How frequently does your DCat throw up?

StuntPigeon · 06/03/2023 20:15

Dcat (13) is currently in a period where she is sick roughly every other day over about a week to ten days. No other symptoms. This happens every few months.
Off to the vet we go, sometimes she gets an anti sickness jab and a special diet for a few days. She's an indoor cat with HCM so sleeps alot of the time and only eats what I give her.
Is this fairly typical, I mean, sometimes you get children who are bit 'sicky' so I'm wondering whether this is just a thing that happens to some animals that they're prone to being sickly.

My old tom cat has always been barfy. He has good & bad spells. It's probably a chronic blockage in his tum. Yowls frantically for food, eats a bit & pukes a lot a moment later. Doesn't do it again for between 8 hours & 8 weeks. Been like this for 10+ years !

My current young cats: nothing, never

BeforetheFlood · 06/03/2023 20:29

I recently heard that using those bowls that are raised up a bit and tilted can help prevent them scoffing and bringing everything up again. Haven't tried them with our (scoff-and-sick) cat yet, but think it might be worth a go!

Toddlerteaplease · 06/03/2023 22:25

Cheddar was daily till I changed her diet. Then she would have 24 hours every month or so, where she would puke a few times the stop. She's been vomiting much more recently but is well in herself. And eating and drinking. Holding off a bit longer before having bloods done as she's so well. My late Cat with HCM never vomited.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/03/2023 22:26

A tilted bowl really helped Cheddar.

WarningToTheCurious · 06/03/2023 22:39

Mine does a couple of times a week - she’ll want out to the garden to eat grass and then throw up, or sometimes it just happens (3am is a popular time).

I’ll try the raised / tilted bowl to see if that helps - she has the Royal Canin oral biscuits that are supposed to be crunched but these do seem to come back up whole when she barfs.

Bloody cats.

Yarnosaura · 06/03/2023 22:48

Current cat, maybe once a year.

Last cat, probably once a week.

Hellocatshome · 06/03/2023 22:51

I have 3 cats I probably clean up cat sick at least once a day for 4 or 5 days a week. They are all regularly checked at the vets and they are perfectly fit and healthy. It's a combination of hair balls, eating too quickly, stealing the dogs food and licking any pots and pans that aren't washed straight away.

ZeldaB · 06/03/2023 22:54

Has she been tested for hyperthyroidism? That was the problem with mine. Now they only puke if they haven’t eaten their meds

justasking111 · 06/03/2023 22:59

Have a feral cat that wandered into our garden heavily pregnant found her eating frozen carrot from the freezer I had thrown out onto the lawn when cleaning out the chest freezer. She eventually became domesticated sort of. BUT she can't regulate her eating so we have to feed little and often otherwise it comes back up.

Whatdayisitalexa · 07/03/2023 13:38

Mine tends to if she's constipated, she's indoor now so I can see what she's producing in her litter tray these days.

emotionalsupperhuman · 07/03/2023 13:39

Mine hasn't ever. She's a house cat. I'm not sure if I just got lucky or she's not eating things she shouldn't be outside

catmania · 07/03/2023 14:42

One of my girls would be frequently sick after eating so i got raised and angled bowls and hey presto, hardly ever sick now.

Isheabastard · 07/03/2023 15:25

My cat used to do this every time I slipped up and bought a cheap brand of dry biscuits.

I fed him some wet and some dry. Usually buying better quality dry biscuits solved the problem.

hilariousnamehere · 07/03/2023 15:28

One of mine fairly regularly, not always hairballs - she's 10, otherwise healthy and vet said it's part and parcel of having a cat / a fluffy cat. I'd love to try tilted bowls but have spent the last year getting them both to use the microchip feeders due to having different diets now!

MamOfFive · 07/03/2023 15:37

I have 3 the eldest two are sick maybe once every 6 months or so usually because of them malting and licking their fur. The youngest who is 3 never been sick.

mathanxiety · 07/03/2023 15:42

Dcat barfs about 2-3 times a year.

Furballs are more frequent - she's a very fluffy breed.

She's an indoor cat and eats anything that moves, spiders, the odd fly, ants in summer, as well as cat food both wet and dry.

My previous cat was allergic to preservatives and had to have quite an expensive diet of special food.

Lenax · 07/03/2023 15:43

Our 11 old cat who we rescued at 10 in December 2021 started throwing up weekly at first then daily by June. After a lot of chasing the vets we eventually got an ultrasound and found lymphoma. I'm not saying this what your cat has at all, but do chase the vets and push to get to the bottom of it, we were told to try various things such as hairball biscuits, Hills I/D, hairball paste, dry only and then wet only, raised bowls etc. Chronic vomiting has a lot of causes

Changingmynameyetagain · 07/03/2023 16:49

My furball throws up at least once a month.
Its either she eaten too fast or a hairball and sometimes it’s grass.
We try and feed her slowly over the course of an hour, she has pouches but she’s fussy about the brands and turns her nose up if we change.

whirlyhead · 09/03/2023 21:01

I have an angry Scottish bulimic cat who eats like a pig then throws it up 30 minutes later so every day. We no longer have carpets. He’s been like this all his life and is 9 so I no longer worry. Little furry bastard will probably live to be 20 just to annoy me.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 10/03/2023 07:42

Dcat rarely vomits but did so this morning on our brand new rug🤪🤣 Thankfully it’s so new it’s still upside down being flattened so she vomited on the underside.

I think she just overate. I got up early and she was desperate for breakfast but had already eaten her dried food.

Welshgirl10 · 10/03/2023 07:48

My cat went from never being sick to being sick daily, and sadly he had cancer of the stomach and we lost him 💔

I'm sure the vet will have checked for any lumps but if not it may be worth pushing for it.

Exasperatednow · 10/03/2023 07:49

What do you feed your dcat? Changing their diet made a difference to ours.

StuntPigeon · 10/03/2023 12:15

I'd love to see a photo of an angry Scottish cat @whirlyhead !
Vet checked again. Did bloods and all fine have booked ultrasound of her heart to review dx of HCM in case her meds need changes.

She also has some Mirtazepine for the nausea and to kick start her appetite snd that's worked well.

Male cat once vomited up on our bedroom carpet (thankfully the old carpet) i thought he'd had a massive pooh ( well more than one) and How COULD you was tempered with that's so not like him

But it was regurgitated dinner . A one off thankfullly and no idea why .

Female cat has a liking for chucking up frothy grass , usually in my DS room .He mutters about "frothy spit" and gets a tissue .
No furballs (yet)

One angry Scottish cat photo attached!

he’s a big fan of Scottish independence and Nicola sturgeon so is currently permanently furious. Not helped by the fact he lives in England and has an Italian name.

he hates us all.
