Kitten took her cone off after being spayed today

I have a lovely little female kitten who just got spayed - she was sent home with a plastic cone but has managed to get it off twice and became quite distressed every time I’ve tried to put it on. The vet said she wasn’t thrilled either after surgery and kept hissing - a bit stressed as I have to watch her constantly and use the feather wand every time I think she is trying to lick the area.

I’ve ordered the fabric donut cone pillow thing off Amazon as think is she may not be able to get it off but it’s not arriving till tomorrow.

She hasn’t been excessively licking but has gone for it a couple of times. I literally can’t get anything on her as she yelps and scampers away. The only time she is still is if I feed her lick e lix which I might try to do when the Amazon item arrives. The plastic cone provided is useless. I can’t put socks t shirts or anything as she literally snarls at me and tries to bite when I do.
Normally she is lovely 😂

Will she be ok overnight? There’s not much more I can do and have tried everything. In your experience can it cause a danger if she is left overnight like this?

My girl didn’t have a cone on at all. I tried her in a suit but she hated it. She didn’t go for it once.

pavillion1 · 28/05/2024 21:04

our cat wouldn't wear the suit or a cone .. We gave up on the first night of trying.

Caterina99 · 28/05/2024 21:13

Another one who’s cat didn’t have any cone or anything and she was absolutely fine

oobedobe · 28/05/2024 21:23

we had our kitten done a couple of weeks ago, hated the suit, wriggled out of it the first night. We got a cone from the vet but didn't end up using it, all good now two weeks on. She was never particularly interested in the stitches though did lick it a few times briefly.

Thank you - all very helpful think I went into panic mode too soon. I’ll just keep an eye on her luckily am off work this week.

It depends how much she is trying to get at it, if she leaves it alone she's fine, if she licks at it she can bring infection to it, or if worse can open it up. Id leave it off for a bit and monitor her, if she settles let her settle on you, if she's tearing at the wound put it back on.

Yet another one who’s cat didn’t have a cone.

She’ll be fine 😊

thecatneuterer · 28/05/2024 21:32

I'm with a specialist neuter clinic. We never send cats home with cones after neutering.

Princessfluffy · 28/05/2024 21:53

Our cats (boys) wouldn't keep their cones on and did lick a bit but it was perfectly fine.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/05/2024 21:56

Can you make a suit out of an old t shirt? My cat is currently wearing a doctored baby grow!

maximist · 28/05/2024 21:59

I've had three female cats (and two male cats) neutered and none have had a cone or any other similar device. All were absolutely fine. The girls were a bit sleepy when they got home, but by the next day were right as rain and didn't seem to notice that anything had happened. They didn't bother with the stitches at all.

Thank you for all the advice - here is my little one 💖

I tired several different options when Penelope was spayed. All failed, as she is so tiny, most of them didn't fit. I gave up and she was fine without any thing on. Although when she had an eye ulcer recently, this is what I tried 😂

Fabric ones are so much better our dog just had a major op and we used it and we turned it upside down he couldn't lick it at all x

Yes, we found the fabric cones way better. You can also get ones that look a bit like a rubber ring

Thecatlady82 · 30/05/2024 08:18

Update - my kitten is doing well she wouldn’t let me put the fabric cone on either but has not been interested in her incision - just very briefly when she is cleaning herself after eating but doesn’t really touch it - so I’m hoping she will heal normally without the need for the cone. :)

None of my three had cones back in the day. Thank God! Your kitten is super cute OP but I expect she already knows this.
I love the cat with the Hufflepuff scarf very cool, I'm a Hufflepuff myself.

I thought it was a bee outfit 😀

Gorgeous!

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 30/05/2024 08:36

Lol I think you are right. I'm just watching the film series so I'm a bit obsessed at the moment. I'm 58 and I had to fast forward Dobby's death and Headwigs as I cry too much and with all the deliveries my partner orders I would upset the delivery people! Not to mention my cats who hate crying!
Bit of an overshare but I explains why I didn't see the bee outfit!

ElephantsDontReadFantasy · 30/05/2024 08:36

I made mine wear one of the onesies. It was bright red 🤣. Easier said than done if yours is non compliant though.

TheFireflies · 30/05/2024 08:38

My girl had a red onesie too. She hated it and wriggled out of it three times before we gave up. No issues healing (even with her repeatedly scaling the Christmas tree the same night she had the surgery).

user1483387154 · 30/05/2024 08:39

All react differently (brother is a vet) my cat literally was climbing trees within minutes of getting home no chance of calm time for recovery

OutOfTheHouse · 30/05/2024 09:48

You will find the incision heals really quickly. My girl was practically healed up within a week!

I would sleep with one eye open
