My cat was killed today

We returned from two weeks in Cornwall about 5.30 pm today. A neighbour always looks after our cats when we go away. We thought it odd that only one cat was there to meet us but thought Poppy must be sunning herself somewhere. The landline rang an hour later and it was a local emergency vets saying that Poppy had been found injured by the road near a local plant nursery and a member of the public had brought her in but that she had sadly passed away. Her injuries were those you would expect from being hit by a car. We are just devastated. I only got through the phone call as I was in shock. Now I can't stop crying. The vets are keeping Poppy until we decide what we want to do. I just can't believe I am typing this.

Aah I’m sorry to hear that OP, so upsetting for you all 💐

Crazycatlady202020 · 21/08/2022 21:07

I am so sorry to hear that. I lost my cat last year in similar circumstances and it was absolutely awful. Try to remember all the good times you had, as it sounds like she was much loved, and there were many of them x

Stripedbag101 · 21/08/2022 22:33

I am so sorry 😢.

tell is about poppy. Do you have a picture?

Cherrysherbet · 21/08/2022 22:36

Oh op. I’m so sorry 😞💐

Spudlover · 21/08/2022 22:39

I’m so sorry OP 😞

TheHorrorOfIt · 21/08/2022 22:40

Oh that is sad Sad It’s good that Poppy was being looked after by the vet, and that the kind person who found her did the right thing. I am very sorry for your loss

Silvercurtains · 21/08/2022 22:41

I’m sorry for your loss. It’s an awful thing to go through.

TheLongRider · 21/08/2022 23:19

I'm so sorry, it's no way to lose a cat. I'm sure she has a very happy life with you.

MayBlossom · 22/08/2022 16:38

Thank you to all who responded following our sad loss of Poppy. Poppy was a rescue cat who we got from the local Cats Protection almost eight years ago to the day. We got Poppy and another cat together as they came from the same previous owner. Our other cat is now like a lost soul and is wandering around looking in odd places, presumably for Poppy. Poppy was a very affectionate, people loving cat who loved being stroked. She would jump up on our knees as soon as one of us sat down and she liked sneaking into beds and, as she was a tiny girl, we sometimes didn't know she was there until we heard a loud purr. I had to go back to work today and broke down on the first person who asked about my holiday but at least I was out of the house rather than having to face her empty basket and sofa blanket. RIP little lady.

What an awful way to end a trip 🌸I'm so sorry for your loss💐 She looks like a lovely little thing, so very pretty. I hope your other cat will settle for you soon, it can take them a few days to understand 💐

Brokenheartedbluebellsmum · 22/08/2022 16:56

I’m so sorry Op for the loss of your beautiful cat … I know exactly how you feel as I recently lost my Bluebell on the road suddenly last month.
It’s absolutely heartbreaking and I really feel for you. I took comfort from the fact that, whilst it was so upsetting to lose our cat this way, we do have her home where she belongs.
We have Bluebell’s ashes in a lovely ‘Bluebell’ pictured tube and we asked for an imprint of her paw, which is lovely to treasure. We also asked the vet to take clippings of her fur, which has also provided some comfort as I can keep some of her fur in a locket.
I’m sure you gave Poppy a very happy life and nothing can take away your memories of her 💐

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/08/2022 17:42

I’m sorry, I lost my boy like this too and it’s just devastating. I sobbed every day for a year. There’s no good way to lose them but this way is particularly shitty.

MayBlossom · 22/08/2022 19:05

So sorry to hear of those who also lost their own cats this way and thank you for your kind words.

What a beautiful cat, so sorry for your loss. RIP Poppy💐

fiorentina · 22/08/2022 20:01

So sorry. We lost a cat during lockdown due to a RTA. So sad, and felt so lost without him. They are such a big part of the family.

Pudmyboy · 22/08/2022 21:49

Heartbreaking news@MayBlossom I am so sorry for your loss, she looks adorable, tiny cats leave huge holes in your heart 💐

MarmiteCoriander · 22/08/2022 21:54

So sorry for your loss. What a shock for you all. I'm sure your neighbour is distraught also. RIP dear Poppy 🌹

Didicat · 23/08/2022 13:37

I am so sorry for your loss and sadly I too have come back from holiday to the loss of my beautiful girl. My boy cat cries when ever we leave the room, and howls if we go in the garden. I am still randomly crying, seeing her in her usual spots. I am dreading going back to work, I wear my emotions on my sleeve normally.

MayBlossom · 23/08/2022 20:23

Oh Didicat I am so sorry for your loss. Our remaining cat is like yours - randomly howling at us if we go outside or when she goes out she comes back more often, as if she is checking we are still here. I am also often in tears, expecting to see Poppy in her usual places. This is just awful isn't it.

Oh, that's so very sad, OP. Deepest sympathies. It's heart-breaking x

lljkk · 23/08/2022 20:28

Flowers Flowers

One of our cats (brothers) died suddenly last year. Remaining cat hated his brother, but then turned very chatty & yowly for months after the death. Even now (we got kittens late last year) old tom cat is much more talkative than he was before.

Didicat · 24/08/2022 07:55

I feel completely traumatised by it, and very few people understand she was my baby, not just a pet. Immediate family discounted, I’d be less upset if any of the other 99.9% of the people I know passed away. The not being there, the lack of a proper goodbye, the guilt for enjoying myself on holiday.

we’ve buried her in the garden so at least she’s home. The kids are doing surprisingly well but keep making thoughtless comments.

not sure how I will get through going back to work to be honest

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/08/2022 09:32

I feel like that too, he was my little boy. I could write you a list of people I couldn’t give a stuff about and I lost him.

MayBlossom · 24/08/2022 19:18

@Didicat I understand completely as I am feeling exactly the same as you and am beating myself up with a host of "if only" scenarios. Poppy was like a baby to me even though I have a DD. A contact at work came to see me today and told me it had been his cousin who had found Poppy and called the emergency vets, staying with her until they came. Whilst I am relieved to find out who it was so I can contact her and thank her properly it also gives me the chance to ask questions, if I am so minded, that I probably don't want to know the answers to.
