BEST Cat Insurance

A friend had to take her cat to an out of hours vet cost over £1,600 her insurance will pay out once and only £1,000.

Is there a pet insurance that covers more than one claim out there can you recommend any?

Mine is insured with Pet Plan. Lifetime cover. I think it's called ultimate. Up to £12,000 per year for vet bills

ItsSnowJokes · 24/11/2021 21:45

Bought by many.

dementedpixie · 24/11/2021 21:49

Bought by Many 15k lifetime cover

Katieweasel · 24/11/2021 21:53

I highly recommend Tesco

SortCode · 24/11/2021 21:57

How much do you pay monthly???

dementedpixie · 24/11/2021 21:59

I have 2 cats and pay a total of £27 per month for both

BBM has cover from 3K to 15K

Toddlerteaplease · 25/11/2021 08:37

Tesco have covered my £22k if claims without fuss!

Vbree · 26/11/2021 22:52

I'm with bought by many for my 10 year old cat. 15k cover. We adopted her last year. Went from £18 per month to £25 per month with no claims. I think that could be due to her age though. We've claimed over 1k in fees this year so I expect renewal may go up but I'm really happy with them. They paid out in less than 24 hours on some claims.

Snog · 28/11/2021 20:24

BBM just quoted £23-£38 per month for my new kitten depending on level of cover. This seems really expensive to me!!!

Is your cat a particular breed? I pay £27 for 2 cats with BBM but mine are moggies

Following with interest, need to switch after having a similar experience as OP's friend.

We are with More Than and it's only £1000 per issue (x rays alone were £1400).

Looking at pet plan.

dementedpixie · 28/11/2021 20:38

Petplan was much more expensive when I looked

Enrosadira · 28/11/2021 20:40

Snog · 28/11/2021 21:22

@dementedpixie mine is a ragdoll, seems like my quote is more than twice as much as your policy is costing!!!

swapcicles · 28/11/2021 21:35

I'm with pet plan, 3 cats, been insured for a while with them although may look around at renewal,
It's 4k covered in vet fees per year (can be numerous) but goes up as they get older and a jump at 10 years as it's excess plus 20% of the total.
Cat 1 male 8yrs £28 pm had surgery and treatment 2 years ago for blocked bladder over £2k in vets bills!
Cat 2 male 9 yrs £25 pm
Cat 3 female £21 pm

TheElvishQueen · 28/11/2021 21:54

I’ve never had pet insurance. I’m not sure what level of cover to choose. Is 15k really necessary? How likely am I to need this? Last cat died at 14 never having needed the vet apart from flea and wormer treatments ,Vaccination and spaying.

indiesearcher · 28/11/2021 22:00

For a ballpark, our cat has this month racked up:

£50 consultant fee
£1400 x ray
£30 medication
£2K (could have been £6k) but we've opted for the next best surgery over the hip replacement

😬

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/11/2021 22:00

Petplan is about £15/month for my 6 year old moggy. They’ve been good for £500 worth of claims - same condition - over 2 claims so far.

indiesearcher · 28/11/2021 22:35

@TheElvishQueen yep, nightmare

Our plan will pay £1000 - so we were spent up by x rays!

Lesson learned the hard way.

Petplan times a million

£17-18 each for my two. Both with Petplan. Ivy insured up to £5k per year although as we exceeded that one year we can't increase it. Betsy insured up to £10k.

I don't trust any other providers (although I spent 5 years working as a veterinary nurse so maybe biased).

SpookyScarySkeletons · 28/11/2021 22:46

Not to be a scare story but Ivy was poisoned 2 years ago.

She was hospitalised for 12 days, constant tests, scans, fluids, bloods. Finally came home for palliative cafe (however then made a crazy recovery and is still with us with normal blood results)

The final bill was close to £6k. We paid £70 excess then anything over the £5k limit.

The main things to look for are:

Not excluding conditions at the start of each policy year
Good level of cover
Will pay direct to vets rather than you having to pay and reclaim
Lifetime cover!!

TheElvishQueen · 28/11/2021 22:58

Bought By Many says after the age of 9 you have to pay 20 percent of the claim and a higher excess. Does Tesco do this?

I got quotes from both and then redid the Tesco quote. It came out as £65 per month when previously it had been about £9!!

Pet plan seems a lot more expensive.
