Dog attack. Sad outcome

Just need to get it out. We have friends visiting with their dogs. As we were heading out, they went after one of my cats. One dog injured and my beautiful moggy fatally injured.

We’re all reeling. It was a tragic accident as a result of a moments distraction/bad decision. We were about to put the dogs in the cars cars, the driveway gate was shut so they were off lead. The cat ran, the working dogs chased.

It happened so so quickly and we got her to the vet within a short time but once she’d had painkillers, it was clear she was dying, confirmed by an x-ray. DDs and I were able to say goodbye, DSs couldn’t get there in time with DH so helped bury her. Just so sad.

That’s so awful. 😢 I’m really sorry to hear this Grumpysaurus. You must all be heartbroken. Small comfort but it’s good you were able to get her to the vet quickly so she didn’t suffer unnecessarily. 💐

Thank you, it doesn’t feel real tbh. We’re all wandering round crying at random moments. I guess it’s partly shock. The DC are late teens/early 20s. It’s a very long time since I’ve seen 22yo DS cry but he just wanted to be hugged while he sobbed like a baby.

I imagine your kids have grown up with your moggy. It’s such an upsetting thing that’s happened to you all. I don’t really have any other words of comfort. I can only offer my sympathies.

Oh god I’d be so angry at them not putting the dogs on a leash knowing there’s cats in the house that they would try to kill 😭

By the sounds of the OPs post I don't think she's laying the blame it's the dog owners.

Poor cat that must be so awful but I'm glad you managed to get to the vets quickly.

Poor cat. I'd never forgive my friends or their dogs for that.

Sadly even quite passive dogs that have been brought up with cats can attack a cat if the prey drive kicks in (I've seen similar once - but in that case the kitten survived).
Look after yourselves, and just to reiterate how very sorry I am that you have had to go through this

Thank you for all your kind words. I had a rotten nights sleep, as did DH.

I have no anger towards our friends, they are mortified and upset. They have 2 cats - the prey drive kicked in when my cat ran and that was that.

Your understanding of the dogs prey drive is humane and realistic, generous to take that view when you are all so upset, but still, realistic.

You say the dogs are ‘working dogs’ so presumably well trained. And also socialised to their own cats. And yet, prey instinct took over. This is exactly what people need to understand before draping babies on dogs i
or thinking it funny that toddlers crawl into their crates for the TikTok views.

So sad for you, but I hope your strength and clarity over the issue helps raise some awareness.
