Adoption has led to addiction!

We adopted our beautiful cat a couple of months ago and we couldn't love her anymore! She has settled in beautifully and already I can't imagine our lives without her in it.

Trouble is, I've become addicted to looking at rescue/rehoming pages and sites! Is this normal behaviour?! 😄

When we adopted her we were told that she wasn't keen on other cats and would prefer to be the only cat in the household. I guess that's the biggest reason preventing me from pursuing another.

Is this me now? A fully fledged cat addict?! I never thought I'd be this person. 🥹

Yes it's normal I'm afraid. So many cats out there straying or in rescue, I want to offer them all a home... but like you I have a cat who hates other cats and would never forgive me.

Please supply a photo of your cat for reference purposes.

Beamur · 30/10/2024 09:12

Ha ha.
Yes, fairly normal I think.
I have 4 cats and occasionally get a bit broody for another and browse online. Am very definitely not getting anymore though.

Phew! I'm glad to hear it's not just me. It is heartbreaking when you see the number of these lovely animals needing a good home.

I can totally understand how 1 could lead to 4 😄

It started with 2. 'They will be good company for each other'
😂

I was looking for one and adopted sisters then the cat addiction hit and I got one more! I love all three and I would have more if I could ❤️

What a pretty little cat! Big ears! I'm happy for you and for her! 😍

My friend now has 9.....

stormsandsunshine · 31/10/2024 22:38

I have to admit that I do this too. I have no actual desire to get another cat, but a weird desire to keep looking at the rescue sites and fantasise about what the cats on there would be like. I also get pleasure out of looking through all the cats, reflecting on how nice they are, and then thinking “there are lots of wonderful cats out there but somehow I have ended up adopting the best of all”

BirthdayRainbow · 31/10/2024 22:48

We went to get a cat. Came home with a brother and sister. DD wanted to adopt an older cat years later as she said no one would want her. They wouldn't let us have her so we walked away where a kitten put her paw up in the glass and DS said what about her? Obviously we took her instead. Her reserved people dropped out or failed the test. So we had three cats and a dog. Sadly, we only have two cats and a dog now.

What a beautiful cat!

JaceLancs · 01/11/2024 22:46

My highest number has been 6, most of my life I’ve had 2 cats
Current resident is a pampered one and only - he is my adored obsession and I’m not risking upsetting him by getting a frenenmy!

She’s gorgeous.

It is completely normal. I have two new rescues, they’ve been here a couple of months and I’m still on all the rescue pages. Only yesterday I was showing dh a picture of one poor lost soul and saying “Three is a good number!” But he just puts ‘the face’ on.

Dh is my only limiting factor. That role used to be filled by my old lady cat, who was firmly a sole girl and I could never upset her wishes. But now I have two friendly youngsters who were both in fosters with other cats perfectly happily; I know they’d enjoy more friends so it’s a monumental effort of restraint not to hit the ‘apply here’ buttons.

If dh dropped dead, this house would be filled with cats within a week. And guinea pigs, donkeys and any other waifs and strays that crossed my path, no doubt.

Your post made me laugh!! My DM did just that when her and my DDad divorced - she filled her life with animals of all types 😂

I love our adopted cat but can't help but feel we 'need' one more...I too get that 'look' if I so much as mention it.

The simple solution would be to stop following all the rescue pages and yet I can't quite bring myself to!

I have made my peace with the fact that the number of cats I want will always be one more than the number I actually have 😁 congratulations on your cat, she's a sweetie

BirthdayRainbow · 02/11/2024 17:11

I think @VenusClapTrap H needs to compromise. I bet he does no animal care anyway so how does it actually affect him..

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 02/11/2024 17:25

Very dangerous OP. We have a few rescues, and absolutely not getting any more. But I follow our local rescue on FB and they are constantly posting photos of gorgeous cats and kittens looking for homes, with heart-wrenching stories of how they've had no applications and are desperate for their forever home. I have to be strong. But it hurts.

Such unusual markings.

My Female House Panther only tolerates her brother because he Knows His Place , she likes sitting on the windowsill to threaten cats outside .
MaleCat is friends with NDN cat (FemaleCat is not a fan)

They have a nice status quo that I wouldn't upset so i;ll stick to Sponsering A Pen with CPL and looking at the Celia Hammond cats .

Sewaccidentprone · 02/11/2024 20:36

I would love more cats than the 2 rescues I currently have. But, dc2 age 13 hates all other cats (inc dc1). Also she’s having some teeth out next week costing £ hundreds, so couldn’t afford more than the 2 we currently have.

dc1 has a sensitive tummy and the only cat food I’ve found which doesn’t make him vom is katkins which costs £120 a month (for both of them)

TicTac80 · 03/11/2024 10:57

We went from having one cat to four. It's a dangerous thing. If I won the lottery, I'd buy a large place (with lots of land), turn it into to Fort Knox (so that cats can wander but only within the property itself, and then get more cats (or sponsor loads).

Trinity69 · 03/11/2024 11:02

I got 2 cats in January having always been a dog person but working full time wasn’t ideal for a dog. I was assured my cats wouldn’t care if I was out all day or not and that is correct. They seem to consider me an inconvenience unless I’m feeding them! I’m also still on the rescue pages I was following when I was trying to find our girls and if it wasn’t for the man in my life I’d have a few more by now, because I’m a little impulsive. My sensible head says I can’t afford to keep anymore but it hurts when you see the adorable little souls seeking a home.
