Cats in summer

Our cat is a wanderer so spends a lot of time outside anyway but since the sun has come out, she only turns up to eat and immediately goes back out again. She was out for over 15 hours one day and we were panicking that something had happened to her.

Is that normal? I have no idea where she goes or what she's up to.

What the heck do they do all day when they are out

JoanOgden · 14/06/2023 22:51

Mine likes to go out late at night to state menacingly at the other local cats and sometimes yowl a bit. But she's always back on my bed asleep when I wake up in the morning.

My wanderer has just returned!

Mine used to hide under the leaves of the rhubarb - like a parasol. Befuddled Maine Coon in 40° heat in summer.

Yes mine sods off on urgent business which appears to be sleeping in sun, fighting, killing things, sleeping and then comes home when the sun goes down. That's after a winter of being a virtual glue stick

Mine used to sleep in a very thick hedge where it was cool. Or under the neighbours trampoline
He looked disgusted when the neighbours told on him Grin

Currently sat waiting for my cat to come in, she’s staying out later and later at the moment - usually in for 9.30pm, last night was 11.15pm just as I’d settled on the sofa and was panicking that she would never come back. We don’t have a cat flap so I have to leave the back door ajar.

Praying she comes back before midnight tonight, I’m so tired! Think I’ll have to start keeping her in at night - she comes back to eat and goes back out around 6pm usually so I’ll have to shut her in then 😞

Mine does that too in warm weather so I only giver her half a dinner. She comes back for the other half at around 9pm, then I don't let her back out again.

Am not going to worry anymore about him. I think 🥶

Yes, normal:) often they find a cool shrub to lie under and its actually must cooler under one than anywhere else.

This is a good plan!

We hardly saw ours last summer and they seemed to be living on fresh air (food bowls untouched), so it was difficult not to worry. I have no idea where they go, but it surely can’t be cooler than the cellar they can access freely. Cats are just weirdos!

kirinm · 15/06/2023 08:03

Ours has started to come back more often now. Still not sleeping inside or staying around very long but I'm not too worried now!

My wanderer has a tracker on and he has gone from doing 2km a day to 4km a day.

He's an Arabian Mau so thinks the weather is awesome and has sunbathing spots all round the village.

The black moggy isn't so keen, she has taken to flopping.
