is also very loud at feeding time!
She does have a tendency to stand behind doors though so sometimes gets bumped by them, she's daft.
Also pure white

Cat tax (she was younger here, now 19)

My sweet old ginger boy was constantly under my feet. Got trodden on a few times but only once in a way that actually hurt him,.which was awful but he was ok and I paid for my sins in cuddles treats and a large scratch on my ankle..

CleanShirt · 19/05/2025 10:45

He is orange. There's your answer. He's waiting for his turn with the shared brain cell.

Orange guy being orange for comparison.

This is why i never wear shoes indoors!

Mine creeps up silently behind me when I'm in the kitchen but tends to get kicked as I step back, rather than trodden on iykwim.

MyPresumablyScrotum · 19/05/2025 10:49

The two girl cats, not a chance. The other one? All the time. He likes to "herd" people towards his food bowl and cannot conceive you might be going somewhere other than his food bowl. He's also black and fond of lying full stretch on the stairs - I had to get motion sensor stair lights to prevent further injury.

ExpressiveDelivery · 19/05/2025 10:55

One of our girls is nicknamed The Underfoot Cat. She is dark, small and stealthy and likes to sleep on the landing (where the warm water pipes go under the floorboards) so frequently gets tripped over by anyone that gets up in the night without putting the lights on, also gets under your feet when she wants to be fed. We have got Nest smoke alarms with motion sensor nightlights now which are really helpful on the landing at night. The battery goes in that one and the one at the bottom of the stairs faster than the others in the house and I'm sure its the cats setting them off all night long.

The late Cheddar used to
get in the way, because she had absolutely no concept of personal space. My friend used to go to dit down, and was adamant she’d move. She never did!

Some cats are just daft and never seem to learn that if they hang around under your feet they are likely to get stood on.
All of mine have been stood on at least once but they have managed to learn to be more careful if they don't want to be stood on.

Octavia64 · 19/05/2025 12:19

Mine are nicknamed trip hazard as they love to run between my feet.

bloody nuisance.

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/05/2025 12:20

Tread on, no, trip over, frequently.

MagellanicPenguin · 19/05/2025 13:12

Well after saying I have never stood on my cat as he's big guess what I did today and on the tail which he is so proud of. Only on the fluffy part but he looked so hurt and my apologies just weren't cutting it. A tin of cat tuna and we are friends again.

Oh, I'm very pleased it's not just me. I follow a lot of animal rescues on social media, and have visions of him ending up in a video as a sad story where he's upped and left due to being trod on/tripped over. Yesterday he caught a mouse and then a bird - I opened the back door and heard a weird noise, like someone was coughing, saw him sitting under one of the garden chairs, and then like in a cartoon a bird literally flew out of his mouth so presumably he had been choking on feathers, but he got it later - so there's not much coming over him.

Love seeing everyone's trip hazards!

Elton used to get under our feet all the time! The best one was when I walked into the kitchen and heard a persistent burglar alarm type meow and realised that my husband had inadvertently trapped him against a kitchen cabinet with his shins! He normally just shrugged it off as the price he paid for living with incompetent slaves. Oh and by the way I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the Terry Pratchett quote about his cat's name being That Bloody Cat!

minipie · 19/05/2025 18:20

Orange and white cat here

She mostly doesn’t get underfoot but she likes to go up or down the stairs just one or two steps ahead of me. So right where I’m about to step. Bonus points if I’m carrying something bulky and can’t see her.

She also has multiple homes with various neighbours - is this a ginger thing? Or just cos she is sociable and gorgeous <biased>

minipie · 19/05/2025 18:22

He’s a cutie! When we lost our girl last year we adopted him indecently quickly, and I worried he was the wrong cat (not her) and that I wouldn’t be able to love him. It took him a few months to really settle and become “our cat” but god we love his furry funny little face so much. He dances. Even our vet has never seen the like.

I've stepped on her tail a couple of times but she's legged me up so many times I'm starting to think she's taken out life insurance on me, the furry little psychopath.

Castlerigg · 19/05/2025 22:25

I’ve never trodden in the ginger one, but the tortie is like yours @Judystilldreamsofhorses, and will race to get in front of you, so she either trips me up or makes me overbalance trying not to step on her. I don’t always manage it. She’s an arse, it’s her own fault.
