Is my Maine Coon fat?

Hey!

My (not so) little Ollie is 7 months old (100% Maine Coon) and his vet today told me he is too heavy for his age and to restrict food. He is 5.1kg.

He doesn't seem overly round and he is still growing and very active... I've always been told not to restrict the food of kittens.

He currently has 4 tins of Cool Cat Club Deluxe formula a day and he nibbles on Thrive dry, but isn't overly interested.

So as not to drip feed, he had surgery to correct bilateral ectopic ureters exactly 3 weeks ago and had two weeks of cage rest that ended last Tuesday.
His check up today was in relation to that.

He's currently in the box of shame :D

Can't say from his weight, but can you feel his ribs through the fluff? Harder to assess weight with fluffy moggies!

My old puss was a 3kg cat as an adult and all fluff with no cat underneath.

What weight were his adult parents?

I wouldn't want to restrict food in a 7 month old cat either - personally I would carry on as you are and see what happens as he gets older and even longer!

cuckyplunt · 30/05/2023 17:05

You should be just able to feel his spine ridges. Beautiful boy btw, love a Maine Coon, they grow until they are 4yo.

Silkierabbit · 30/05/2023 17:06

I don't think that's overweight for a MC - its right in the middle of the male 7 month ones. We have a male one who is one and 8kgs. He says he's not fat.

Silkierabbit · 30/05/2023 17:09

Ours has 1 big 156g tin of Applaws Tuna (at that age 70g kitten Applaws) and then unlimited Royal Canin MC dry food.

BabyStopCryin · 30/05/2023 17:09

I think we need more photos. Just to check.

Littleroseseverywhere · 30/05/2023 17:10

You can’t really see his body so hard to tell

Indoorcatmum · 30/05/2023 17:12

Thanks everyone!

I can feel his spine (but not as clearly as with his moggy brothers).

I googled Maine Coon weights too, and it does seem to be average! I feel like he will even out as he goes, but will definitely keep an eye.

I am very reluctant to restrict his food sp wanted to get some opinions :)

His dad was 25 pounds at 5 years old, so he probably has some growing left to do!

This has shown me I take terrible photos and need to take loads more, more often before he grows up too much 😹

I have no useful advice but just posted to say I'm very envious of your beautiful cat and your beautiful view 🤩😍

BabyStopCryin · 31/05/2023 12:43

I love these cats. Very ‘where the wild things are’ vibes!

AllGussiedUp · 31/05/2023 12:50

The vet will have been able to feel him to know he’s carrying a bit too much fat presumably? That’s better than anyone on the internet can do. Unless your vet is rubbish in which case find another one.

fguuh · 31/05/2023 13:50

Some vets aren't used to bigger breeds so it's quite common to be told to restrict food when it's not necessary.

My BSH's are around 7kg, thankfully never been told they need to those weight.

Ollie is gorgeous

007DoubleOSeven · 31/05/2023 13:55

No, he is not fat, he's beautiful.

I have two 7 month old MC kittens! They are both boys and they weigh 5.3kg and 5.4kg. Their breeder said they grow fast and not to restrict their diet in the first year. So I think your boy sounds like he’s totally fine, vets often don’t have experience of MCs and just go by the weight for an average cat without realising how big MCs get. If his daddy was big he probably will be too, some are weighing it at 7kg or more at this age! He’s gorgeous btw - they are such lovely cats.

Thank you so much for your reply and I totally agree! I've seen a lot of vets this past month in regards to his surgery and the specialist said that he was gorgeous and didn't mention his weight... So I'm going to keep an eye on him, but not restrict!

He's currently running at top speed through the house after a fly that got through the window, so he is doing some exercise haha

Your two sound lovely <3

@fguuh Awww, thank you! And BSH are adorable. Lucky you!!!

@007DoubleOSeven hehe thank you. They are lovely to look at, but require some serious muscle and engineering to open. You have to lift at just the right spot :D

@Wapping123 Ah, that is brilliantly helpful! Thank you!!! It sounds like he is pretty average then for his age/breed. They are such unusual cats, I am enjoying the new experiences :)
Their little chirps are so funny! Although I've found he needs much more playing and stimulation than my other two (moggies) did. He is very inquisitive and high energy. Are your two the same?

I was expecting a very placid cat, but his kitten stage has been full on!!!

Me too!
I’ve had four cats and never restricted food intake whilst they were kittens
he looks normal to me especially for a Maine Coon. He’s gorgeous
