Advice needed for situation with poorly cat

I need some advice please. So we have a kitten still but he isn't well. We've been to the vets countless times. He's on prescription food, he's been on 4 rounds of antibiotics and he's not getting better. I've tried a few vets and they all say he might just always be ill as a complication of the virus. I want to take him to the vets again. But my husband wants to give him up to a cat charity so he can be looked after and possibly re homed. I'm not sure and think we should try to get him better. Its cost me a fortune in treatment so far.

The lady we got him from lied about everything. She said he was a she. She said he was flea treated but he was riddled with fleas. (I took him.straight to the vets and he was flea treated and wormed and vaccinated) She said any cat food was fine but he had diarrhea from the day we got him. After weeks of messaging her it turns out she was feeding him a raw food diet. He was only 4 months old and he got campylobacter ( like salmonella) vets reckon this is the cause of his illness.

He doesn't have campylobacter now as we got this treated but the constant diarrheah is an ongoing complication and he's not putting on weight even though I feed him 4 times a day. Kids are devastated because he said we need to give him up. I'm quite upset but part of me agrees with him and the other says we should carry on looking after him.

The other problem is that the vet refuses to do his vaccinations again or neuter him until he is better. But then also said he might never be better. But won't advise what we should do! I've tried all 3 vets in our area and they say the same. He can't have top up vaccinations as he has the diarrheah and so now he would need them re started but again can't because he's ill.

So now I don't know what to do as he is very much loved! But I feel awful that he's not getting better and looks like there isn't anything we can do about it either. The vets kind of given up!

Ah, he looks so happy!
And that fat little tummy!!

ILoveNigelTufnel · 10/03/2024 08:13

Bless him! He’s living his best life now - upstairs and beds to investigate. That little tubby tummy too ☺️

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 10/03/2024 09:57

Thanks all. So does he just look chubby to you? Rather than bloated?

He's slowed down on the food last couple of days. Instead of 3 pouches he's happy with 2. Which I assume Is probably better all round.

He's still happy and he tried knocking over some photo frames today.

He does look a bit bloated to me still. If I compare him to all the similar aged kittens I have, they've never had that kind of belly. My kitten is 9 months for comparison and this was taken yesterday.

But mine is just a farm moggy and yours is a breed that's known to be round and stocky so I could be completely off.

Yes, he does, but if it went down after he toileted then I assume it was much flatter afterwards?

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 10/03/2024 12:11

@lifebeginsaftercoffee oooo OK thank you. Your kitten is beautiful!

Oh I didn't know mine was a stocky type! Thank you.

@StBrides yes quite a bit flatter. Not completely. But it wasn't stiff iykwim. It could be squished and wasn't as round. Before he was like a balloon at its fullest.

Ah thank you - don't be fooled by those innocent eyes though, he's a terror Grin

Can you get a photo of what he's like now he's done a poo?

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 10/03/2024 12:32

I'm trying to find him! He's disappeared somewhere in the house. Will hunt for him

Found him! He was asleep on a dining chair tucked in.

Hi guys! Hope you are all well! Ipek has been fine and no more diarrheah! One more question though. Today he has suddenly licked every inch if his fur. He's never done it as much as this before. Is this normal? He looks like he has been washed and is at the tial end of drying off. Is it because he is molting? I check and no skin irritation and no fleas etc.

Just wandering if it's normal and he wasn't cleaning enough when he was poorly or if it's because he's molting or I should be worried about something else now!

Thank you

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 15/03/2024 15:53

I wouldn't worry! It could be because he's moulting, or it could just be because he's finally feeling normal and is making up for lost time :)

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 15/03/2024 15:57

Ahhhhh OK. Thank you. I thought so but double guessing myself!

This is what I mean by his fur.... but I'm assuming as he's just chased me around the room and grabbed my leg by both paws. He's probably OK 🤣

He scaled my back last night and was trying to play with my hair bun. He's turned into a puppy!

If he's otherwise fine I'd assume it's because he's feeling much better :)

Overgrooming can be a sign of stress but there's nothing to indicate he's over grooming so I wouldn't worry.

I love it when they're menaces!

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 15/03/2024 16:43

If he's moulting I'd also keep an eye out for hairballs Grin

Mine likes to do them on the carpet by the stairs door, so I tread in them first thing in the morning or on the way to the toilet at 3am, lol.

MadeOfAllWork · 15/03/2024 17:15

Good to hear his diarrhoea seems to have cleared up. If he’s eating and playing I wouldn’t worry too much.

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 15/03/2024 18:06

Tha k you everyone. I shall happily go back to being target practice then 😅

Good for him he must feel so much better.

StBrides · 21/03/2024 19:49

Was wondering how we was doing!

Cat tax due please 🫴

ILoveNigelTufnel · 21/03/2024 22:25

Yay for Ipek! Lovely news you hear he’s doing so well. What a relief for you all!!

GettingStuffed · 21/03/2024 22:31

This sounds like DDs cat. She tried feliway and he's stopped pooing everywhere and he also does proper poos rather than the runs

Poorlycatadvicewanted · 22/03/2024 04:50

I didn't see replies! Thank you! And cat tax 😁
