Maine Coon biting

I have an almost 2year old male MC who I absolutely adore. However if he’s been grooming himself or decides he is about to start grooming he always bites me if I go to stroke him. In fairness he usually gives me a warning “chirp” first so I know to keep away. I was interested to find out if anyone else’s cat does this or if it’s just his quirk. He weighs almost 10kg so if he bites me it’s very painful!!! Picture for cat tax

We also have a 2 year old male Maine Coon who is very large. With me he is incredibly gentle, never bitten, paws are always with claws in. With DH he does occasionally bite and does use claws at times when he pokes DH, like he is play fighting.

Ours would just trill if you went to stroke him whilst grooming, he's permanently in a good mood, will even trill if you wake him up by stroking. Loves attention.

CherrySocks · 09/04/2024 21:09

No but ours are female, also I tend not to stroke them if they are busy, I let them come to me when they want attention.

Most of the time he’s a baby and rolls on his back to have his tum stroked. I wondered if it might be his way of enforcing his dominance, not that he has to do that, I know who’s boss. It’s only me at home with him and no other pets. I guess it’s just how he is. Thanks for the info.

Maybe he hates the jumper

shockthemonkey · 09/04/2024 21:11

He is gorgeous!

Yeah that will be it lol. When it’s -3 he’s quite happy to have it on.

Mine bites my nose.

Not seriously - he definitely isn't trying to hurt.

I don't know why he does it.

Yes that what he does chirps or trills, I think that’s my warning and if you’re not fast enough getting your hand away he will bite.

That’s what I’ve been doing. I wait till I’m invited before I pet him.

It maybe he can't manage two things at once. Ours if you stroke him whilst he is grooming he trills but he stops grooming and looks confused. Though he is easily confused. Your cat is gorgeous.

My Mainecoon is bitey but choosy who he bites. He lets my friends 3yr old play with him. He loves me and dd, ds he play fights quite viciously. If he's in a mood because he's pissy as he's waiting for food he will take a swipe at anyone walking past.

He does actually attack me if I've been on holiday and left him with dc for a few days! He gets quite vengeful. I pick him up and chuck him outside when he gets like that and then he's okay.

Thank you for the info that sounds more like my boy. He’s still young and probably being a stroppy teen. He only bites me and is very chilled with my friends.

He’s stunning 🤩🤩

I have a half Maine Coon/half Ragdoll. Got him from rescue 3 months ago. He's a big placid sweetheart but tends to scratch and bite a bit in play when he is petted! Trying to train him out of it. He's nearly 2 as well.

They can be a handful for sure! Mine is so protective over me, follows me everywhere and never leaves my side if we have someone new visiting. He does groom himself a lot so he has a fabulous coat ….every cloud.

Mine (female) will sometimes, when lying in my chest, spend quite a bit of time cleaning my fingers. After a while she will then bite me most delicately to tell me that it's my turn to scratch her head. Repeat several times.

Just tried it and he stopped grooming, looked at me like I can't do two things at once, started purring then he rolled onto his side and started bouncing his tail still purring and blinking at me.

He also decided to play with a baby Bel wax thing which he was sure was a cat toy, and got it on his paw then just kept it in mid air until it fell off. Not the most intelligent of cats.

Probably feeling a bit overestimulated in the moment

Or he doesn't want you messing up his fur

Penguinsa · 10/04/2024 00:26

Floof doesn't like his fur messed up. I threw some roast chicken with gravy at him once which went on his fluff under his chin and he was quite traumatised by gravy on his fluff and refused to eat the chicken as he needed to look beautiful again first.

RockingAmadeus · 10/04/2024 04:52

@Penguinsa what a beautiful boy. I think that’s probably it. If unbeknown to me he's just finished grooming and I stroke him, then I’m messing up his hard work.
