Lost cat has been found... Help?!

This is quite outing as many IRL people know this story, so name changed.

In spring for 2013, our cat went missing. She was only 2, was out in the garden when we left for the school run, came home and she never returned. I spent months trying to find her, my children then aged 10, 7 and 5 were devasted. My youngest cried herself to sleep every night for a month, my eldest would search our estate after school, we went anywhere there was a potential sighting, but found nothing. We had another cat who was incredibly bonded to the one that went missing. We still have that cat now, but could never replace the cat that went missing, instead we now have a house rabbit who is bonded to the cat we have. He is now 12 as we had them both as kittens, but from different litters.

Imagine my surprise yesterday when i got a call, that nearly 10 years later, my cat has been found! From what i can gather she was taken in as a stray by an older lady, who can no longer care for her, or the other cats she had, they were taken in by a charity, who had the cats scanned, which flagged my details as her microchip was still registered to me.

My children are over the moon, my now 15 year old daughter is beside herself and cannot wait to go and collect the cat - who is around 30 miles. But im worried, im worried for her coming into a home again if shes been a stray and bonded to other cats, im worried for my cat we have still, who has spent 10 years in a house without another cat, im worried how the missing cat will respond to the house rabbit and vice versa.

But i cant just not try. I gather from the charity that the cat is unwell, some kind of renal failure possibly, and that is something im willing to take on, and my children all understand that she may not have a whole lot of time left, but if she can live out her final days back in a home with people who love her and care for her, then thats what we will do.

But how do i go about reintroducing her, in a way that is going to be the least stressful for her, for my other cat, and the rabbit?

Any advice would be very gratefully received. Thank you

Marking my place for the photos

I bet her "rescuer" was a cat hoarder🤬

I'm so glad you have got her back (or will very soon).

Still getting her sunday, but ive had some more pics i can now share. The left ones are from 10 years ago, i have very few pics of her as they were saved on a harddrive that failed, so i only have whats on social media, but the ones on the right are what the person caring for her has sent, and they are so similar to what i have, i had to share!

What a pretty girl she is!

LoreleiG · 15/12/2023 18:11

Oh she is scrummy!

My cat returned after 3.5 years. I am glad she has been looked after all this time and hope she has a happy retirement with you. I am sure your other animals will adjust with a bit of time. I have two oldies who met each together aged about ten and they get on fine and rub noses with each other to say Hello.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 15/12/2023 18:31

Wow, you all must be so excited. I really hope it all works out and your cat settles back in well.

CatChant · 15/12/2023 18:37

Such a pretty face.

Hope she is home with you soon.

LittleMissSleepyUK · 16/12/2023 19:28

She’s beautiful. I bet you can’t wait to get her home

returnofthecat23 · 17/12/2023 15:12

She's back home <3 she went straight to my daughter and sat with her until we had to leave the house, the woman caring for her was so so lovely and sad to see her go, she has been very much loved these past few weeks. My other cat is currently sulking, he hisses a bit when she goes near him. Separating them didn't seem fair, he is used to free roaming, and she needs love affection and attention. So while we are here we are letting her free roam, but will separate them at night. She has had a good mooch about the house (as we moved since she went missing its all new) and is now having a snooze on my knee. Almost like she never left <3

This is so lovely.

Waitingfordoggo · 17/12/2023 15:52

What an amazing story! One of ours went missing for a month or so earlier this year and then reappeared having lost lots of weight and incredibly nervous 😔 He’s settled back in again now, is gaining weight and has his old confidence back. I thought a month was a long time but ten years is incredible! Enjoy all the cuddles.

TheCatReallyDidComeBack · 17/12/2023 16:35

I'm so pleased for you @returnofthecat23. She definitely looks like she's settling nicely. Ours hid under the bed for weeks! She's a fair bit older though. I hope you have many more happy years with your long lost cat.

UmaniCaroline · 17/12/2023 16:48

That's a lovely story. She's beautiful. I'm sure your other cat will get over his sulks!

TastyLikeARaindrop · 17/12/2023 17:19

Aww look at her paws 😍. Awful that you were parted for so long but it sounds as though she's been well cared for. Having a mooch around the house is a great start and I hope her settling in continues to go well.
