NEW Whiskas - the one with the Cod flavour

crosspusscrossstitcher · 26/01/2023 13:06

is going to cost more.

For a 3kg cat it is now recommended you feed them 3 or 3.5 pouches per day. Old recipe was 2.

Calorie content has reduced from 77 to 62 per pouch.

There is also NOTHING ON THE BOX TO SAY THIS IS A NEW RECIPE

Please spread the word outside of here.

I won't be buying any more of this s$£t, and will never buy another MARS product.

🤬🤬 on behalf of my 2 hangry cats.

Do you have to buy Whiskas? Will they eat better quality food?
High meat content fills them up more and will cost less in the long run.

Whiskas and Felix are the junk food of the cat world. The ingredients list will show you that.

However, I am lucky this time round and have one that will eat anything so am making the most of it and getting better quality food. No added sugar, no grain, no gravy or cereal/corn/maize/ soya.

crosspusscrossstitcher · 26/01/2023 13:31

@CatAssTrophic suggest something, please! I can't buy that crap any longer.
They can't have dry stuff - tried Royal Canin - it makes BoyCat barf.

Oh, and price isn't an issue.
I'll happily spend more on them than me!

From shops - Blink, Lily's Kitchen. There are others but I buy online, if you find something you like the look of don't be bamboozled by what it says on the pack. Look at the ingredients list, meat should be at the top and min 85%. Look for grain free and no added sugar. Jelly is better than gravy due to what is in the gravy, but I avoid both unless it is from meat (and says so).

Online I order from Zooplus. Animonda Carny, Feringa, Smilla, Thrive, Macs, Taste of the Wild, there are lots to wade through and often at better prices than others. Set aside half a day and read them all. Most of them are pate and very solid. Feringa is a bit lighter and contains vegetables.

For a break and chunks, Miamor, Almo Daily. There are other Almo types but do check carefully in the description of all of them (especially Applaws and similar) that they are not complementary of supplementary as these do not contain the nutrients they need.

CatAssTrophic · 26/01/2023 14:05

Also, there is a thread here that you could wade through, I would suggest not starting the beginning as it is old, the recent stuff is more helpful. There are also random food threads in various parts of the cat forums, plus it's a friendly place for cat people.

If you’re interested in a raw diet I recommend PurrForm. My girl’s digestive system loves it!

CatAssTrophic · 26/01/2023 14:07

Don't worry so much about calorie content, weight is more important, feed by grams. There are guides on the packs for weight of cat and amount to feed.

Let me know how you get on (if you want to).

I was going to suggest raw, but my constipated cat went from being OK on the Zooplus stuff to being bunged up on the raw, also had to remember to take it out of the freezer.

IClaudine · 26/01/2023 14:11

Although cheap, Butcher's Classic is good as it is grain free. I fed my little dictator Animonda Carny for the first couple of years of her life, but then she went off it. This was the only one she would eat apart from Whiskas, but I don't like giving her that for the reasons above. She is now 12 and in good health. I never give her dry food as it makes her throw up a lot.

CatAssTrophic · 26/01/2023 14:14

Butchers is also better than Whiskas, if they will eat it, not marvellous but easy to get hold of.

I forgot to mention Bozita, comes in tetrapacks, chunks in jelly or gravy and more like the Whiskas crap to start them off with. In general the German stuff is best but Bozita is Swedish I think. Not as good as the others but acceptable. Smells a bit odd.

crosspusscrossstitcher · 26/01/2023 14:17

@IClaudine that's what BoyCat was doing, especially in the warmer months when he was shedding fur like a machine. 🤦‍♀️

He's a sensitive little soul, so I don't want to bung him up, or go the other way.

I'll take a look at @CatAssTrophic suggestions.

I'll report back, but they've a fair amount of old recipe whiskas to eat first - which is good, as I can introduce new food slowly and gently. I do not want to upset his system Shock not after last time. 😱

Rebel2023 · 26/01/2023 14:21

Mine loves natures menu. It's never upset his tummy, and he reliably eats it (fussy, scrawny old boy who throws up for fun)

crosspusscrossstitcher · 26/01/2023 14:21

@CatAssTrophic I forgot to say - both of them will eat my food. Tuna, prawns, roast chicken...also toast crumbs and danish pastries.
They probably could be coaxed into having an expensive taste in anything...😻

My cats have always hated whiskers. They refuse to eat it.

They like Felix, but only certain flavours 🙄

Most of the high meat content foods that I've bought on zoo plus they refuse to touch. I dread to think how much money I've wasted.

CatAssTrophic · 26/01/2023 14:36

I hope they do have expensive tastes in everything, one of mine would try things but could never be persuaded to change completely. He did get weaned off the dry that he was on when I adopted him but it was a struggle to stop the Whiskas completely. He would eat Applaws until I found out it didn't contain the nutrients he needed so reduced it to treats only. He would have a taste of sausage, a bit of raw meat, but only ever a little bit, he just wanted to know what it was.

I don't feed dry, it is too high in carbs and contains too much grain/potato and other stuff that can't aren't designed to eat. Also is often the subject or recalls due to contamination.

MidnightMeltdown · 26/01/2023 14:36

Spoilt little brats. I'm getting a half starved stray next time who will be more grateful for their food! 😂

CatAssTrophic · 26/01/2023 14:43

@MidnightMeltdown did you try Bozita, not as bad as Whiskas or Felix and looks similar?

The problem with the crap foods is the enhancers that are added to make it more appealing, they have to add stuff to disguise the grain (fillers).

@Rebel2023 I stopped buying Natures Menu when they stopped the pouches. It used to be meaty and moist, smelled good and lots of flavours, including game. Now it is in tins, needs hacking out with something that won't bend or break and resembled moulded cardboard mixed with plaster. It stinks too, and not in a good way. Hate to think which bits of animal are in it. My cat wasn't keen, ate it but, not mad about it.

Scrumbles isn't too bad BTW, available in shops.
Garden Centre pet concessions also have some good stuff, Canagan is one.

I did that, it worked this time. I have a rotund little porker who arrived with a football where her belly should be. Rescue had fed her the same as the bigger cats, and lots of dry as well. I have her on a diet, and lucky she is a gentle soul or she would have my arm off and get stuck in without any qualms.

Last couple, not so much. In fact one of them was more picky than any pampered puss once she had settled in.

BlueKaftan · 26/01/2023 15:12

When the raw food bungs her up I mix it with Fancy Feast. 😁

Rebel2023 · 26/01/2023 15:13

@CatAssTrophic and put the prices up...

Some days mine will eat the tins and not the pouches and then vice versa Hmm
I've found a supplier of the pouches for now (mine has the kitten range for extra calories) and they stock them at £8 per box so I'm slowly buying them all!

You must be joking Grin
Mine spent 5 YEARS living in a broken greenhouse and now yells at me if I forget his joint supplement on his food. I have to "season" it by sprinkling it on or he follows me around the house shouting at me and won't eat Confused
He will also eat tuna, but not tuna cat food

MidnightMeltdown · 26/01/2023 15:15

@CatAssTrophic

I don't think I've tried that one but I'm willing to give it a go!

They had HiLife as kittens, but don't like the adult version 🙄

They've also turned their fluffy little noses up at Lilly's kitchen, Feringa, James Wellbeloved, Smilla, Animonda, Sheba, most gourmet perle (except some tins in a particular flavour), Mjamjam, Harringtons, taste of the wild, and probably countless others that I've forgotten about!!

I have a pantry full of cat food waiting to make it's way to a cat rescue (unfortunately I don't drive)!

They do like Applaws in the fish flavours, but I don't think that's a complete cat food. The tins are tiny and it doesn't keep them full.

crosspusscrossstitcher · 26/01/2023 15:17

@CatAssTrophic OK. I've done some reading. <argh>
Just tell me where to start (again).
They can't have dry - BC will eat it all in one sitting then be sick and GC has really stinky poo.
They're both a bit tubby - mostly due to my nocturnal peri or menopausal get-up-at-3am-and-stay-up, feed-the-cats habit - which is only for 5 or 6 days per month, so not constant thankfully 🤦‍♀️

OP posts:
crosspusscrossstitcher · 26/01/2023 15:21

One thing I have noticed -

If it smells "wrong" going in...you need a hasmat suit when it comes out. 🤢

Unless it's just my 2.

OP posts:
crosspusscrossstitcher · 26/01/2023 15:26

@CatAssTrophic What I meant - not in a particularly articulate way - was "Please tell me which 3 for me to start them with?"
🙏🏻
They like fish, of every kind - Girlcat will happily hook prawns out of the colander when I rinse them, even if they're under 4" of water.🤦‍♀️ she'd love a pond
They'll eat my roast chicken but never chicken flavour food.
