Remember how the police said it was a fox? Well they've caught & jailed the guy who killed 9 cats & badly injured 7 others.

Even if the victims in this case were human, I would be surprised see such a high proportion of posts on a MN thread yearning for this kind of extra punishment.

If he'd killed that many humans, he'd get a life sentence. He got 5 years and was told he'd serve half of it. That's pathetic in my view. I'm not advocating vigilante action, but I think he should get a life sentence for what he did.

Even if you take the view that cats are 'worth' less than humans, someone who can sadistically kill cats like that is a danger to human society.

The sentence is inadequate whichever way you view it.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 31/07/2021 13:28

I hope he's watched very closely after release; he's clearly a very dangerous man and almost certainly not only to cats.

I don't really have a strong opinion on the sentence; sentencing so often seems kinda fucked up anyway. I posted more because i found the sheer volume of posts hoping he dies painfully, gets attacked and raped in prison, etc. quite chilling.

ShadowInVain · 31/07/2021 13:34

He won't be closely watched afterwards, that's the problem. He'll have to check in with a probation officer from time to time - apart from that, he'll be free to do whatever he wants. Sad

Sure, that's a legitimate worry, and I wouldn't have posted what I did if this thread were just posts from people saying that they think the sentence is too short and the monitoring won't be good enough, that he should've been caught sooner, or similar.

That's a fair observation, but you did include my post about the sentence being too short in your list of quotes you described as gleeful sadism and baying for extrajudicial blood which is why I wanted to explain my point of view.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 31/07/2021 14:00

Fair enough, your post wasn't the worst — in context it kind of added to the barrage, but in and of itself isn't as bad as some (including at least one now-deleted post that I didn't include because they were so bad I suspected they'd go , and I didn't want my post to go the same way even if I could bring myself to repeat them). I think it was your phrasing that made it fit in with the other posts for me, but I can see that you're angry and upset about the case which might have influenced your choice of words.

ShadowInVain · 31/07/2021 14:02

Yes, it's something I feel strongly about, Clumping.

Greenhillfaraway · 31/07/2021 14:06

I am glad he has been caught and prosecuted.

AntiWorkBrigade · 31/07/2021 14:13

Good to see a meaningful sentence handed down. I’ve read too many reports of sentences for serious animal cruelty that are a few months, if that. Some good reporting on how this has impacted owners too. Maybe we’re finally moving beyond ‘just an animal’ or viewing animal cruelty as only important in the context of it being a precursor to harming humans.

Bythemillpond · 31/07/2021 14:13

Cats are akin to children. Defenceless.

Maybe cats were just the beginning.

All I can say is we know what he looks like now.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 31/07/2021 14:25

@ClumpingBambooIsALie

🥱

@GingerAndTheBiscuits really? Even rapists, child abusers? Hmm ok 🙄

Exactly @Bythemillpond

Who knows what or who else he's killed. I'd take a guess that he's not only done this to animals.

Anyone defending him or his
" rights" shame on you.

Beamur · 31/07/2021 14:30

I'm glad he's been caught and jailed.
It is a worry that this is only what they've actually managed to incriminate him for and I hope he will be watched once he's out again. I suspect he's actually quite a dangerous man.

Human rights apply to everyone. Child molesters, Nazis, murderers, cat killers, me and you. Yes I defend his rights and I'm not ashamed of it. I don't want to live in a society where human rights can be forfeited.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 31/07/2021 14:42

@Handsoffstrikesagain

Sadly they are. Some people will defend anyone, see @ClumpingBambooIsALie as and example.

The degenerates you mention @ClumpingBambooIsALie , yes they have rights in law, that's obvious but they don't deserve that protection when they abuse/murder/torture others what about the victims and THEIR rights?!

ClumpingBambooIsALie

But part anyone’s human right is the right to live and not be killed by someone. I don’t believe he has got to the age he has and only murdered a few cats.
Either that is all he has done or he was working his self up to killing children or people. I think this is defending our human rights.

How anyone can defend the human rights of the Nazis. The people who grabbed toddlers and small children and not content with filling the gas chambers with those standing threw the children on top of people to cram as many human lives into these “shower blocks” to kill as many as possible in one go.

Where were these peoples human rights?

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 31/07/2021 14:52

I defend anyone's rights because I want to defend everyone's rights. The point of human rights is that everyone has them by virtue of being human. I think it damages us all on a societal level if we lose sight of that. But this is a diversion really; human rights law is more to do with how you can be treated by the state. So it's not really relevant to how disturbing I find it when people express the hope that other prisoners will attack or rape this person.

AfterSchoolWorry · 31/07/2021 15:00

Horrible, evil waste of oxygen.

AntiWorkBrigade · 31/07/2021 15:30

I agree with clumping - either everyone has human rights or none of us do.

It’s not about siding with, supporting or feeling sorry for murderers and the like either. I wouldn’t feel sorry if some awful event were to befall a sadistic killer or repost. But nor do I actively hope something like this should happen or that the state should make it happen. That is a very dangerous road to go down.
