How often does your cat get stood on?

We had our beloved previous girl until she was pts last year aged ten (cancer) and I don’t remember her ever being stood on or tripped over. After we let her go, we adopted a one year old boy. He’s two now and a delightful little chaos-maker.

I would kill anyone who hurt him with my bare hands, yet it is me who hurts him as I constantly tread on his little feet. He’s like a silent ninja when food’s on the go, popping up out of nowhere, and he does this thing where he “races” you to get through a door first. DP tends to trip over him more than I do. No real harm is ever done, but I am afraid it could be at some point. I sound like the worst type of abuser, but he is literally forever under my feet!

Is it because he’s orange? Do your cats get stood on? DP says it’s just part of being a cat - ?

Cat tax of the poor, ill-treated creature attached.

You’d think being this big you’d notice him, but he too is a trip hazard extraordinaire! Will lie down behind your feet when cooking. He will also sit of his back legs front arms raised to be picked up. Has been known to do the collie trick where you walk in the door and he jumps into your arms as a welcome. Best emotional support cat!

Mine loves to get under my feet. I have to be really careful on stairs because she is prone to running through my legs whilst ascending and descending.
More of an issue is her climbing on the kitchen worktop and putting her paw through the hinged side of the fridge when I open it. I’ve shut her arm in it many a time!

Your dancing cat is adorable! I wish he could give lessons to his peers so we could all have dancing cats.

As for paw/tail treading, it happens every once in a while. Cue outraged yowls and lots of anguished apologies and penitence, and most probably treats and catnip.

Mine is always under my feet and getting stood on... or I'm tripping over him. He also appears our if nowhere and runs through doors sometimes narrowly missing his head being chopped off.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 19/05/2025 22:38

Trodden on the odd tail. Tripped over plenty of times. Biggest issue here is them trying to dive through a doorway just as the door is being closed and getting lightly squished (obviously, not seriously hurt - just requiring apologies and dreamies).

My old boy - all the time! He would sit behind me gazing adoringly and then wonder why he got stepped on when I moved backwards a step. And follow me round, and dive in my seat so he got sat on more than once
new boy - no. He’s 7.5kg and hard to miss

Canelo often runs between our legs and then lies down, tripping us up. Fortunately he's never been stepped on (yet!) Cat tax here...

I taught him to stand back and supervise from a safe distance in the kitchen with treats/snacks (ie, wait there and I'll keep you topped up with tasty things) encouraged him to let us get up/down the stairs before passing through (largely successful) and an occasional WELL YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN STANDING THERE SHOULD YOU? to emphasise the point. That and always being at least vaguely aware of what's lurking around our feet in case its fluffy and breakable (generally because he's busy chatting shit at us all the time).

We regularly tread on or trip over our maniac tortie (not the ginger, tabby or black and white). She seems to have no idea of personal space or concern for her own safety, so also fairly regularly gets hit in the face while jumping up onto things while you are doing something, like making a bed. I've never had a cat like her, she is completely bonkers, is obsessed with empty crisp packets and will arrive even from deep sleep anytime she hears one being finished. I am her favourite slave and she has learnt to jump from the floor onto my shoulder like a parrot, though she tends to end up with her bum in my face so it's less cute than it sounds

I've steppped on mine once or twice and if looks could kill I be stone cold dead.

DCat got booted squarely in the head by DH today - he leaned forward and extended his leg for balance, perfect head height. She also regularly crosses right in front of me or I just plain don't see her, resulting in a bump. She's only little (7lbs) which I think works in her favour as she just gets shunted on impact. We love her, really!

We have had no standing-on for a week, however we did have an incident where daft cat misjudged his jump to get into bed with me, and ended up scrabbling around the overhanging duvet before dropping to the ground. He also frequently threatens to fall off things because he tends to roll around purring his head off when he’s being petted. (DP now refuses to stroke him if he’s in the cat tree!)

Did he quickly start washing his nether regions after the fall?

BurntBroccoli · 26/05/2025 23:00

Mine does exactly the same! Silent ninja and just has to go downstairs before me or through a door.
I’m very careful going downstairs needless to say!

He’s ginger - this is a thing I think - had to be careful with laser mouse with mine as he’d run into walls. He had the biggest heart though.
A scientist has found why they are ginger - it’s a bit of a string of DNA related to colour that’s missing, the ginger seems to be what happens when colour instruction is missing I think. It is in the X chromosome (why more males are ginger, and girls calico)- it does also affect other stuff as well though, eg ginger cats are more prone to cancer - personally I was waiting for them to say a bit of the brain is affected but they didn’t, but are still researching!
It’s a Japanese research scientist who picked this up after retirement from his normal research, as he loves ginger cats. Please excuse my above explanation as I love cats, love ginger cats, but failed science o level so can’t even re explain it well.

Only occasionally so far with our brother and sister pair, but we also have two Border Terriers and a tiny house so it can be like an assault course at times. And for anyone wondering, it's generally harmonious between the four of them as the kittens were found abandoned at about six weeks old. I did question my sanity initially but all has worked out well, but having cats again has reminded me how stupid dong are in comparison.

No, he stormed off in a huff, which was a shame as DP was away at the cup final and I had a whole bed to myself!

@MsJinks i had no idea ginger cats were more prone to cancer - that makes me so sad. We lost our beautiful white girl to intestinal lymphoma last year aged ten, and I really hoped this boy would have a long and happy life with us. White cats are prone to skin cancer and we were so diligent about putting sunscreen on her ears even though she hated it, but it got her somewhere else instead.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses - ahh I am sorry about your last cat - it’s awful to lose them isn’t it. I’m sorry I included that info now and would say that it probably isn’t as strong evidence as stuff in humans, and please don’t over worry. I’ve also known some very long lived gingers.
I always said I didn’t want a ginger cat but all the cats I have had have been some sort of rescue plus I didn’t want one reminding me of my previous cat when I ended up with my ginger boy. I’m totally converted - he was a very special cat - totally loving, biggest heart and funny too.
Enjoy your boy.
