My cat has been shot.

Two weeks ago we lost our beloved pooch at just ten years old.
A week later our one year old cat was quiet and had scabs on her head in front of wither ear. I had some antibiotics left over from the dog so I checked weights etc and started her on these thinking she had been in a cat fight.
She's been eating like a horse (normal) drinking normally and still jumping onto beds, windowsills etc.
I was in work overnight and Dh text me asking if cats can self harm as she had been in all night but her sore looked open and sore again and there was scanned fur on her bed.
When I got in this morning I gave her a really thorough check (I had done a quick one after the 'fight')
I felt a lump which I thought was maybe a scab but on closer inspection it was metal and firmly stuck. At this point she was getting very cross so I let her go. (She's a very independent cat who isn't cuddly at all )
I sent a message to our vet who got her in first thing. I had to sleep to Dh took her and they have agreed it's a pellet and because we couldn't guarantee she hadn't eaten overnight they've booked her in for the morning to be anaesthetised, x-rayed and the pellet removed. She's been given steroids and antibiotics.
She's fine in herself so hopefully it's just this one and there are no others. They also think the head trauma might be stress related and have advised something like rescue remedy so I need to research that too.
I'm so angry that my sweet girl has been hurt like this on purpose.
What is wrong with some people 🤬

your poor cat.
It may or may not have been deliberate, depending on where you live, could he have got caught in shot intended for rabbits/birds?

RoseLemon · 06/12/2022 15:53

That's awful. Hope your cat recovers well.

ShoddyCustomerCare · 06/12/2022 16:06

I know it is completely absurd but I sometimes feel that if I knew about someone intentionally doing harm to any animal, my pet or otherwise, I would batter utter fuck out them.

Absurd I know, but God it makes my blood boil.

Your poor baby, hope she comes through op OK. Hope it was an accident.

DingDangMerrily · 06/12/2022 16:35

We had this except there was no pellet, just a perfectly round pellet sized hole. Vet was certain he had been shot. I had my suspicions who it was which speaking to neighbours confirmed. I posted about it on the local WhatsApp so they would know the vet knew what had happened. Obviously caused lots of local outcry and we haven’t had any further issues.
I just don’t understand how anyone could do that to a poor innocent creature, rabbit or cat.

I’d absolutely join in with this!

Person who shot your cat is scum. I hope it recovers quickly.

I'm the same. I'm mild mannered but I would do some serious damage to them. The vet is going to send us a copy of the x-ray and I'm hoping it is just one.
She's eating normally and I'm dreading having to starve her in the morning. She will not be happy!
I don't think it will be accidental. We live near a large field that's used for rugby training and dog walking but Dh has said he has seen someone with an air rifle sized bag walking past months ago. I'll be reporting it to the police via crime stoppers.

My cat has been shot.

It was such a shock seeing it poking out of her side. 😔

My husbands cat was shot and killed in early 2000s by a pellet gun.

People are sick :(

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 06/12/2022 19:00

I've just adopted a dog from Eastern Europe. After we agreed to have her she was examined by a vet who found a pellet in her forehead. I was heartbroken but she seems to be OK. She hasn't been x-rayed so there could be more. The woman at the shelter has several cats who have been shot but are OK. My vet here said they tend to leave them if they're not moving around and seem to be doing no harm. Actually, someone at DH's work has one embedded in his hand - again, they've left it. So I'm writing this just to set your mind at rest. I hope your baby makes a full recovery. Some people are scum, they really are.

Wibbly1008 · 06/12/2022 19:04

poor little fur baby. People are bloody evil. How can you hurt an animal like that?!

silverclock222 · 06/12/2022 19:05

Bloody humans! My DP has a gun license. He enjoys target practice but would never ever consider hurting an animal. It cost a small fortune for licence, cabinets etc but you can bet the scumbag who did this doesn't have a licence! I hope poor kitty gets well soon.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/12/2022 19:06

How awful! I hope it recovers quickly.

CatChant · 06/12/2022 19:12

Oh your poor, beautiful girl, OP. I really hope she makes a full recovery.

And I hope the wretch who shot her gets the punishment he deserves and more.

DingDangMerrily · 06/12/2022 19:13

You don’t need a licence for the smaller pellet guns, but can still do damage with them.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 06/12/2022 19:14

How could anyone do that to your beautiful girl?

Allergictoironing · 06/12/2022 19:15

Could have been done with a catapult - weapon of choice for many teens in my area. A couple were caught 18 months ago trying to get a moorhen who was nesting out on the boating lake in a park.

Some hunting catapults can be more powerful than air rifles, and can easily take down quite large game e.g. pheasants

PushkaMcgee · 06/12/2022 19:22

Awh she's gorgeous, there are some nasty, vindictive people out there. I'm so pleased she's doing ok.

CharlotteStreet · 06/12/2022 19:34

This makes me so angry!

When I lived in the country, one of the gamekeepers took a little too much pleasure in his job in my opinion. After lamping one night he told me he'd had my ginger cat in his sights. I warned him if the cat ever went missing I would blame him - guilty or not - and would make his life a misery.

PeopleAreTheWorst · 06/12/2022 21:09

thanks all. It's really horrible watching her sore knowing she's got this piece of metal sticking out of her. She's so good.

I dropped her off at 9 for her op. She wasn't at all happy that I had 'forgotten' to feed her and spent the morning before the school run shouting at me.
I'm at my own without any animals for the first time 8 years and I hate it. It's two weeks today since our dog died and now the cat is in the vets. I'm a bit of a mess today Sad

The same thing happened to my friend’s cat, she went missing and was found under a bush, very unwell. She had been shot twice in the head. It was touch and go for a week but thankfully she did recover. A horrible thing to happen OP. I hope your cat is feeling better tomorrow . She is very pretty !

PeopleAreTheWorst · 07/12/2022 11:27

Christ, it's terrifying how many people have told me that similar happened to their pets.
Cass was bright and eating normally and still jumping up onto the top of doors and window ledges.
The only real sign was that when Dh picked her up she went wild but she's been rolling round on her side this morning so we put that down to her being crabby.
I hate waiting. I'm hoping I don't have to wait too long. I think they start ops at 12.30pm so I'm thinking it should be quick unless they have any emergencies
