My cat was killed today

We returned from two weeks in Cornwall about 5.30 pm today. A neighbour always looks after our cats when we go away. We thought it odd that only one cat was there to meet us but thought Poppy must be sunning herself somewhere. The landline rang an hour later and it was a local emergency vets saying that Poppy had been found injured by the road near a local plant nursery and a member of the public had brought her in but that she had sadly passed away. Her injuries were those you would expect from being hit by a car. We are just devastated. I only got through the phone call as I was in shock. Now I can't stop crying. The vets are keeping Poppy until we decide what we want to do. I just can't believe I am typing this.

I feel for you so much. Sending you so much sympathy. 16 years ago my young cat was killed when I was abroad for a few days attending a really tragic funeral. She was missing when I got back and put flyers out. People got back to me very quickly and told me her body had been taken by a vet. She'd been knocked over half a mile away which was unheard of, she was such a home body. So we got her body back. But I cried enough tears to fill the Nile for weeks. Ever since then I always put my cats in a cattery when I'm away. They hate it, I feel guilty, but at least I know they will be there when I get back.

@RelativePitch Cattery is not really an option for mine as Didi who died refused to eat and stress groomed at Cattery. My boy cat is a stresshead who get the runs super easily- whole litter are digestively challenging poop wise. I had a friends stay the first week and live with them at home. Then a cat sitter for the remaining few days. Twice a day 1.5 hours a day… they are house cats, I’ll never know how my girl cat got injured and ended up the way it did. (Suspect she escaped and I wasn’t told and returned looking ok - but I’ll never know which is in part why I’m grieving so awfully).

I have no idea how I’ll go on holiday again to be honest currently.
