Is my Maine Coon fat?

Hey!

My (not so) little Ollie is 7 months old (100% Maine Coon) and his vet today told me he is too heavy for his age and to restrict food. He is 5.1kg.

He doesn't seem overly round and he is still growing and very active... I've always been told not to restrict the food of kittens.

He currently has 4 tins of Cool Cat Club Deluxe formula a day and he nibbles on Thrive dry, but isn't overly interested.

So as not to drip feed, he had surgery to correct bilateral ectopic ureters exactly 3 weeks ago and had two weeks of cage rest that ended last Tuesday.
His check up today was in relation to that.

He's currently in the box of shame :D

He looks so much like my boy. Mine is 18 months, 7.5 kg, and refuses to believe he no longer fits

Some vets aren't used to bigger breeds so it's quite common to be told to restrict food when it's not necessary.

My BSH's are around 7kg, thankfully never been told they need to those weight.

Ollie is gorgeous

I’ve got BSH girls. This is my youngest she’s three and weighs 7kg
our vet has the breed herself so the lucky admires her chunkiness 😂

Totally agree! I got two because I thought they’d entertain each other - they much prefer pestering me to play with them, cuddle them, talk to them etc! They are definitely full on but such gorgeous boys, they are really loving and the chirps and trills really crease me up, they are such big cats but they’re warbling away!! I’ve found the springs, cat straws and those window beds that stick on to glass to be a life saver - mine really like chilling out warbling to the birds in the garden.

That photo of him trying to fit in the cat tree makes my heart hurt, it is SO CUUUUTE

I used to have Maine Coons and they mature late. The boy was huge and at maturity was 8kg of silver tabby loveliness. His sister was nearer to 5kg.

One of my current clowder is part Bengal. Every year the vet tells me she is overweight. She could lose .5kg to be fair but she is never going to be the 3.5kg that the vet thinks that all cats should be.

Enjoy your MC. Does he fetch balls of paper? That was my cats favourite game as well as terrifying small dogs who hadn't seen anything feline in XXL size before.

My Ollie loves springs too! I have about 20 under my fridge at any given time.

I have the window beds too, but I haven't got any cat straws! I'll have a look and get some because he is chewing all sorts at the moment.

I was writing a birthday card earlier and he grabbed the top of the pen lol.

Your two are just dreamy! Such lovely photos! You've inspired me to start taking more :)

Maine Coons really are so special and different!

shame on your vet for fat shaming your cat! He is gorgeous and most definitely does not need to lose weight. I now really want a maine coon…

I have a 5 kilo birman and my vet loves his chonkiness. Cats can get away with it.

Your past fur babies sound wonderful! I bet they were treasures :)

Bengals are so majestic and athletic, it makes sense that she will weigh more.

I know our vets want us to have healthy cats, but all breeds don't fit into the same box!

Ollie loves to play fetch with his little plastic springs. He's my first cat that has played fetch with me and I didn't have to teach him (he taught me) 😂

He also sits on the cat tree looking out onto the road and soaks up all the compliments from people walking past. It's giving him a big head!

Ooooh, Birmans are the best! I was so torn between them or a MC!

And thank you, he agrees that he is very gorgeous hehe

What gorgeous cats everyone has!

Allergictoironing · 31/05/2023 18:44

I was booking my (ex-feral) moggy in for his MoT and there was a new vet nurse there. I mentioned he's around 6kg and she sounded shocked and said he sounds very overweight.

She was much more shocked when I went in and a very long, tall, lean panther was eventually persuaded out of his carry cage, with nary an ounce of fat on him. He was just tall and long, and built like a Siamese/Burmese but near enough double the size of DBro's Burmese.

weirdthigh · 31/05/2023 18:57

I think they can be around 11kg fully grown. I don't think you need to worry tbh

Silkierabbit · 31/05/2023 21:48

Floof at 7 months on bed, similar weight and our vet was fine with it and now at 1 year 3 months. His Dad was huge 11kgs and Floof is already 1 metre 12 long.

Judging from the photos he is not overweight. I really think your vet was wrong. You can palpate (feel) the rib cage and feel the ribs below a thinnish layer of fat and from above there should be a 'waist' just in front of the rump. He looks great by the way. He is a dilute ginger tabby. He has the 'dilution gene'. Nearly all ginger tabbies are males.

evtheria · 28/06/2023 10:07

Ugh everyone's cats are so beautiful and smooshy 🥰
