Cat toy recommendation

I have a house cat ( to aggressive to be allowed out ) so I want to buy him a new toy .
He has ping-pong balls , mice, lasers and light up balls .
And a large well used scratching post
He isn't that fussed about catnip.

So what toys have you bought your feline overlord that meets with their approval ?

One of those cardboard scratching boxes. Cat 1: totally obsessed. Cat 2: never touched it

Giant tunnel - both cats love it. Move it around the house and it's a whole new toy!

minipie · 24/01/2025 00:51

Hmm dcat did love a particular catnip toy I got her but all other toys (including other catnip ones) have met with disdain. She does love chasing a scrunched up ball of foil.

WellsAndThistles · 24/01/2025 01:06

Save your money, cats will deliberately avoid playing with anything bought for them. Alternatives:-

Scrumpled up ball of tin foil. (Cheap stuff that doesn't have sharp eges)

Amazon box filled with really cheap quality tissue paper or brown paper (like giftwrap not bog roll).

Empty kitchen roll tube

Tunnocks caramel wafer wrapper (furry beast is obsessed with them)

A wooden peg

Washing basket filled with freshly line dried clothes.

If you're into sewing, the selvedge from fabric.

Faux fur pompoms (preferably attached to an expensive wooly hat)

Disclaimer - my furry ones have more toys than Pets at Home but turn their noses up and much prefer a Caramel Wafer wrapper 🙄

ScottBakula · 24/01/2025 01:13

@AnnaMagnani I have tried the scratch boxes with him and like one of yours he is not interested at all.
What tunnel do you have?
He lives hiding and leaping out at me so this may work .

@minipie ah yes I forgot about foil , my dc loves it too but the fun only last a few minutes

My cat’s favourite toy is one I made for him - a 3’ length of string, threaded through a multi-coloured paper drinking straw, with a large triple knot to stop the straw falling off. I drag it around the floor, over furniture and up and down the stairs, and he loves chasing and pouncing on his ‘snake’!

ScottBakula · 24/01/2025 01:36

@WellsAndThistles 😄, I agree with almost all of them with the exception of the boxes . My overlord thinks they are new litter trays !
He goes through phases of liking cardboard tubes he will play with the same one for a few days then won't entertain the idea of them for weeks

The most random toy but by far my car's favourite is the cat banana. Never usually bothers about catnip at all but that banana has been played with every single night since he got it about 8 months ago! Trust me it's the best cat toy ever! My cat was trying to rip open the packaging the minute it arrived Grin

Instinct1 · 24/01/2025 01:42

Hair bobbles. Pringle Lids. Plastic Straws.
Anything not an actual cat toy!

Hottoffeesauce · 24/01/2025 01:45

Yes, definitely the cat nip banana from Amazon. My cat gets a new one every year for Christmas and adores it!

ScottBakula · 24/01/2025 01:48

@maudelovesharold , that's worth giving a go thanks. He has a ball on a string which I either drag around or hang on the kitchen door handle.

@pickd 😂i now have a image of your car playing with the banana and running up and down the road with it in his bonnet (mouth)

Back to been sensible , thanks for the link that's quite a reasonable price so I could get him that.

A very accurate description of what he did 😄

Oh wait I just saw the typo 🤣 Ffs I need to go to bed and stop scrolling 😆

CrowleyKitten · 24/01/2025 04:21

mine isn't interested in catnip, EXCEPT the Yeeeow catnip toys. he loses his marbles over them.
he has a happykitty blanket, which you store in a jar with a sort of herb teabag that's a combination of other, non catnip herbs that cats enjoy. that tends to make him more relaxed and calm, and a bit playful, but in a lazier way. sometimes I put a toy in there while the blanket is in use.
he loves those little ball running tracks. he's got loads of those.
those tiny little multipack mice from pets at home. he likes to throw them about, pounce on them, even sort of juggles them between his paws.
his current favourite is boingymouse. (as we call it. it hooks over a door, and has a mouse dangling on elastic. he's so funny playing with it, does backflips, drags it across the room then chases when it pings back away. absolutely loves it. I would be careful to use it in a room where they only have access when you are there though, as I'd hate to think of an unattended cat strangling themselves in the elastic. or you can just take it off and put it elsewhere when you're going around or to bed.

BabyCatMama · 24/01/2025 05:00

All cats are a bit different. One of my cats plays with a robotic ball toy and a butterfly that goes round and round a circular base. My other cat will only play directly with me waving a trailer for him to catch or with a laser pen. You know although your cat is going to be aggressive to other cats it will only be temporary while the cats establish a hierarchy

worrisomeasset · 24/01/2025 07:05

Our cat would love it if we kept our fake Christmas tree up all year. He spends much of every festive period climbing the tree and removing the baubles.

CollaterlieSistersSister · 24/01/2025 08:03

Springs. Always the springs.

Get a job lot though, as they get bapped into every crevice imaginable.

GiftWrappedSuburbanDreams · 24/01/2025 08:03

A Kong kicker
A piece of string with a handle attached
My cat loves hitting my lip balm stick across the floor🙄
Also loves the soft tape measure
Foil balls or the foil bows you have on presents

Agree with this. Our cats mostly enjoy cardboard boxes. A scrunched up rug they can crawl under, sweet wrappers, pen tops, Kirby grip to name a few sources of amusement.

Regarding bought toys, favourites are anything which makes a crinkly noise and a toy with tracks for ping pong ball they can bat.

Millyjanice · 24/01/2025 09:02

Another big favourite is a floor to ceiling climbing bag.

Favouritefruits · 24/01/2025 09:38

i have just bought this for my two and they love batting the ball up and down the track to each other!

Large paper bag, long pieces of rolled brown paper, maybe inserted into paper bag with a foil ball. Leaves.
Small very bouncy rubber ball ( well, is currently terrified of it but was good).
Throwing balls upstairs so they bounce back down the stairs.
I spray catnip spray onto little soft toys or her cloth bag ( was used like a comfort blanket, dragged all over, when we 1st got her from rescue).

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 24/01/2025 09:48

My cat loves those kids toys that are like plastic helicopter blades that you put on a handle and pull a string to make it fly.

He loves it when we make them fly, but is equally happy flinging them around on his own and chasing after them.

He particularly likes chucking them in the bath and then skittering them around. In the middle of the night usually... Hmm

Heronatemygoldfish · 24/01/2025 10:01

Da Bird. we are on our third amazon pack of refill feathers!

Also a flashy fluffy ball that squeaks. We did not buy this. He stole it from somewhere, like Slinky Malinki.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/01/2025 10:01

Our last cat wasn't fussed about toys, with the exception of a noisy ball track thing which she absolutely loved, but our boy loves them and will entertain himself for hours. He has a wicker hamper "toybox" in the kitchen (where he sleeps overnight) and sometimes we get up to find he's had a real party. His favourite things are little stuffed mice ("his mouses") which he has loads of different ones. He throws them around and catches them, carries them about in his mouth, and is generally obsessed with them. There's a similar little stuffed fox that comes out sometimes, a few balls, and some snaky things, but the mouses are clearly top tier.

I buy packs of three mouses from Pets at Home and when we have visitors they give him a new one, but he is particularly fond of "Black Mouse" who actually belonged to MIL's cat who we looked after here long before our previous girl had him. He must be about ten years old. .

Also a shout out to anything that's part of your actual clothes that dangles. Dressing gown ties, the belt from my long wool coat, toggles on DP's hoodies etc. Very cute but not terribly convenient having a cat attached to you when you really need to get in the shower!
