My lovely 15 year old boy has been ill for some time with kidney troubles, he's gone steadily downhill over the last couple of days but was still eating and drinking and we had made the decision to call the vet after the bank holiday and let him go. Today he has plummeted and about an hour ago he had a fit. He's come out of it now and is very still and quiet. I've called a different vet to ours who is open on a Sunday and they have agreed to see him at 4pm. I know my cat and I know it's time but I feel awful. My four year old saw the fit as well so she's been very upset but thankfully has trotted off happily with Nanny for an afternoon of being spoilt. We lost our oldest cat last November and now we're losing our lovely boy. The dog won't leave his side like she's looking after him.

Oh this is rubbish. Properly, properly rubbish. Sad

I'm so sorry, OP. You are doing the right thing. How lovely of your dog to look after him like that.

TableNiner · 29/08/2021 13:58

Just the worst thing about pet ownership. You’re doing the right thing, it’s the last gift you can give your beloved boy. It will take some time to come to terms with, don’t rush yourself.

So sorry 😢 we lost our lovely old cat late June, the anniversary of my mums death in fact, and I miss him terribly, but it does make me feel better he'd had the best life with us after we rescued him 13.5 years beforehand, and although we knew he would go, we still had about 6 weeks with him before he had to be PTS - big hugs, and at least you're able to say now is the right time and you've had him and he's had you for as long as possible - hugs hugs x

Workinghardeveryday · 29/08/2021 14:09

I am so sorry he isn’t well x.
It is incredibly hard to come to the decision you have, but you are doing the right thing. You don’t want him to suffer and it is an act of kindness to him ultimately.

It will take time to come to terms with it like pp said but you will.
Thinking of you and sending hugs x

Thank you all. We're spending a quiet couple of hours with him before we have to go. This is him, before he got ill, he doesn't look much like this now he's lost so much weight. Our other cat is watching from a distance. I think she knows. Bless her.

So sorry, what a shock for you today - bless your dog . Your dear boy has been resting today with his beloved family with whom he has enjoyed life and you are putting his welfare first as everyone says

It iis absolute agony for you . flowers

Another one thinking of you today .

TheLongRider · 29/08/2021 14:31

Aw, he looks fabulous. I'm sorry you're going through this but you are being a great cat owner. Flowers

My DD was the same age when one of ours died and she was curious but ok about his death. I explained that sometimes I might be a bit sad or upset when I talked about the cat and that was ok because he was part of our family and I missed him.

Dilbertian · 29/08/2021 14:32

What a gorgeous gent. Clearly a loving pet home, when the other animals choose to be with him, too. (((Hugs))) it's never easy to let them go, but you know you're giving him the best thing.

MrGruber · 29/08/2021 14:34

Oh my goodness what a GORGEOUS , wise looking boy

You know how all cats are amazing but once every few years one just wrenches your heart out - you can tell from his expression he is a very special one

best wishes xx

MrGruber · 29/08/2021 14:35

Yes indeed, sounds such a loving pet home

DumbestBlonde · 29/08/2021 14:38

He is so lovely Smile. It is one of the things thatw e know when we take on animals to care for; they will probably go before we do - and many times, it is decision that we, as a last loving duty, must make.

One thng that has helped me is to know that they do not, like us, have asense of the future - but are in the present in a way that we humans could possibly learn from.

They will know pain, and discomfort, and not know that it might, or might not end.... So we have to hold our broken heart together until we can send a piece of it with them on their last journey.

It will be OK - but I hope you don't feel too too sad. He has had a lovely life, and now you will be doing what is best for him.

xx

So sorry OP, he’s a beautiful boy and clearly very well loved & has lived a wonderful life with you.

It’s such a hard decision, we had to make this choice with our old greyhound a while ago and I feel for you, I really do.

But, when you know it’s time it’s the kindest thing to do, sending you lots of love xx

DumbestBlonde · 29/08/2021 14:49

Sorry for any cliches - I did the same a few years ago; and that was on Sunday, which made it easier somehow. No surgery hustle and bustle, and she opened up just fo us.
Brought him home and then to the horses' field. Have a lovely cherry tree there now as well. Bertie's Place xx

Gingerkittykat · 29/08/2021 15:08

Your boy is beautiful and you have given him a great life.

GoodbyeToCare · 29/08/2021 16:32

Oh OP. We lost our girl of the same age to the same thing on Thursday and my heart is broken. You are doing the right thing for your gorgeous cat.

BittaOrange · 29/08/2021 16:37

Is he in the corrrect medication for his kidneys? This can make such a difference. Cats can recover well from seizures. Sending you best wishes.

DeadButDelicious · 29/08/2021 17:44

He's gone. There was nothing more to be done for him, his little body had given up the ghost unfortunately. He went peacefully and will be home soon.

Thank you for all the kind words. Thanks

Am so sorry he has gone, it’s such a hard thing to go through.

He was a very handsome guy - and with a very “knowing” look to his eyes.

Just know that there are plenty on here knowing exactly how you feel and sending you their strength.

I don’t know his name, but RIP Gorgeous - I hope you had some of our departed ones to greet you at the other side of the bridge

Mycatisthebest · 30/08/2021 00:28

Sorry for your loss. He is a beautiful boy and sounds like he came from a loving home. He’ll be having fun at Rainbow Bridge and watching you all. Big hugs ❤️

MrsCatE · 30/08/2021 06:21

You did the best possible thing for you much loved cat @DeadButDelicious Flowers

chatw0o0 · 30/08/2021 06:49

Flowers He looked like a gorgeous and much loved boy - and those 'all seeing eyes' look like a wise man who could cause a lot of trouble - if he so chose of course Smile

Fernticket · 30/08/2021 21:52

So sorry you are going through this OP. You have done the right thing, but it is so very hard. Sending you hugs.
