Adopting a Persian

First post so bear with.

Our beautiful old lady cat died earlier this year at the ripe old age of 20 and the past month I’ve been craving a new cat but wanted ideally to rescue.

There is a one year old male Persian at our local rescue centre who I’m a bit taken with. Husband doesn’t really get it (he’s a bit quirky looking) but I think he’s adorable.

I haven’t owned a Persian before, I’ve had a long haired cat though and am used to grooming etc. But what else should I be aware of? I want to inform myself as much as possible before making a commitment.

He is quite flat faced and reminds me of Gizmo 😂

Sending out the bat cat alert for @Toddlerteaplease.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/08/2023 18:24

Omg!!! If you don't have him
I will! My long haired Persian died three weeks ago.
They are THE most wonderful breed of cats. Affectionate, gentle, can't tell you how wonderful they are. Not very bright though. 🤣

Grooming isn't an issue as long as you keep on top of it. I used a metal comb and a tangle teaser on my girls. They'd get a brush a couple of times a week. And a professional groom every three months or so. Keep trousers and bum very short.

They can't go out into the big wide world. But an escape proof garden is fine. My two liked a potter round the garden, but weren't bothered if they went out or not.

Does he have a heart murmur? If she does, get the rescue to have him
Scanned, heart disease is common in Persians and expensive!

The rescue I got mine from, said I'd never have another breed of cars again. And they were right!

They absolutely are not like moggies though. Don't expect him to be overly dynamic. Having said that, my 12 year old exotic has turned into a kitten again.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/08/2023 18:28

You will spend your life defending any grumpy expression, because they really are not.

I think that may be my new favourite photo of Cheddar

Oh thank you for coming back to me. What beautiful cats! I’m so sorry to hear you’ve lost a little friend too, they really do get under our skin don’t they!

The heart murmur is a great call to get checked and one I hadn’t thought of. I did ask if he had any breathing issues and they said none. He’s been spayed and vaccinated and had a slight ear infection on arrival at the rescue which is currently being treated. He also has a little bit of tartar on his teeth as he was on a wet diet only before and theyve introduced dry food which should help resolve it.

He was very affectionate with me and even let me brush him and pick him up. I have children so want to bring them to meet him too as he needs to be happy around children as they adored our old cat and will want cuddles.

All of mine have been lap cats, though my friend has one that's not. Get very good insurance, for indoor cats, my two long haired ones, were nothing but trouble! Completely random problems as well. Some breed related do
E not. But this little one doesn't look to flat faced.

Thank you, isn’t he sweet? He’s more grey in real life and very cuddly.

Im still a bit broken about our old moggy. We had discussed a dog but I’m just missing my cat cuddles so much.

Do it! I promise you won't regret it. It really will help heal your heart. Where is he based? So I can steal him!

My dearly beloved half Persian (but managed to grab the 80% fluffy-ness ) died aged 24 .. she was the absolute love of my life despite 2 x DH , 3 dcs and 5 sdc.. )

Do it x

GeraldTheGoodMouse · 28/08/2023 20:07

Awww. Just beware that they don't always conform to type, the only Persian I've had was a roughty toughty outdoorsy hunty cat. She used to come home covered in prickly twigs and all sorts from her adventures which was not fun to brush out!

mostlydrinkstea · 28/08/2023 20:13

My half Persian got all the floofs but not the flat face. She was a really good hunter.

I'm amazed, the ones I know are not actually clever enough to actually catch anything. But having had a long haired cat before, at least the OP is familiar with degardening a cat.

Lemonademoney · 28/08/2023 20:15

My first impression of this one is that he is sweet and docile - I don’t get the impression there’s huge amounts going on upstairs but I may be wrong 😂

Clearly inherited the brains from the non Persian half 🤣

mulesrules · 28/08/2023 20:41

Oh he's adorable, no advice other then get him! 😆😻

Toddlerteaplease · 28/08/2023 22:22

Do you have a side profile pic? I just want to see out of nosiness how flat his face is.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/08/2023 09:31

I hope you are singing those forms OP. 🤣

Toddlerteaplease · 29/08/2023 09:36

If you don't have him. I'm
Seriously interested! If he's within a 3 hour drive of me!

Lemonademoney · 29/08/2023 14:13

I’ve reserved him and am taking my children to meet him on Sunday. I don’t feel rushed which is good so it’s a case of let’s see how he and the kids get on 🤞

He is in Leicestershire, if that’s local and we end up passing I shall DM you details x

Ooh and I’ve emailed about heart murmur and any bite issues, thanks for the tip. Hoping it’s all reassuring when they get back to me. Quite excited now (husband still meh but he did this last time then adored our old cat and was devastated when she finally
left us so I’m optimistic)
