Why’s he meowing?

WillThisUsernameDo · 28/11/2021 21:34

My cat is 3, had him since his was a kitten. The only times he’s ever meowed before is if he’s been stuck in a room and needed someone to open the door. Then yesterday as I was putting dc to bed he started meowing constantly. I assumed he was shut in a room again and followed the meow to find him sat on my bed washing himself and just meowing between licks.

Since then he’s been meowing constantly. He’s stopped when he’s asleep or eating but other than that he’s just sitting/ wandering around meowing constantly. He doesn’t seem to want anything, is eating normally, going out as usual and doesn’t seem to want anymore attention or strokes. He normally heads next door and chills out with my NDN for a couple of hours each afternoon but she kicked him out today as he was making so much noise she couldn’t hear the radio.

Has anyone else known a cat to do this? He’s driving me insane and it’s only been 24 hours.

Mine is an absolute gobshite, but that’s normal for him. If this is new I’d wonder if he’s hurt or poorly?

purpleme12 · 28/11/2021 21:44

I'm not sure but if it continues I'd take him to the vet as it's a change in behaviour

kittenkipper · 28/11/2021 21:52

I'd worry he was in pain and would take him to the vet.

claymodels · 28/11/2021 21:54

Why have you not taken him to the vet Sad

Taoneusa · 28/11/2021 21:57

When he started meowing, he was doing it between licks. Could it be he was cleaning a wound or a sprain or a bite?

I’d take him to the vet for a check. Good luck!

MellowMelly · 28/11/2021 22:02

The last time one of my cats did this was when it was in pain so you're best off taking it to the vet asap to rule out anything untoward. Good luck!

purpleme12 · 28/11/2021 22:03

@claymodels I think it's fine to not take a cat to the vet straightaway for something like this
This isn't an emergency and it may be that it will stop
On the other hand if it doesn't then yes a vet trip would be best
But I can't see that OP has done anything wrong by not rushing yesterday or today

Theunamedcat · 28/11/2021 22:18

Have you tried meow talk I recorded my cats fighting and vocal cats shouting translated to I just want to be loved!

But more sensibly take your cat to the vet

purpleme12 · 28/11/2021 22:19

Ok well our opinions differ. I wouldn't class this as an emergency which on a Sunday it would be the emergency vets

lljkk · 28/11/2021 22:19

Let us know what vet finds, OP.

Everyone else on the post disagrees.

purpleme12 · 28/11/2021 22:27

@claymodels
I'm not sure what you mean.
I have given pretty much the same advice, if it continues take to the vet (earlier in thread)
I can't see anyone but you who has just posted questioning why OP hasn't already taken to the vet

Anyway I just want her feeling bad for not having taken her before now

purpleme12 · 28/11/2021 22:27

*didn't want her feeling bad, I mean

MrsFin · 28/11/2021 22:28

My cat wanders round meowing when she's brought a mouse in and she can't find it.

Ok

WillThisUsernameDo · 28/11/2021 23:59

@claymodels I hadn’t even thought about taking him to the vets as it’s a Sunday and he seems absolutely fine. I didn’t think that suddenly starting to meow would be a sign of illness as he definitely isn’t trying to get my attention, hes just meowing while acting completely normally otherwise. I’ll give the vet a call tomorrow though.

@lljkk I will do

Vet confirmed that he’s absolutely fine. She thinks there may be a new cat in the area which can make them behave out of sorts sometimes. He’s still doing it and it’s driving me insane. He’s meowing while licking his arse which is quite a feat.

I definitely wouldn't have phoned the vet on a Sunday for something like that! A cat that is eating/drinking/moving perfectly fine, and the only behaviour change is being more vocal surely warrants close observation (at home!) in the first instance. I'd probably go as far as closing the cat flap and keeping them where I could see them, and I'd probably have a good feel/look for obvious injury. But straight to the vet on a Sunday for meowing alone? - no way!

Bettybantz · 29/11/2021 14:26

Actually, I wonder if the weather has got to him? My cat can go a bit loopy in the wind. Glad it’s nothing too serious

That last sentence really made me laugh out loud Grin Glad to hear he's ok!
OldSpeclkledHen · 29/11/2021 16:08

That's good news 👍🏻

Do you have the "meow" translater app? Thanks to MN I downloaded it (just for fun) ... cat shuts up as soon as I point the phone at her 🙄🙄

Oh bless, amazing talent for multitasking😍 Meowing and bum licking, that cat will go far🤣🤣
