Kitten

I bought a kitten over the weekend. Thought we'd got a girl, (wanted a girl)
I told the seller I wanted a girl and she said she has a girl. Went to collect her, i didn't check sex.
Noticed when got home the poor kitten is covered in fleas and is scratching so much. I have on advice of the local vets bathed the kitten and put on flea drops (vet prescribed) vet also confirmed a little younger then we was told and also a male.
We have fallen in love with the kitten.
The seller has since messaged asking for him back as she is now aware he's a he and not a she.
I've refused and said we are keeping him. To which she shes asked for more money since she was selling the boys for more. Ive refused to pay any extra.
My husband said block her number and ignore.
Anyone dealt with this before? Are they able to take me to court etc?

Anyone is able to file a small claims but they won't because 1. It costs money and 2. They wouldn't win.

How old did the vet say the kitten was?

Sethera · 18/09/2024 22:05

She sounds appalling and shouldn't be breeding kittens if she can't look after them. Do not surrender your beautiful boy.

The vet said he's just turned 8 weeks. We were told 10. I said to the vets I'm not willing to send him back. He's staying with us. The Vet agreed and has advised us to feed him certain food for a couple weeks. (Extra nutritions etc)

This is the risk you take when buying a kitten from a person who CBA to spay or neuter and instead flogs off offspring with no care for welfare.

Fuddlefiend · 18/09/2024 22:12

Do not pay her more or return the kitten. She's obviously someone who shouldn't have kittens, she's sold you a kitten thats

  • got parasites
  • isn't the age they're supposed to be
  • isn't the sex they said

She's a shitty person who you shouldn't have bought the kitten from, but your doing the right thing by the kitten now. You would have been better off getting one from rescue as it would have been deflead, dewormed, vaccinated and neutered, you haven't had any of that so your going to have to spend money to do all that, so there's more justification for not giving her more money.

Boy cats are better anyway ;)

Pandasnacks · 18/09/2024 22:14

How did she become aware he's male after she'd sold him?

She said the one she thought was male when she checked realised that she'd mixed them up and given me the wrong one.

She sounds like a horrible backyard breeder. Way too young for a kitten to leave its mother and coming to you with parasites just shows no vet checks have been done. It’s he a particular breed or a moggie?

I would block her on all platforms.

TheShellBeach · 18/09/2024 22:29

Hi. She cannot ask for the kitten back, or charge you extra for him.
The poor boy is lucky you've bought him.

Endometriosisproblems · 18/09/2024 22:31

Sorry but she would have known! When you have a cat that has kittens you very quickly know which one is which (well we did anyway!)

He just a normal tabby cat. Ive blocked her number and reported her to the site that she was selling on

I would refuse to give back but offer an amount to take the girl cat as well

We did offer to buy her but when we refused to give him back or pay extra she said she's been sold.

I'm not a fan of many breeders but did you really not pick up on the fact that this breeder was awful when dealing with them? I dread to think what state the mum cat is in. Buying from people like this keeps awful breeders in business and you're part of the problem.

Edingril · 19/09/2024 06:32

You bought an animal? What on earth do you expect

I would hope the rspca investigates everyone

We see this a lot at the rescue I volunteer for - female cats who have been pregnant or nursing for most of their adult lives because for whatever reason they weren’t spayed. Spaying should be a legal requirement just like microchipping, except for licensed breeders who have proved they know what they’re doing.

I think you should also report this woman to her local council, OP.

Licence to sell animals as pets

A licence is required if you are selling animals as pets (or with a view to their being later resold as pets) as part of a business. This does not include selling animals in the course of an aquacultural production business authorised under Regulation...

No, but I work in animal rescue and see the consequences of bad breeders daily. Kittens with health issues dumped and the mother cats who have been made to breed until they're very damaged also dumped. But 'cute kitten' eh? You are part of the problem.

I’ve just adopted one of those mother cats, after her final batch of kittens were rehomed. I’ve never seen any cat enjoy sleeping so much, and she’s gone from being quiet & withdrawn to playing & purring. It’s so wonderful to see. While I’m WFH she’s usually curled up next to me in her bed.

Back to bed you go. Hopefully you wake up on the correct side of the bed.

You have no idea why I bought from her. I haven't said why.
Yes the kitten is very cute, thank you for saying so.
