Sol passed away last night :(

My beautiful cat, Sol, was put to sleep last night. 13 years old, he had developed pancreatitus, and after several vet visits, it was clear he wasn't getting better. Not eating at all, not interested in doing anything.

We arranged for a vet to come last night, and with all my children (adult) there, he was laid to rest.

I miss him so much. I have 2 more cats, and they are lovely, but Sol was my companion cat. He'd come running like a little puppy if I called his name. He slept in my room, and was so, so affectionate and sweet.

I feel so guilty that I left it too late for him. I feel so guilty that I let them take his body away to be cremated. I wish so much that I had kept him, even though I know it was no longer him.

Anyway, he was an utter darling, and my heart is broken. And I just wanted some other people to know about him.

Two pictures, one from when he was little, the other was taken yesterday.

I'm sorry, he was beautiful, it does look on the second one that he is tired, you did the right thing for him. It's so very hard.

inmyslippers · 20/08/2022 08:56

So sorry for your loss. He was clearly a loved and cared for companion x

Sorry for your loss, try to remember the blessings you had from the 13 years.

Hillrunning · 20/08/2022 09:21

Oh you poor thing. Looks like a wonderful companion. Try to remember all the loveliness that you have had.

He was so tired, you're right. I feel guilty for not doing it sooner, but my son said if I had, I would have felt guilty for doing it too soon. It's just a thing you feel, I think.

Sorry for your loss, try to remember the blessings you had from the 13 years.

We got him when he was a kitten, along with his brother (Luna), and he was such a little fat ball of fluff - it's testament to how well he was loved that there were six people here last night and everyone was in tears and kissing and hugging him goodbye.

He was amazing, I love him so much. I keep looking back at all the photos and videos I have of him. It hurts too much though. Trying to work today to keep my mind off it, but every half an hour, I just break down and cry. Thank you all for your kind words.

I am so sorry for your loss. You still did the right thing for him no matter how hard it was to make the decision.

I know that is true, and I know that in time I will fully realise that. But waking up today and not having him jump on my bed, and bite my elbow (just to make sure I'm properly awake) - was very sad.

Gorgeous boy, Sol 💙 it sounds like he had a wonderful life with you. He was surrounded by love.

I'm so sorry . It's so hard to make the decision to say goodbye . No doubt you would have felt guilty if you'd done it sooner , the whole guilt thing is part of the grieving process .
Sol evidently had a fabulous life with you .

Thank you - he really was gorgeous, he was a big cat, long as well - but his face was tiny and sweet. And even though he was the biggest of my cats, his meow was the lightest sounding out of all three.

What a beautiful cat; how lucky he was to have found such companionship with you. You gave him the gift of a peaceful end Flowers

What a gorgeous boy. I'm so sorry for your loss OP.

I lost my old girl last year too, I think the feelings of guilt are normal but you absolutely did the right thing for him. Remember cats are very good at hiding any kind of pain or sickness.

He had a great life and had his family with him at the end, that's something to take comfort from. You'll miss him but it will get easier over time. DH and I still talk about our cat as if she's here, well over a year later. After a while it won't feel so raw and the memories will be happy ones x

Thank you - it's so hard, and you're right - guilt is part of the whole process. I'm glad it was done last night though. He was too ill and he absolutely deserved to have the pain taken away.

My other two cats are indeed, lovely, but Sol was something else - so affectionate. My kids used to try and get him to come to them, but it was only me that could get him to come running with his tail straight up.

Thank you, and sorry for your loss as well. They are family - it's not even 'like family' - our pets literally become part of our familes, and our lives, and it's the hardest thing to say goodbye.

I know it will get easier with time, but so hard to remember that right now.

He's beautiful.

Please don't feel guilty. You loved him and cared for him and have him a gentle, loving dignified end. It's the very best care any creature could wish for.

It is such a beautiful thing when a special bond develops like that between a human and an animal - you are both so lucky to have found each other. Sol's life was full of love, right to the very end.

Thank you for your kind words - it's actually really helped making this post, and reading all the comments. I just felt at a loss this morning, and felt the need to share the memory of him.

We were talking yesterday about how lucky we were. Thirteen years ago, we had talked about getting another kitten (we had one at the time), and about a week later I was getting ready to go out, and then my son dropped the mirror in the bathroom, and so I sorted that out, and then went out. I bumped into a lady I didn't see often, and she told me about some kittens her friends cat had had.

And so later we went, and ended up with Sol and Luna, because they were playing together and we felt we had to take them both.

But if my son hadn't dropped that mirror, I would have missed that lady and wouldn't have got Sol.

Sorry for going on, it's just strange how sometimes it really does seem like things happen for a reason

Hello. I feel your pain, here in bed, with my recently lost cat's blanket on my bed.

I'm so sorry to hear your news. He looked so sweet in the first photo. And yes, not happy in the second. The thing to remember is the life he lived, not the end bit where he was in pain.

If you feel like it, can you tell any more stories of him? I too had a loving little boy cat, an old one who loved me best. Then I had a young lithe little boy cat who used to hide by the tree and then run so fast to me when I opened the door. I'd love to hear about your cat's life xxxx
