Realistically speaking... how much does your cat really eat?

So my darling two year old cat can scarf down 4 wet food pouches a day and stay as trim as ever.

My not so cat lover mother quoted I'm overfeeding her.

If i reduce her food she will protect with wails, batting of my face and a thousand mile stare with such power I feel she's in my mind!

Three pouches and some cat biscuits (in theory)
But it takes a steel will. Occasionally one of us will cave and he gets a 4th one.
If we fed him on demand, he would eat 6!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 15/08/2023 20:09

Mine get 2 sachets of wet food a day and an unlimited amount of dry food. They are both huge mutant monster cats.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 15/08/2023 20:10

Not fat, I should have said. Just huge. The type that get photographed and mistaken for escaped zoo animals.

Twattergy · 15/08/2023 20:12

Small cat - she has 2 scoops of biccies a day. One pouch a week as a treat. 3 or 4 pouches a day sounds a lot to me. But then my kitty is not big and she does catch mice/birds a fair bit so may well be supplementing a lot for all I know.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 15/08/2023 20:17

One pouch a day and a scoop of crunchies. But she's morbidly obese on that tiny amount. I don't know how she does it. She weighs 6.5kg.

ItsNotRocketSalad · 15/08/2023 20:17

One cat can be in perfect body condition at 4kg and another at 5.5kg, so talking about amounts doesn't make sense. If you can feel her ribs without applying pressure and she has a 'waist' from above, she's not being overfed.

Caffeinatedhuman · 15/08/2023 20:18

@BruceAndNosh she would have more if I gave in, too! However I'm not made of money so 4 will suffice 😆

@MrTiddlesTheCat my girl is very muscular and 3x the size of her parents so I can understand mutant monster cats 🤣

@Twattergy the only thing my girl manages to catch are grasshoppers... and those are for me to eat apparently lol.
I wish she only ate that much a day!

1 wet pouch split breakfast & dinner and I scoop of biscuits before bed

Supplemented by plentiful mice 🤨

Both cats around 4kg

Caffeinatedhuman · 15/08/2023 20:21

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername I feel her pain. One look at a biscuit and I swear it goes to my hips 🤣.

@ItsNotRocketSalad that's true. I think my mother is basing her feeding off of her old cat... only ate one pouch and plenty of dry food. He was a big cay though. My girl is perfectly trim.

Kittens are 2kg and get 2 wet pouches each per day and 24hr access to a bowl of dry food.
Tbh they don't always finish the second pouches.

ItsNotRocketSalad · 15/08/2023 20:23

Tell your mum kibble is much more calorie dense than wet food so you're not feeding yours more!

verdantverdure · 15/08/2023 20:54

How can it be over feeding if your cat is happy and healthy?!

Tell your mother to keep her diet culture programming out of your cats life maybe?

I mean, don't really, but come on!

Why does she want your cat to be hungry and sad?

verdantverdure · 15/08/2023 20:57

Ours have dry food down all the time and four meals a day.

If they wanted more they could have more. I have hungrier days when I've been more active why wouldn't they?

RosaBaby2 · 15/08/2023 21:05

My male cats have a full tin each a day and biscuits. I could never feed them those piddly little pouches if need a box every 2 days! Neither is fat but they are big cats. Can't believe some only have one pouch a day. I wish 😂

AnotherDelphinium · 15/08/2023 21:07

Both of mine have 110g of raw food a day…
One doesn’t always finish it, the other eats everything within 30s, and has apparently, for the last month, managed to convince the neighbours she’s a starving stray and they’ve been feeding her kibble too.

They’ve fed her so much, she’s put on loads of weight and they wondered if she was pregnant. So whatever you do, please don’t feed cats that aren’t yours 🤦‍♀️

But you’re OP, cats used to be quite good at regulating. The problem is the commercial cat food has to be full of goodies and scents to make them eat it because otherwise it’s so appalling, they have become a lot less good at actually regulating, which is why we now have to for them!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 15/08/2023 21:28

4.5kg ragdoll, seems quite skinny to me, can definitely feel her spine but vet suggested she was borderline overweight🤯 She really isn’t! She is a very long cat.

She is a fussy fucker, one small tin in 2 x halves and another half overnight normally plus dry food available all the time and the odd lick e lix which she loves. She hates dreamies.

Tiespin · 15/08/2023 21:52

4 sachets of Felix every day. He's slim

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 15/08/2023 21:54

1 pouch each a day and unlimited biscuits. Neither are overweight or skinny.

Barblarble · 15/08/2023 21:54

Ours are a big breed and healthy at 8kg each according to the vet. They get a tin each per day and unlimited dry food (we get through about 800g dry a week between them). We were advised that it's hard to give them all the nutrients they need on just wet food so mixed dry and wet is better, though frankly I can't imagine how much it would cost to do wet food alone, I think they'd need 6+ tins a day each to get the same calories!

LucyGru · 15/08/2023 21:56

Mine has one pouch of wet food and 2 tablespoons (baking measure) of kibble a day - and she's really fat! I don't understand why she is, reading all these answers.

lljkk · 15/08/2023 21:57

I dunno because > half their calories is wild caught. There is an endless supply of voles, apparently.

Purpleavocado · 15/08/2023 21:58

Big boy cat, about 5kg, he's slim but the vet said not to let him get bigger
One sachet - half in the morning, half about 4pm and about as much dry food as he wants - in average about a mug-full

ThinWomansBrain · 15/08/2023 23:39

Female cat 3.5kg - I try to keep to around 200g of wet food daily - she has kibble that she rarely touches, occasional dreamies, and likes to try my food, occasionally I'll feed her chicken if I've cooked some, but mostly the odd teaspoon of prawns or taster of bacon.
Occasionally she has cat milk - if I open one it lasts about 4 days, although she'd probably drink the lot if I gave it to her.

I mostly buy her food online from zooplus - so a large can lasts 2 days. Whenever I look at pouches in a supermarket, they vary hugely in size; I used to assume they were all 100g, but quite a few are only 70g.

I'm guessing you're not her only home 😜
