We picked up our new rescue cat Ella yesterday! She’s 2 years old but tiny as she had kittens when she was very young which caused her growth to be stunted 😢.

She’s a super friendly girl and has settled in with ease, but she’s confined to the spare room at the moment as we have to slowly introduce her to our other cat Jasmine, who is 12. So far Jasmine has hissed and growled a little through the door when she realised someone was in there, but I gave her plenty of affection and treats and she’s not done it again since. Will probably let them see each other through a mesh stair gate tomorrow, fingers crossed all goes well but I’ll keep you posted as I know some of you were interested in the knowing how it went.

The door is in place. Given treats to jasmine a little away where she could see Ella but not too close. A little growling but nothing too bad. She also then happily played for a bit too so clearly can’t be too stressed.

I get where you’re coming from @fieldsofbutterflies but I just feel like jasmine might get used to the fact that Ella is here and not going anywhere more quickly if she can see her. And she can’t get to hurt to injure her so don’t see what harm it can really do?

@learieonthewildmoor yes we’ve been letting Ella out for a good run around every day!

The door is brilliant. I used a cat door/baby gate with mine and it made me feel better, so totally a good idea. Being able to see the new cat is the next step in introduction. You’re doing the right thing.
Jasmine is 12, she’ll take a while. Keep posting, I am totally invested 😄

Love the door!

Toddlerteaplease · 11/06/2024 21:59

I tried a toddler gate. But he just jumped over it, and there isn't anywhere to properly fit it because of the design of the house.

learieonthewildmoor · 11/06/2024 22:56

@ Toddlerteaplease: Paddington is both smarter and a better jumper than Cat Three. Cat Three was confounded by doors when we first got him.(It opens!!) The baby gate had him stumped.

Try Feliway, it really helped my cats to get on

Little update for those who are interested! So we’ve slowly started letting them be in the same space again after first letting them get used to seeing each other through the mesh door. Jasmine is still being pretty grumpy and hostile, she’s swiped at Ella a couple of times but nothing worse than that, and I think the fact they’re sitting this close and both relaxed is pretty good progress!

That seems like good progress! I've been following your thread, and so I'm really glad to hear that things are getting better, OP.

Missing the point of your thread entirely...what is the name of the green paint on your wall? It's lovely!

Haha, if I remember rightly I think it’s Little Greene pearl colour mid

That's great progress. We are doing better as well. But it's bloody stressful!

learieonthewildmoor · 20/06/2024 12:17

Oh that’s very good, Melon!
Ella is filling out, looking sleek and grown up.

It really is stressful isn’t it, I feel like it’s having a huge impact on our whole family, never expected it to be this hard!

jasmine is still doing a lot of hissing and bopping but I’m kind of just letting it happen (under supervision only of course) and it doesn’t seem to be progressing into full on fighting I think because Ella is so passive bless her, she just backs off every time Jasmine goes for her.

@Melon2312 I didn't either. All
My other introductions were easy. cheddar and Magic got on from the moment they met. No isolating needed. And Cheddar was far more agressive to Penelope than Paddington is. And that was easier.

Melon2312 · 05/07/2024 19:50

Caught the two of them lying on the bed together earlier!! 5 minutes later Jasmine was hissing and swiping at Ella again but I feel like she’s doing it with less enthusiasm now! 😂

Wow! That's brilliant. We are getting there very slowly as well.

learieonthewildmoor · 05/07/2024 21:02

Wonderful!

We are at the same stage.
