Advice needed for situation with poorly cat

I need some advice please. So we have a kitten still but he isn't well. We've been to the vets countless times. He's on prescription food, he's been on 4 rounds of antibiotics and he's not getting better. I've tried a few vets and they all say he might just always be ill as a complication of the virus. I want to take him to the vets again. But my husband wants to give him up to a cat charity so he can be looked after and possibly re homed. I'm not sure and think we should try to get him better. Its cost me a fortune in treatment so far.

The lady we got him from lied about everything. She said he was a she. She said he was flea treated but he was riddled with fleas. (I took him.straight to the vets and he was flea treated and wormed and vaccinated) She said any cat food was fine but he had diarrhea from the day we got him. After weeks of messaging her it turns out she was feeding him a raw food diet. He was only 4 months old and he got campylobacter ( like salmonella) vets reckon this is the cause of his illness.

He doesn't have campylobacter now as we got this treated but the constant diarrheah is an ongoing complication and he's not putting on weight even though I feed him 4 times a day. Kids are devastated because he said we need to give him up. I'm quite upset but part of me agrees with him and the other says we should carry on looking after him.

The other problem is that the vet refuses to do his vaccinations again or neuter him until he is better. But then also said he might never be better. But won't advise what we should do! I've tried all 3 vets in our area and they say the same. He can't have top up vaccinations as he has the diarrheah and so now he would need them re started but again can't because he's ill.

So now I don't know what to do as he is very much loved! But I feel awful that he's not getting better and looks like there isn't anything we can do about it either. The vets kind of given up!

☺️ that’s literally a first.

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 01/01/2024 15:46

Yes!! I'm so happy. I will give it a couple of weeks as long as he continues. Then I will get him vaccinated again etc. Hopefully this is the start of things being easier for him. Dh is happy too now. Think he was just in a grump.

Men often do the whole “the cat is going” thing while we do the 👆🏻the cat is not going thing.

The whole aim of marriage is making them feel in charge while being in charge.

It’s a life skill.

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 01/01/2024 16:10

Agree with that! Been married 16 years. In the end I get what I want 🤣

Excellent news!

How do you pronounce ipek? I originally read it like you would iPad but wonder if its more like the 'i' in imagine or even maybe a 'y' ?

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 01/01/2024 16:49

Thank you. I is like 'ih' I can think.of an example without it being a turkish or arabic word🙈🤣 like I in 'in' is the best example lol.

But yes every vet we have seen has called him eye peck. Bit late to change it now as he recognises his name 🤣

Has he been tested for feline coronavirus?? Common in pedigrees, can cause chronic diarrhoea. Especially if breeder is a bit lax...

Thank you @ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs but looks like it was tapeworm. Good to know though! Thank you

That's what I wondered, but hope it isnt, our Moggy had it, I think he picked it up (possibly along with FIV which probably made him more prone to it, even though we vaccinated him the vet said he could have been exposed to FIV before we got him)

On looking back at a photo of him when we viewed him, his poor claws were caked in dirt. Should have walked away. Also claimed he'd been flead but I combed a fuck tonne out of him with a nit comb when we got him home

Had to call his "breeder" for her name for the insurance claim we made - she's lucky she spoke to OH as she went and offered another kitten! I'd seen pictures of them (funnily AC was only produced because her cat got out during lockdown when waiting to be spade - why then was one of this new batch of kittens an exact replica of AC, a year later...)

Hopefully it isn't and great news OP he's had a much better poop - love how he joins you for prayer time! I'd still keep him on his current diet until you've had a few days of consistent poop

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 01/01/2024 19:07

Thank you @MadCatLady27 yes. He's still having some diarrheah and a couple of normal poos. Definitley better than before. Not planning on changing food for a while

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 01/01/2024 19:09

Definitely not as swollen.

Definitely not as swollen.

That sounds positive.

Shameless picture of my girl’s tummy for comparison.

I feel very invested in this wee boy cat. He's adorable. Hoping you're on the good pathway now 😍

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 01/01/2024 23:23

We are still having diarrheah. I'm hoping it eventually stops completely

Very watery diarrheah this morning. Thought we had cracked it! Will try the stronger probiotics.

Oh little love. When are you next in the vets? This isn’t right.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 02/01/2024 08:58

I was hoping it was getting better too but he’s very young and campy does knock you about. I had it when I was young and it took me ages to get over it

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 02/01/2024 09:43

Thank you. Need to take stool samples and drop them off. But I'm going to wait until the panacur course is over. I just put a spot on dronc it solution on him too. As I I read panacur doesn't help against all tapeworms. So thought better safe than sorry. Another 3 days of panacur then I will start taking stool samples.

OP posts:
Poorlycatadvicewanted · 02/01/2024 09:43

He's still happy and bright though!

OP posts:
margotrose · 02/01/2024 11:59

If he's on Panacur why are you using a spot-on treatment as well?
