Lost cat has been found... Help?!

This is quite outing as many IRL people know this story, so name changed.

In spring for 2013, our cat went missing. She was only 2, was out in the garden when we left for the school run, came home and she never returned. I spent months trying to find her, my children then aged 10, 7 and 5 were devasted. My youngest cried herself to sleep every night for a month, my eldest would search our estate after school, we went anywhere there was a potential sighting, but found nothing. We had another cat who was incredibly bonded to the one that went missing. We still have that cat now, but could never replace the cat that went missing, instead we now have a house rabbit who is bonded to the cat we have. He is now 12 as we had them both as kittens, but from different litters.

Imagine my surprise yesterday when i got a call, that nearly 10 years later, my cat has been found! From what i can gather she was taken in as a stray by an older lady, who can no longer care for her, or the other cats she had, they were taken in by a charity, who had the cats scanned, which flagged my details as her microchip was still registered to me.

My children are over the moon, my now 15 year old daughter is beside herself and cannot wait to go and collect the cat - who is around 30 miles. But im worried, im worried for her coming into a home again if shes been a stray and bonded to other cats, im worried for my cat we have still, who has spent 10 years in a house without another cat, im worried how the missing cat will respond to the house rabbit and vice versa.

But i cant just not try. I gather from the charity that the cat is unwell, some kind of renal failure possibly, and that is something im willing to take on, and my children all understand that she may not have a whole lot of time left, but if she can live out her final days back in a home with people who love her and care for her, then thats what we will do.

But how do i go about reintroducing her, in a way that is going to be the least stressful for her, for my other cat, and the rabbit?

Any advice would be very gratefully received. Thank you

So pleased for your daughter too - she must have been over the moon when the cat went straight to her.

Wonderful story and brings me hope that my missing boy might just reappear one day.

Hey all, just thought id do a quick update.

She is doing really well, had her at the vets and theres no signs of renal failure or issues at all. She has had some tummy issues, but ive had her on a special gastro food and it seems to be resolving now too, otherwise she is in perfect health!

My other cat still wont tolerate her next to him - unless they are being fed, but otherwise just ignores her, very minimal hissing and growling. She is still unsure of the house rabbit, she back off if he approaches her.

But all is well, she is happy, and affectionate, she dislikes being on her own wants to be sat on someone constantly, and has no concept of personal space, she will plant herself on your shoulder if she isnt getting the attention she wants lol. But the 3 seem like they can live harmoniously together, and hopefully, its for many years to come

MrsQTip · 28/12/2023 21:41

@returnofthecat23 what a beautiful girl and you can see the ageing from the photos, so cute ❤️this is an incredible story, I am so happy for you all but why didn’t the person that took her in try and trace her at the time.

Blueberrycreampie · 28/12/2023 22:41

I didn't see your story before but I am so pleased kitty has found her way home again to her family!

Cakeorchocolate · 29/12/2023 15:44

How lovely, obviously not the 10 years missing. So very rare to hear of a cat being found after so long.
Hopefully the cats and the rabbit will all come together and co-habit happily once they're all used to each other.

I have 2 cats from the same litter, 13 years old now but came to live with us as kittens. One turns into a viscous little thing to her sister when scared. When we moved into our current house she was so horrible we had to keep them apart and the victim cat slept in a wardrobe (her choice). They spent 2 weeks with 1 living upstairs and the other downstairs.

When they've been to the vets, she hisses and spits at her poor sister. They always go back to being normal within a few days and are usually found curled up together. So hopefully yours settle in to being close.

I hope for another future update saying as much.
