DCAT died this afternoon

Our dear little cat died this afternoon in a rather freak accident. She was a bit portly and not very agile and slid off on one of our dining room chairs, she relaxed and flopped and slid off, didn't have time to twist round, landed on her head and broke her neck, one wee scared miaow then she struggled to breathe and was gone. I was with her, she looked scared, it wasn't nice but it didn't last long.
She was 14 but very healthy if a bit fat. My big sons have been sobbing and DS1 has taken to his bed. Jasmine was like a therapy pet for him and really helped him when his mental health had been poor, he's had a tough few years. I'm a bit concerned.
I'm sad too but as a seasoned pet owner im always kind of preparing for their loss, i suppose i dont give 100% of my heart to pets anymore, i keep a little back to protect myself but my children don't.
She really helped my three sons through lockdown and loved having them all home.
What a horrible day.

Sillybillymillyvanilly · 18/10/2021 19:53

That's horrible. It must have been such a shock. Run free little one.

A similar thing happened to ours who was almost 14. Fell off the table where he always hung out when I work from home. Just fell off and passed away just as we made it to the vet. I thought he'd broken his back but he had no skeletal damage so the vet thinks it was a stroke. It was sudden and unexpected.

LadyLindaT · 18/10/2021 19:53

I am so, so sorry for your loss of such a beautiful family cat. x

HazelandChacha · 18/10/2021 19:54

So sorry for your loss. So awful for you to lose her in that way.

There is a memorial thread here if you would like to add more pictures and a little bit about her. So tough for DC Sad

So sad Flowers

Wbeezer · 18/10/2021 19:55

Yes it was rather awful, the horrible realisation that she wasn't just a bit winded. She's fallen off chairs before but normally just gets up looking embarrassed.
I am really very worried about DS1 he doesn't handle strong emotion well and is prone to depression.
She cost £35 pounds from an old gained pretty shop and only ever had to go to the vet to be spayed. She was so tiny people often thought she was a kitten despite her flab. She used to wait at the gate for the boys coming home from primary school.

What a shock for you all. I'm so so sorry. I'm sure she knew just how loved she was Flowers

Flackattack · 18/10/2021 19:58

I’m so sorry - that is so very sad. She wasn’t alone and was very loved - so she was a lucky cat

Wbeezer · 18/10/2021 20:02

@Sillybillymillyvanilly i did wonder about that, i pinched her back paw and there was no movement but i suppose that could happen with a stroke too. She only lasted a minute or two.

TrueRefuge · 18/10/2021 20:38

Oh OP, she was beautiful. What a gorgeous face.

I am so sorry for your loss. It sounds really scary and a sad thing for you to witness. It sounds horrible but like it was quick, it doesn't sound like she suffered too much.

She looks a very happy cat; I bet you gave her a wonderful, wonderful life.

After we had our DCat put to sleep, we left out his photo and favourite spider toy, and lit candles there every evening and would have a little reminisce, a cuddle and a cry. It really helped us grieve for him healthily. It sounds a bit mad, but he had been really unwell and his final days were quite traumatic, and it felt really important to honour his memory in a positive way. Maybe something for your family to do?

Enjoy the dreamies, Jasmine! Flowers

CausingChaos2 · 18/10/2021 20:59

So very sorry - this is heartbreaking. Poor Jasmine, and your family. My family member lost her cat in a similar freak accident, she slipped off a fence and broke her neck. It’s awful that these freak accidents can snatch them away at any time.

TurnUpTurnip · 18/10/2021 21:01

That’s so sad 😞 poor thing she was beautiful

Wbeezer · 18/10/2021 21:08

I'm now wondering if she actually had a heart attack or stroke and that's why she fell off the chair and landed awkwardly. I only saw what happened or of the corner of my eye so can be certain. I'll never know but a heart attack etc. seems less random and avoidable somehow.
