My poor boy died suddenly last night

I don't know WTF happened, I'm still in shock. He ate his dinner and cuddled up with me on the sofa all evening. At 4.30am I heard him use the litter tray but followed by a crash and a howl. Found him collapsed on the bathroom floor, his pupils were huge and he was gasping for breath. The 2 other cats came in so I shooed them away, a minute later he wasn't breathing 😞 I can't believe it, he was only 8.

RIP Woody cat, he was such a gentle soul 💔💔💔

Reason for mentioning is , do you think it could have been anything to do with Thursday - meat or fuel left around in the neighbourhood that Woody might have picked up ?
As daughter and son in law lost their cat, Willow ( poisoned ) in similar circumstances at this time of year .

@Yiayoula I don't think it was anything to do with smokey Thursday, he definitely wasn't poisoned.

So sorry, OP! At only 8 I would be going for a post mortem for him as I’d need to know the cause

His life may have been shorter than he deserved - but I'm sure it was a very happy one with you. 💐

I had to go to work this morning and carry on like nothing had happened, fortunately my boss is an animal lover and cut me some slack.

The worst thing was getting home this afternoon, I keep expecting him to run in and jump up for head bumps 😔

Oh this is so sad. What a lovely boy. My first cat had a stroke and was about 10. Similar sounding symptoms. She didn't die immediately but did have to be PTS.

He did have a very happy life with me. He was a very unassuming, undemanding cat who just rolled with it. He did occasionally get stuck on roofs and also got bitten by a snake two years ago, that wasn't pretty 😳

So sorry for you & Kloppy losing him so suddenly. I can imagine how strange and sad it must feel him not being there when you got home. He sounds lovely,a big, handsome, friendly brown tabby boy.

Aw, what a beautiful cat. Our lovely boy passed away last weekend. It’s so sad to lose such good furry friends. Thankfully it was quick and at home, similar to ours. RIP dear Woody, find the door for the endless summer dear boy.

Thank you for all your replies. I'm traumatised from finding him dying on the bathroom floor, I can't get that image out of my head. I know he went quickly and didn't suffer but I feel guilty 😭

It's highly unlikely you could have got him to the vet immediately or that they could have done anything (or that a car journey wouldn't have traumatised him in a state), so please don't feel guilty.

It's the first time a cat has died in front of me, previous ones have been PTS at the vets.

How dreadful and for it to happen seemingly out of the blue like that. One of ours collapsed and died before we could get her to the vet, but the difference was that she was poorly (blood in poo, off her food, lethargy) and we were about to take her up there for a follow-up appointment. We went up straight away, but she'd already gone. It's awful when they're ill, but to some extent, the fact of it softens you up a little. You had no warning, nothing to prepare you. Woody was a beautiful boy and he knew how much he was loved. RIP sweet one🌻

It’s heartbreaking to lose them in any circumstances but even more shocking for you in this case. I’m so very sorry for your loss
