I've not been feeding my cat enough

I feel so bad. She's 3 and I've always given her1 pouch in the morning and 1 around tea time. I can't believe I've just noticed she should have 3//4 a day. I give her treats / biscuits / chicken but not every day. Sometimes not for days. If she ever cries in the kitchen and I've already fed her twice then the kids will do but I tell them not too usually if I've fed her twice 😢😢

Is she an outside cat? If so she will hunt or get food from neighbours too! Is she a healthy weight etc.?

vroom321 · 16/08/2022 13:52

She's an outdoor cat. Yes she's quiet big rather heavy actually but not fat.

Both my Cats get half pouch morning and half pouch evening. They have biscuits and fresh water available at all times but only 1 pouch of meat a day each.

thecatneuterer · 16/08/2022 13:59

Well if she isn't underweight then she isn't being underfed.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 16/08/2022 14:02

I wouldn't worry. You can't be doing too bad a job if she's an outside cat but always comes home.
Do we get a picture?

MasterOfOne · 16/08/2022 14:04

This.....my girls are fed one pouch in the morning and evening and have free access to dry food all day, and are healthy and active 7yr old!

The box states 3-4 pouches a day, but they absolutely would be overweight with that much food.

FrankGrillosFloof · 16/08/2022 14:05

Why do you suddenly think you’re underfeeding her?

RinklyRomaine · 16/08/2022 14:05

I have 2 girls, one huge and one dainty runt. Both eat the same with dry biscuits when I remember, and meat scraps when I cook. Neither are remotely under weight. If she is a healthy weight, keep doing what you are doing.

heldinadream · 16/08/2022 14:06

I house and cat sit OP and pretty much every cat I've sat for gets maximum 2 pouches a day plus dry, some of them less than that. I've never sat for a cat that gets 3-4. But they do get dry food daily.
Also most of them are both fussy and will turn their noses up at food AND ask for more. Like toddlers really. 😁

SwedishDentist · 16/08/2022 14:07

My cat is a medium sized cat who goes outdoors and she has 2 pouches a day. Won't touch dry food and doesn't drink from her bowl. Vet has always said she's a good healthy weight.

Mariposista · 16/08/2022 14:11

As long as she is a healthy weight and is not too lethargic (beyond normal cat laziness) I wouldn't worry.

hudndkdn · 16/08/2022 14:21

My cat wouldn't eat a full pouch in one go. I give her half and the other half whenever she turns up again and so on. She has no more than 2 pouches a day and access to dry food all day! Shes a really healthy, happy cat

That's what my cat has too. She's an indoor cat but doesn't want any extra and looks a good weight. The vet had the cheek to say she's fat and we must be lying about what she eats 🤨.

DreamingofItaly2023 · 16/08/2022 14:29

I have never fed my cats the amount recommended on the food packets, they have always been healthy weights. For years they were indoor cats too so not supplementing their food elsewhere. It is the in the food companies interests to encourage you to feed more…

Yes cos clearly the vet is trying to personally offend you. Definitely not a professional offering objective advice to try and improve your cat’s health.

I mean they probably don’t even know anything about healthy body condition in cats after 5 years of training!

InTheFridge · 16/08/2022 14:56

My two share a pouch in the morning and a pouch in the evening along with dry food. Neither are fat or thin.

My friends cat eats 4 pouches a day but also normal weight.

vroom321 · 16/08/2022 20:31

To the poster that asked why I only thought about this today. I saw the diagram on the box this morning. Not noticed this before. I don't always get the same food.

Pic of cat taken just now. She's hardly been in these past weeks but it's been thundering here.

She won't drink inside from her bowl. I don't even have a bowl for her indoors now. I leave a couple outside. She likes to drink from the sink or my bedside water though.

Ok read all the replies now thanks.

I thought you would all be having a go that I'm starving her lol.

OP posts:
hudndkdn · 16/08/2022 20:46

Honestly, if she was still hungry you would 100% know! My cat would be in my face meowing and trying to lead me to her bowl if she was hungry!

eurochick · 16/08/2022 21:15

We have two indoor cats. They get 3 pouches or tins between them plus a bowl of biscuits. They are pretty chunky! They would be enormous on 6-8 pouches between them each day and I would be bankrupt!

Hobbesmanc · 16/08/2022 21:22

My three were on three pouches a day plus human nibbles. I know my bad.

Vet said all three were overweight. So they're back on two. They moaned for a few days but seem to have adjusted.

NCHammer2022 · 16/08/2022 21:27

I’ve never had a cat that ate 3-4 pouches a day. All of them have been 2 (more like 1.5 for my little one).

SkankingWombat · 16/08/2022 21:32

Our cat is fairly large at 5kg but not overweight (although not 'fighting weight' either). She's an outdoors cat with an average level of activity. She has 2 wet pouches and a small portion of biscuits each day, plus whatever water she drinks from the pond. She would love to have 4 pouches a day, but would be incredibly chunky on that volume of food! As it is we can't even leave down a big bowl of biscuits to graze on like other cat slaves, as she will gorge until sick.

User478 · 16/08/2022 21:35

Whiskas would like you to give 3-4 pouches a day...

If your cat is a healthy weight then what you're doing works. (They're probably supplementing with local wildlife or next door's cat food)

We have 2 grown up littermates, they get exactly the same every day, one is slinky and one is barrel shaped.

Cats are bastards and just want you to be told off by the vet.
