Naming cats

We've had our current two cats for a number of years, they are littermate brothers. We have tried a number of names over the years but none have "stuck" so they've been referred to by their colours, Ginger and Tabby. However we have just rehomed a six month kitten who is also ginger, so that's not going to work any more. I was considering the matter over the weekend and as I dozed off to sleep the names Mike, Pete and Dave came to me and I thought, "Yes, ordinary bloke names, perfect!"

I mentioned this to DS1 who laughed and asked, "Who's Pete?" I replied that they were just random names and he pointed out that actually the other two names belong to my brothers in law! (In my defence, they use the full versions.) So back to the drawing board, but my brain is just farting. Any ideas?

Bertie, Bobbie and Robbie

Caspianberg · 13/12/2023 16:43

Cats can recognise their names though if you use two symbol but different sounds from each name

Ie Robert, Bobbie, Alfred. As cat hears the last sound basically ie ert, ie, ed

I would keep the two older cats names as they are, they'll know them and it's hard to swap to new names after a few years. I would probably name the kitten 'Cinnamon' or another spice based name as that would go well with Ginger. 🙂

Your cat already has a name. Once you bond with her you will know it.

My last, beloved, late cat clearly did not relish the name I initially gave her. I observed her, talked to her, petted her - as much as she would allow!! And this is important...

And I found her name. 18 happy years, and no other name would have fitted her.

Meetsy RIP

Many thanks to all of you, I shall let the suggestions percolate through my brain and see what pops up in the small hours. My cats really don't know their names!

The first two are actually registered at the vet with Star Wars names. First grandchild responsible for that!

It has just occurred to me that Bob and Bert are the same name. Gah!

That could work though! Rob, Bob & Bert 😬

That made me laugh, you've included the names of my late cat, my late uncle, my son and a brother in law! 😂 And I can't pronounce Carl, I'm Scottish.

I have a ginger and a tabby. The ginger was thoughtfully named by his rescuers “Flynn” which means “son of the redhaired”. I love his name, I think it sounds majestic, as is he!

The tabby came from a rescue where they just followed the alphabet for each new rescue. He got I… his name is Ian 🙈. We thought it was terrible and trialled “Errol” (to go with Flynn) but it had stuck and Ian he was. Reader, never have I ever had so many compliments. The vet said he had the best name he’d ever seen on a cat!
Ian himself is absolute chaos and a complete nutter as well as the most affectionate cat I’ve ever met. He now also has a cat cousin called Keith!

We had cats called Suki, sicky and sucky. Also Affy, faffy and Taffy.

And one named cat.

My suggestion is Thing One, Thing Two and Thing.

Riapia · 13/12/2023 18:26

Ambrose.
Finest name for a cat. 🐈

Theoldwrinkley · 13/12/2023 18:36

We have just got a kitten. He is a Maine Coon and thought we'd call him 'Max' (Maximillian) as all our other cats (rescue moggies) have had classical/emperor/God names. But it just doesn't suit him. So we've changed it for vet records, but at home he is 'LP' (little puss) to change to 'large puss' in time. My suggestion for your cats are mayhem, chaos and havoc.

Gettingbysomehow · 13/12/2023 18:38

I have always wanted a ginger cat called Dave because ginger csts are such wide boys.

VeryQuaintIrene · 13/12/2023 18:53

We currently have a Max, and it suits him very well.

RockSocks · 13/12/2023 19:40

We couldn't settle on a name for our most recent cat, decided it would be funny to use a word for when you have forgotten the name of something
He's called Whatsamajigger, What for short
Makes for fun conversations when people ask his name you say What and they repeat the question 🤣

My husband and a nephew are Ian... 😁 I like Flynn though.

Did the new rescue not have a name?

I'm out of practice at cat naming, the last eight of mine (four current) have all been either rescues or fosters and had names already!
