Cat missing for 24 hours and I’m devastated.

I don’t want to make this too long, will try to keep short.
Shes an older cat at least 14 years old, wee bit frail.
She has only lived with us for almost a year (used to be relatives cat) in different area.
She is very much a house cat and only ever wanted out at night for 5-10 minutes.

Longest she’s ever stayed out is 30 mins.
She went out last night at 11pm and hasn’t been seen or heard of since and I’m going out of my mind with worry, it’s so so unlike her. She’s such a lap cat and enjoys nothing more than sleeping on the couch.
I’m just saying this as I’ve always had cats and know they can sometimes wander for days but this is not like her at all. Never been out for more than 30 mins and suddenly she’s gone 24 hours.

I’m so worried. We’ve posted all over Facebook and I drove checking all the roads today just in case. Checked every sort of ‘neighbourhood/awareness/cats’ page I can, no reports of a cat being bit or injured.

Ive put her litter tray, food bowl and a box with a throw from the couch in it. Been out all day and night looking and calling for her.

I don’t know what else to do and I’m absolutely beside myself with worry. I don’t really know why I’m posting this except for the fact I can’t focus my mind on anything else.😥

P.s sorry I failed at keeping it short.

Aw hope you find her soon. My neighbours cat went missing for a week and just walked back in. Fingers crossed she will be ok.

Thesonglastslonger · 23/01/2023 22:11

I bet someone has mistaken her for a neglected cat and taken her in. Has happened to me and several other owners of elderly cats I know, apparently a 16yr old cat looks like a starving kitten 🤦‍♀️ and people self-righteously try to ‘rescue’ it.

Post a photo of her on local Facebook groups, ask at local vets, and leaflet your road.

Good luck xxx

Could she be hiding close by in a neighbours hedge for instance?

This happened to my cat a few years ago. Like yours she's a house cat, but does go into our garden a couple of times a day for a wee, but one hot summer night she jumped out of a window that was wide open. We looked everywhere for her and found her hiding in our neighbours hedge the next morning!

I really hope she turns up soon!

cushioncovers · 23/01/2023 22:21

Ah op I'm so sorry she's not returned it's a horrible feeling isn't it. Fingers crossed she comes home soon.

StarDolphins · 23/01/2023 22:28

This happened to me last year. 11 yo cat that only ever stayed out 5 -10 mins in garden then howled to come back in!

I put it all over FB, emailed vets her pic & posted over 100 slips of paper through doors saying please please check garages, with my number - 3 nights she was missing, she must’ve been locked somewhere.

lots of people have garages sheds open & they wander in.

I hope you find her soon.

Extratoebeans · 23/01/2023 22:30

I have everything crossed that she comes home. Just to give an example that literally happened yesterday. I have 2 house cats (one is a kitten and she was in the kitchen). I came down and she was acting really strange. Kept looking towards the utility room. I went and had a look, couldn't see anything. Hour later, I was sorting some washing out, and a little black face popped out from under the basket. Not our cat.

The previous owners had a cat flap. It will only lock one way, so we have it locked from the inside. Stranger cat came in and couldn't get out. I posted on fb. Owner located, cat had been missing all night, which was unusual for him.

Cats are so curious, and hopefully, she has just gone for a wander and possibly in someone's shed or house. I really hope she comes home soon Flowers

SallyWD · 23/01/2023 22:31

Oh what a worry. I know cats can wander but obviously it's concerning as she's older and likes to stay indoors. I wonder if she's in someone's garage or shed or something. I hope she's back very soon. Let us know if she turns up.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/01/2023 22:31

Go out with a torch abs see if it reflects her eyes

Tunnocks2022 · 23/01/2023 22:32

Come home now, lovely cat 💐

thisusernameisnotavailablepleasetryanother · 23/01/2023 22:32

I hope she turns up soon. My neighbours cat went missing for two weeks, then come home with a new haircut

CrazyBiscuits · 23/01/2023 22:36

Like others have said could be in someone's shed or taken by someone thinking she's a stray. Had various days over the years disappear and reappear but know how you feel. Hooefully will turn up soon.

Whoknowswhatanymore · 23/01/2023 22:36

I had a 20 year old cat who went away and didn’t come back for 3 months!! I was shocked when she turned up! Sadly she went away again and never came back, that’s over a year ago. I hope your cat turns up soon! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Thank you all. I’m so exhausted as barely slept last night so struggling to produce any brain juice to reply individually. Was out with the torch to see glint of her eyes but nothing.
Planning to print off pages with her photo on, can’t afford to go professional. We don’t even have colour ink but luckily she is a grey cat 😂 really don’t feel like laughing right now but did get a laugh with DP earlier about that.

Have you also spread the contents of your hoover outside? They can smell it for miles apparently.

Maybe someone has taken her in as it's been so cold. Post through everyone's door and hopefully they'll realise she's yours.

asblackasyoursoul · 24/01/2023 11:49

Will do the trick of emptying some hoover contents outside.
Slight update today - the food we put out last night has disappeared overnight. DP put out more this morning and it was gone within 2 hours.
Im now heading to Argos to pick up an outdoor camera, I’ve got everything crossed that it’s her.

We also have her litter tray outside and the blanket from the couch. Could it still be another cat coming despite smelling our cats scent from the litter tray?

If you left food out in my area the foxes would get it.

I hope you find her soon OP.

ifonly4 · 24/01/2023 14:49

Fingers crossed it's her coming back. Do you think anything has spooked her in the house or have your changed anything like cleaning chemicals that she doesn't like?

If there's any element of doubt that it's her, I'd knock on neighbours doors, ask them to look under bushes in their gardens - it doesn't sound like she goes too far so might be chilling under one of them.

Is she microchipped? If so and you're not sure her records for your address are up to date worth phoning to check. Either way, you could phone local vets and animal charities to check she hasn't been taken in.

asblackasyoursoul · 24/01/2023 18:32

No update.

No foxes in my area thankfully. I really don’t think it’s anything to do with the house/environment as nothing has changed at all, she was acting perfectly normal that night.

I actually don’t know if she’s microchipped, I need to phone the vets and ask them to check their records of her.

We’ve got the camera all set up with a good view of the bowl of food plus plate of tuna. I also emptied some of the hoover contents out there.

Really praying to god it is her that’s been eating the food. I honestly feel so depressed. Just want her back so badly

Ask neighbours to check sheds/garages as many cats get shut in.

Please update us when you review the footage. Keeping my fingers crossed she returns soon.

My cat went missing for 3 nights years ago. He'd been locked in a builder's cupboard in the underground car park. Came back covered in sawdust and very hungry! It was such a relief and I was so emotional seeing him appear at the patio window asking to come in ❤️

asblackasyoursoul · 24/01/2023 19:00

Thank you. The camera has got the motion detection so it’s alerting us straight to our phones if there’s anything. Praying.

I would put some of your dirty washing on the line & some of her bedding things she used to sit on!

I'm sorry it's sheer hell! My boy went missing over a year ago, I still check the lost & found local pet Facebook group everyday & look for him every time I leave the house!

If your cat is chipped make sure you update the chip website to say she's lost & make sure the telephone number is up to date!

Let the local vets & cat rescues know she is missing! The local cat rescue might be able to lend you a trap to help get her home!

Good luck! 💐

You can create free missing posters on petsreunited.com and they will also email to local members.
After one of mine went missing for a week last year I now have Apple AirTags for my cats and attached to their collars with a silicone case (from Amazon/eBay) so I can see where they are!
I hope she turns up soon xx
