Urgent - kitten crying 🐈

I have a new kitten, 10 weeks, the plan was to keep him in a large pen overnight with his bed, blanket, toys etc but he just cries and cries! I feel so bad so I've brought him upstairs to sleep with me but he's just running around, knocking things over etc! What do I do?? 🙀

Cats/kittens shouldn't be penned, hence the crying. Sure he will settle after some playtime!

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 02/04/2023 22:32

The pitfall of getting just 1 imo.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 02/04/2023 22:32

If I were you, I'd let him stay. He'll conk out eventually. He's very little to be left alone, and sleepy kitten cuddles are the best thing in the world.

littlbrowndog · 02/04/2023 22:32

He will settle once he’s wrecked your room 🤣

BIWI · 02/04/2023 22:33

Cats should never be kept in a pen! Who told you that?

They need to feel safe. He needs cuddles.

QueenoftheNimbleFlyingCat · 02/04/2023 22:33

Oh OP, kittens don't like being penned - after a little playtime and getting used to the new environment they will settle down and come and purr on you, you lucky thing .

littlbrowndog · 02/04/2023 22:33

Yeah he just wants to be with you. Lucky

ThisIsMyHappyFacee · 02/04/2023 22:34

Ok thank you, I'm just worried he'll get lost or into mischief while I'm asleep! He's so very affectionate, he'd sleep on my face if I let him! I don't even know where he is now 😅 I'll persevere and hope he settles 😁

A kitten in a pen, when was this a thing?

he’s young and afraid. If you don’t want him running wild get in the pen with him

bellswithwhistles · 02/04/2023 22:39

Christ, he's a baby! Let him stay with you. It's hard work having a kitten, akin to a newborn to be fair!

I've got 2 cats. Mine have to be separated at night or else they fight so the girl stays with me upstairs. She gets into bed and cuddles me all night. Absolutely blissful. We let our boy upstairs about 6am but he's good as gold overnight downstairs. Neither have ever been penned though.

bellswithwhistles · 02/04/2023 22:40

ps. if not already, your house needs to be 'kitten proofed' (like toddler proofing) You need to remove anything that could be a danger to him.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 02/04/2023 22:42

It was never going to work but I love your optimism.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 02/04/2023 22:47

Most places suggest rehoming kittens in pairs for precisely this reason - company and someone to play with so you're not used a racetrack at 4am Grin

As PP have said, you can't shut them away in pens - they need space to explore, things to climb and spaces to hide away in.

We had a solo kitten once (never again!) and we had to keep her in with us after we'd kitten-proofed the entire house.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/04/2023 11:58

I don't think we can give advice without a picture of the said kitten.

He is adorable!

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 03/04/2023 19:16

He’s absolutely beautiful. Moms special baby.

Our last kitten was a Bengal, if I’d had two my house would’ve been a pile of matchsticks.

Velseb · 03/09/2024 17:00

Oh... This is my exact situation right now AND my cat looks identical to yours. Also likes being on my shoulder too. It's like I'm seeing my exact situation!! All these people saying "just don't pen them" do not understand... Mine won't let me sleep. Keeps attacking me (playing), insisting on sleeping against my neck or on my head, keeps kneading my face and trying to kiss/bite my nose and ears- I don't understand.

They're kittens, and that's what kittens do. You need to play with them just before bed time until they are so tired they just fall asleep eventually. Remember that they are used to being in a bunch of other hyperactive babies then suddenly instead of 4 or 5 playmates you are all they have to play with.

They need plenty of stimulation, attention, play time - they can be more tiring than a toddler, and as a pp said that's one of the reasons why most rescues only rehome in pairs, so they have a playmate.

Still, only about another 10 months or so before they get out of the "kitten" stage! I'm going to gently suggest that maybe you should have researched kittens/cats a little more before falling for the adorable cuteness, especially when you bear in mind that the cuteness only lasts about a year and you then have up to another 18 years or so of demanding overlord 😼

Allergictoironing · 03/09/2024 21:49

Looking at your pic again, are you SURE your kitten is 10 weeks old OP? The eyes still look blue in that picture, and they should have changed by now. If he's younger than you thought, it would explain even more why he's so desperate for attention!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 03/09/2024 22:18

Hi @Allergictoironing - zombie kitten alert. This was posted 18 months ago.

Allergictoironing · 04/09/2024 06:39

Oops - currently brain damaged due to a lingering cold combined with stresses at work!

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 04/09/2024 06:56

Be nice to have an 18 months old update on this 😻

forgotmyusername1 · 04/09/2024 06:59

@Velseb

We have two 15 week old kittens

We shut them in their downstairs kitten room at bedtime (the room set up for them when we bought them home)

Cats are nocturnal. A crate won't be big enough and he will be awake a lot of the time so you are his playmate

Is it too late to get him a friend?

I'm the OP, here is Cookie now aged 19 months 🍪😻
