Cats in summer

Our cat is a wanderer so spends a lot of time outside anyway but since the sun has come out, she only turns up to eat and immediately goes back out again. She was out for over 15 hours one day and we were panicking that something had happened to her.

Is that normal? I have no idea where she goes or what she's up to.

She's probably found somewhere cool to sleep all day, that's what mine tends to do, luckily it's under a bush in the dirt in our garden, so she's not far.

Clarich007 · 12/06/2023 09:48

Our cat is the same. He's a wandered but we barely see him for days this weather

CurlewKate · 12/06/2023 09:55

Perfectly normal-and one of the joys of cats! What do they do and where do they go? Well, I know where one of mine goes. A particular branch 15 feet up my neighbours's apple tree.

MissisBoote · 12/06/2023 09:57

My boy cat is exactly the same. No sign of him all day until about 8pm when he turns up for food then disappears off again. My girl cat always stays close to home whatever the weather.

kirinm · 12/06/2023 10:02

I assumed as it was hotter, she'd stay in more but nope.

I'm pleased to hear it's normal. We did wonder if she'd found new people she prefers!

Mine loves sleeping out in the garden for some reason in this weather she’s always on the trampoline asleep

Polis · 12/06/2023 10:10

Ours always slept outside under a big plant in the garden when we were abroad in a hot country. When we brought him back to the UK it was Christmas and cold so he slept indoors for the first time, under the Christmas tree.

Star0Fire · 12/06/2023 10:24

I was wondering the same, our girl spends every minute outside during the day In this weather. She's a black cat so I was a bit worried about her overheating

Tdcp · 12/06/2023 10:35

One of mine just doesn't come in when it's hot out. He never strays from the garden but he even sits on the step outside the open french doors and miaows until we feed him outside 😂. He sleeps under the bushes / trees and chases flies all day. The other one is grateful for being a bit cooler indoors now but she used to be the same when she was younger.

Tdcp · 12/06/2023 10:36

I should add, he is a ragdoll cross, very very fluffy and black... just make sure plenty of water is available and they'll be fine.

Ihatesponges · 12/06/2023 10:38

Ours is the same and will often come back at 3am, meow with urgency and wake everyone up.

In Winter months he will often come in at 6pm and sleep through until 7am.

In the summer if he is indoors all night he meows at 4am. But last night I hung two heavy blankets over the curtains to make it darker and we woke up before the cat did!

caringcarer · 12/06/2023 10:52

My two can go in and out the cat flap as they please. They seem to sunbathe in the garden, most often when I go out with a coffee mid morning. They also snooze indoors where it's warm but a bit cooler than outside. I've noticed my boy cat lies in the shade under some trees and my girl cat lies on the seat under the arbour. They've never gone far. The dogs stay in more but also have access to the garden via flap. They too tend to go when DH is working in the garden or I'm having coffee put there. They like us to throw a chew toy for them to fetch.

CalpolOnToast · 12/06/2023 10:57

Haven't seen one of mine since teatime yesterday, although he may have been in in the night. He's usually absolutely fine but I do worry. Yesterday he came in with a snail on his arse! Other one is laying about the garden.

Mimiandruby · 12/06/2023 11:03

I think your cat will be fine, they'll have found a nice cool place to sleep. I know my cats will find the coolest place in the house to sit in, they're really good at it. I've been known to budge mine off their cool spot so I can enjoy it for a bit, the cats don't like it when I do that though.

CalpolOnToast · 12/06/2023 13:11

My dirty stopout was in when DH got home for lunch🐈‍⬛

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 14/06/2023 00:11

Cats will find a shady spot and take advantage of the ground being cool to spread out and cool off.

Dcat will lounge on my lawn if the washing's out giving shade.

Iliketulips · 14/06/2023 21:21

Our old boy used to disappear for 48 hours, had me worried sick. I found out he'd go and sleep in the chap's green house opposite (as if it wasn't warm enough). The poor chap couldn't shut the door at night!

YoSof · 14/06/2023 22:13

Currently sat waiting for my cat to come in, she’s staying out later and later at the moment - usually in for 9.30pm, last night was 11.15pm just as I’d settled on the sofa and was panicking that she would never come back. We don’t have a cat flap so I have to leave the back door ajar.

Praying she comes back before midnight tonight, I’m so tired! Think I’ll have to start keeping her in at night - she comes back to eat and goes back out around 6pm usually so I’ll have to shut her in then 😞

YoSof · 14/06/2023 22:13

On the sofa to sleep*

CalamityCara · 14/06/2023 22:16

Mine is now staying out all night so spending most of the day either asleep in her bed or lazing under one of the shrubs in the back garden.
She usually sleeps on me at night so I’m really missing her.

littlbrowndog · 14/06/2023 22:16

Worried about mine. Not seen him since lasts night. He just came home squeaking 🤣🤣

Stripytee · 14/06/2023 22:31

Mine will disappear for days on end in weather like this. They can come and go as they please through the cat flap so I just fill the food up and I can see the they come into eat but i don’t know when! Have no idea where they go either… I do miss them in the summer.

Clingfilm · 14/06/2023 22:40

Yes mine's the same, treats the place like a hotel, absolutely no idea where she's going, turns up at 2am, goes back out. She sleeps indoors for hours and hours in winter.

littlbrowndog · 14/06/2023 22:41

Oh good to know. I was worried about him. He has just departed again had some food and a drink

Rollonannualeave · 14/06/2023 22:44

Ours is the same. She's been out way more in summer. I was wondering if someone was feeding her too. But it seems she just likes the weather.
