My darling girl, Demelza, was bitten a few days ago. I didn’t even realise! She has became abit hissy if we stroked too near her but assumed it was just a scratch.

Today my daughter noticed this. I feel like the worst mum ever.
My poor baby.

I’m going to take her to the vets tomorrow. What do you think they will do?

Don't feel bad. Your didn't know and you're taking her to the vet. I hope she's OK

Bluesheep8 · 07/11/2021 17:36

Oh OP, please don't feel bad - cats are experts at hiding it when they're hurt or ill.
How is she in herself? Is she behaving normally and eating and drinking?

Wrinklyeyes · 07/11/2021 17:38

Aw don’t feel bad OP. It’s not as if she could tell you all about it when she got home. You are doing the right thing now taking her to the vets.

dementedpixie · 07/11/2021 17:38

Probably clean it and give antibiotics and pain relief. They are good at hiding pain. It looks open and not infected so that's good I think.

CottonSock · 07/11/2021 17:41

Could be anal gland abcess?

Jinnybean · 07/11/2021 17:48

She was making lots of noise last night on the windowsill but I thought it was the fireworks. She hasn’t left the house. She doesn’t seem to want to sit properly, it’s more slouched forward. She’s eating and drinking, and still snuggling but won’t let us touch anywhere near her back end :(

It's quite a common problem, and cats hide things well, so don't feel bad. She'll be given a painkiller and antibiotic injection. She'll be fine.

Had cats for the past 41 years

Toasty280 · 07/11/2021 18:05

Does it smell?

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 07/11/2021 18:06

It happens especially if they are that coat pattern. You can't always tell. My cat one recently and I only knew because she was licking it constantly.

Jinnybean · 07/11/2021 18:28

How much is it going to cost 😭😭🙈

Toasty280 · 07/11/2021 18:31

My cats was infected (and smelled really bad) they cleaned it, got him an in me of antibiotics and painted and have him tablets and some stuff to clean it with and it was £120 (no pet insurance)

ReviewingTheSituation · 07/11/2021 18:37

Cats are very good at hiding these things.
The vet will check for infection (temp check) and give anti-biotics if needed (or may give them anyway, seeing as it's a few days old), will clean it up and give pain relief (probably metacam). They'll probably want to check it again in a couple of days time.
They'll also have a good look for other wounds as there might well be other smaller ones you can't see.

If they do give you oral antibiotics, many of them are pretty palatable these days - our cat will eat them like a treat if you offer before food. Or at the very least squashed into a bit of cheese or into the centre of a Dreamie.

Keep her inside until it's healed. That's the worst part for our cat as she HATES being kept in. She is begging to be let out within about 5 mins of getting back from the vet. The howling is something else!

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/11/2021 18:40

Poor Demelza, that’s a running away wound too so she was trying to get away. I’d expect to pay £100 or so for that.

Can you do a photo of the front end? We haven’t had a photo of Demelza for a while and she was such a pretty kitten.

Jinnybean · 07/11/2021 18:41

Thank you! It’s not payday until Friday, I have no idea how I’m going to pay for it. I have insurance but not the £99 for access 😂😩

She hasn’t really gone out at all, she has tried to stay in :( x

My boy is a scrapper so he’s had a few of these. They will clean it up and give her a shot of antibiotics and pain relief. Expect her fur to fall out around the wound but it will grow back in a few weeks and she’ll be much more like herself within a day or two.
Cost wise, it’s £48 at our vets.

Jinnybean · 07/11/2021 18:43

She’s such a mummy’s girl 😩🥰

Our cat would get into fights regularly- the vet thinks she was starting them 🙈 she’d often get bitten and then develop an abscess. We’d pay around £80-£100 each time for them to clean it, give her an anti inflammatory injection and a dose of antibiotics.

Jinnybean · 07/11/2021 18:44

She’s never had a fight at all, she’s such a timid girl. :(

OP posts:
Bettybantz · 07/11/2021 18:45

Just seen your update - I’d keep her in till she’s had antibiotics if she’ll stay in.
Don’t feel bad - these type of wounds look worse a few days after they have got them. Poor love 💕

Bettybantz · 07/11/2021 18:46

It may be another cat that has started it. My boy is quite timid but he’s huge, and there’s another big Tom cat who lives in the next street, who likes to try and take him on

Wbeezer · 07/11/2021 18:50

My vets it would be about £50 but it's a rural vets that does a lot of farm stuff and is very reasonable for small animal treatments.

Jinnybean · 07/11/2021 19:24

Thank you all, do you think they will let me pay on Friday? She’s hiding under dds bed atm which is very unlike her :(

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 07/11/2021 19:40

Don't worry. Magic had an abscess on her cheek and a punctured eyeball and I had no idea until 3 days later when I picked her up and she stank. And the access burst.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/11/2021 19:44

That was £800 and a week in the vets as she needed eyedrops four times a day. Which I couldn't do as I work 12 hour shifts.
