DCAT died this afternoon

Our dear little cat died this afternoon in a rather freak accident. She was a bit portly and not very agile and slid off on one of our dining room chairs, she relaxed and flopped and slid off, didn't have time to twist round, landed on her head and broke her neck, one wee scared miaow then she struggled to breathe and was gone. I was with her, she looked scared, it wasn't nice but it didn't last long.
She was 14 but very healthy if a bit fat. My big sons have been sobbing and DS1 has taken to his bed. Jasmine was like a therapy pet for him and really helped him when his mental health had been poor, he's had a tough few years. I'm a bit concerned.
I'm sad too but as a seasoned pet owner im always kind of preparing for their loss, i suppose i dont give 100% of my heart to pets anymore, i keep a little back to protect myself but my children don't.
She really helped my three sons through lockdown and loved having them all home.
What a horrible day.

Oh how awful. I'm so sorry.

Veterinari · 18/10/2021 21:15

@Wbeezer

I'm now wondering if she actually had a heart attack or stroke and that's why she fell off the chair and landed awkwardly. I only saw what happened or of the corner of my eye so can be certain. I'll never know but a heart attack etc. seems less random and avoidable somehow.
Vet here. It's very unlikely that the trauma of the fall caused her to die. It's much more likely that something happened internally that caused the fall.

In an older cat and with such sudden signs possibly she had a clot (like a DVT) or a sudden bleed.

It will be a terrible shock.

Grief for pets is often overwhelming and can sometimes be a source of embarrassment if people don't feel like they 'should' be so grief stricken. Make sure your DS knows his reaction is common and nothing to be embarrassed about. Powerful grief shows powerful love and that's beautiful.

He might find some of these resources helpful over the coming days

So very sorry for your loss, what a beautiful girl Jasmine was, and a much loved member of your family for 14 years. There is no such thing as ‘just a pet’, they are part of your household and as such a part the fabric of the home and of your heart as well. It’s just such a bloody shock when they go unexpectedly. Very big hugs to you all.

Wishing you happy times over rainbow bridge sweet Jasmine 🌈

Lynne1Cat · 18/10/2021 21:40

Oh, that's truly awful, and I'm so sorry for your loss. I've always had cats, and they've been like furry little people to me.

The only consolation (and it isn't really of any comfort to you at the moment) is that your little Jasmine would've gone straightaway. Sorry xx

Wbeezer · 18/10/2021 21:42

Thanks @Veterinari I think you're right. I hadn't really had time to think it all through when i first posted but that did seem more likely.

So sorry for your loss, OP. What a dear little face. What a happy life she must have had, loved by a whole family. Thinking of your poor son.

TaraR2020 · 18/10/2021 22:07

I’m sending you an un-mumsnetty hug Flowers

Oh I'm so sorry for your loss, they're such a part of the family.

Wbeezer · 18/10/2021 22:57

@Veterinari no raggedy ear, that's just something behind her in the photo. She wasn't a hunter but she would defend the garden from interlopers somehow without ever getting her little white paws dirty, she always kept her fur immaculate and her white bits looked like they'd been washed in Persil.

I’m so sorry OP, what a shock.

I lost a cat quickly to cardiomyopathy, he appeared to have fallen awkwardly from the sofa and died but the post mortem showed it was his heart giving out.

It’s such a shock regardless of the cause, though. Bless her. Hope you’re all okay.

MountainDweller · 18/10/2021 23:02

What a horrible shock. - so sorry for you and your sons Thanks

Oops!
Yes I see it now.

She has a brilliant expression in that photo though - I'm sure she was a great character

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 18/10/2021 23:21

I'm so sorry OP she is so darling. It made me cry because she looks just like mine who died in February. You .must be devastated. Much love xxxx

Wbeezer · 18/10/2021 23:34

I'm sorry @Shehasadiamondinthesky that my post made you cry. It's tough, we still have another cat but she's not such a people cat and doesn't like cuddles.
I really hoped the cats would keep going until all the boys had left home, I'd be guaranteed visits just to see the cats at least. Mind you i was still really upset when my family cats died even though i was long gone.

My little fatso was 20 but still an absolute love, sickest cat I ever had spent thousands on her but still devastated when she went. They touch us in unimaginable ways.
